Over in the "why do you read comics?" thread we've been discussing different attributes of comics such as writers and charachters and what has the bigger impact on you. Expanding a bit on that, what types of comics are you drawn to? Granted I think we're alll willing to try different things. On the same note I think there are certain concepts we are more drawn to than others. Do you prefer superhero or no superhero? Would you rather read dramas, sci-fi, war or crime? If you say you are more drawn to superheroes what kind? Do you like teams or solo charachters? Do you like Superman types? Or do you prefer street level charachters like Daredevil? Most importantly, why?

  • I don't just have one kind of comic that I like. I tried to think of one, but I always thought of the opposite as an exception.

I really love the big crazy concept idea (Jack Kirby/Grant Morrison/Jonathan Hickman/Joe Casey/etc.), but then I also really like my Greg Rucka stuff (Stumptown and Queen & Country), which isn't anything like that. I love Fables and I love Sandman, but I also came into comics on Giffen and DeMatties's Justice League, both America and Europe.

Look at my tastes in Batman: I love The Killing Joke (even though I hate the Joker), Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon, and The Long Halloween equally.

Sometimes I'm drawn to the scientific, sometimes cosmic, and sometimes human. My favorite scene in a comic book ever is a very quiet one that breaks my heart every time I read it*. Whatever is powerful to me at the time.

What can I say? I am large. I contain multitudes. (Sorry, Walt. Had to use it...)

*Sandman: The Kindly Ones. Sandman is talking to Nuala. She asks him for his love. He says he can't give it to her. He can't give her his love, but he can give her a dream of his love. She says, "I already have that."

Don't know why, but doggone it, every time. Tears.

  • When I got back into comics around 2002 I was all about super heroes. I liked the idea do them, like Alexandra said, it's about the odds being against you and how you overcome it.

With superheroes I like to try those concepts that are new to me but I don't always dig them after a few issues. I usually end up preferring such stories with a solo heroe like Spider-man. I try the team books but for some reason they don't work for me. The closest thing to a team book that I follow all the way through is Avengers the Initiative and Wolverine and the X-men which I consider more ensembles than a team. I like the stories with one primary charachter making their way through the world with a strong supporting cast in the background. It doesn't have to be a certain type of character for example of solo characters I'm reading now I've got Batman, Nightwing, Iron Man, Spider-man, Daredevil, Aquaman and Green Lantern so there's a mix of super powered and low or no powers.

I am starting to read more non superhero comics but they have to have a pretty unique concept. However too unique can be a turn off , case in point-Manhattan Projects. Currently I read Sixth Gun and Saga both are pretty different from each other.
  • I would say i am still mostly about superheroes when it comes to comics, but I certainly branch outside of that an always have. More than anything I am drawn to crime comics. In the past few weeks I read Sunset, the new Parker graphic novel, and the new Blacksad book. All of them were great I thought. All of them in the crime genre, and all different from each other.

I am a harder sell on sci-fi and horror, but there always exceptions to those as well. I will at least peruse the Star Wars titles even if I skip most of them. Heck I used to say I don't like horror, yet there always seems to a be a series or three on my pull list.

I also dig war comics, but they are hardly ever produced any more it seems, but I can easily get old ones on the cheap, so that is no worry.

As for superheroes I follow, I generally lean towards the street level type. But heck my all-time favorite is the Legion of Super-heroes, and they are always involved in a sweeping epic. So, I do have my tendencies, but I am also always willing to break them for a good read.
