I was interested in this story when it was being published, and figured -- rightly, as you point out -- that it was supposed to be read in alternating chapters. Which meant buying both series and reading them that way, or if one was delayed, to save and sort later. That sounded like a lot of work, and I would inevitably read something out of order, so ultimately I didn't pull the trigger.
This trade paperback sounds like it solves that problem. With the mechanics sorted, now I have to decide if it's a story I want to read. And this review is very helpful, Mr. Vertigo!
On the one hand, it sure sounds like the writer is channeling several movies, which does not thrill me. I loved Blade Runner and The Matrix, but I don't need a re-hash. Write your own story, bub. And the tunnels bit seems lifted from Radiant City in the Mister X comics from Vortex. Or rather, it's likely lifted from wherever Dean Motter lifted it from.
But the review makes it sound like a fun re-mix of these elements, with a bit of Crime and Punishment cat-and-mouse added. If I see a copy, I'll get it.
Glad I could help, Cap! It's true about the familiar elements (and I had forgotten about the Mister X tunnels), but it makes good use of them.
