Warren Ellis to relaunch Dynamite's Superpowers Universe

Dynamite is honored to announce that Warren Ellis, one of the greatest and most respected comic book writers in comics, will be working with Dynamite for the very first time! Warren Ellis plans to take control of the Project Superpowers universe in late 2014, as Dynamite Entertainment continues to celebrate its 10th Anniversary.

"I've long been fascinated by the period in comics that produced these characters, and I'm very much looking forward to working out the strange, atmospheric take on the weird thriller that they inspired. Also, it's going to be a pleasure to finally do a job through the good offices of my old friend Nick Barrucci." -- Warren Ellis

"I've wanted to work with Warren for many years, and have approached him more than a few times," says Dynamite CEO / Publisher Nick Barrucci, "I can honestly say that when his schedule allowed for us to work together, I was speechless. We've been waiting for the right creative vision to bring back Dynamite's Superpowers Universe, and I can't think of anyone better than Warren to do so. I was elated that both came together. He will make this series his own and will bring a larger audience to Dynamite's Super Powers universe. This is truly an honor to be working with him, as Warren elevates Dynamite to a new level."

"Warren is truly a visionary storyteller and he's been given carte blanche to reimagine these characters and this world," adds Dynamite Senior Editor Joe Rybandt. "The results will appeal to his existing fans for sure, but the world he is creating is accessible to all from the start."

Warren Ellis is a graphic novelist, columnist and author of the New York Times best-selling novel Gun Machine, which is currently being developed for television. He has a novella, Normal, and a non-fiction book due from Farrar Straus Giroux in 2014. RED 2, the sequel to the Bruce Willis-Helen Mirren film RED based on his book of the same name, was released in August 2013. He holds the lifetime achievement prize from comics' Eagle Awards and the NUIG President's Medal for services to free speech. He travels a lot and mostly lives in airplanes now.

  • ...So , completely ignoring the earlier , Alex Ross , version ?

Perhaps starting from a newer place , then eventually explaining WHAT ~ if any ~ link there may be to Ross's ?

Maybe a team-up w/the version of the  Golden Age Daredevil and Little Wisxe Guys that THE SAVAGE DRAGON had for a while ? (And I've completely lost touch with TSD since , so .)

  • Given that it's Warren Ellis, I'm guessing he'll give all of them some vile psychological reason for what they do, which may or may not jibe with previous appearances. (Probably not.)

  • Daredevil had the same origin as Batman, except he was originally mute. From what little I've seen of his modern adventures, they're playing him mute again. Reviews of the character always made a big deal about that, but reading his original stories, I see he was actually only mute in his first appearance in Silver Streak#6. In #8 he lectures the president and shouts "are you listening?" to him, so he's definitely not mute. Amazingly when the president tries to arrest him everyone listens to Daredevil instead and tests show the president is being controlled by the Claw. In real life of course he'd be shot full of holes before he could say anything. From the few issues I've read the only thing the current character has in common with Jack Cole's original is they wear the same costume and carry boomerangs. Not too familiar with Warren Ellis, but sounds like he's going to be mute and acting like Batman at his craziest.

  • I enjoyed the previous Project: Superpowers books and would like to see them back. But if Ellis is going to "modernize" them....

But the Golden Age Daredevil is referred to as the Death-Defying 'Devil now!

  • AC Comics called him Reddevil. Is he public domain as long as you make up your own name for him?

  • Roy Thomas renamed him Double-Dare in Alter Ego.

  • I'm looking forward to this. Project: Superpowers did some good work updating and fleshing out these characters, but it didn't do enough to keep me interested. Ellis is certainly capable of filling those holes for me, and I hope he does.
