  • Just finsihed watching the last episode of the first season. Wow. I daresay this is the best interpretation the Dark Knight has ever seen on the small screen (or the big screen for that matter, or most comics). Excellent.

Batman: Caped Crusader Review: A More Mature Animated Series
Batman: Caped Crusader goes harder into noir territory, while keeping the fluid style of Batman: The Animated Series.
  • Last night I watched episodes 1-8. Will watch the last two today. It's terrific.

    How long until season 2?

  • Two episodes in and rather liking it. I'm not as convinced it's any specific time period, except for noirville. Too many things here don't quite make sense in the late 30s/early 40s, but work fine in a stylized superhero reality based on the era.  Whereas the 90s series felt like it was extending Batman, this feels more like the Batman of Earth-(-x)^2, but that's been DC's way forward in movies/TV recently in any case.

Gotham here plays more as retro-LA, rather than retro-NYC. My wife's joined the party with episode 2 and we're looking forward to seeing what they do with Catwoman.

We'll see how it develops, but has my attention.

Also-- fat Alfred, albeit one with a moustache!

  • We just watched the first 1.5 episodes, and plan to watch the rest as soon as we can. It's Batman set in his original time period, as a film noir, where he works best. Batman: The Animated Series and Tim Burton's Batman (1989) kind fudged the time period, but this is the real deal. Some observations:

    • I loved the criminals discussing whether Batman was real, like in the opening scenes of the '89 Batman movie. Seriously, I could read a LOT of stories set before Batman was confirmed. I think he works best as an urban myth.
    • Penguin as a Margaret Dumont lookalike took me a minute to adjust to. But it really doesn't change anything about the character. And Marx Bros. movies were big then!
    • Penguin having two sons was also a surprise. He's childless as far as I know in the comics. But it makes sense for a woman in the time period, when there was little birth control.
    • The way Penguin is casual about offing her kids, though, makes me wonder how they lived to get as old as they did. Maybe she used to have a lot more.
    • Wow, they aren't subtle with Two-Face, are they?
    • Barbara Gordon is a defense attorney. That's new.
    • The Gordons are Black, which is also new.
    • Flass is dirty, of course. Sad to see Bullock is, too.
    • But they have Montoya to fill his story niche, so OK. But what's with that nose, tho?
    • We have the original fat Alfred instead of the skinny one we've had since 1944.
    • We have the original Clayface, Basil Karlo! The one without the mud! Briefly. (I had to explain to my wife about Lon Chaney Sr. and "The Man of 1,000 Faces" trope that he launched in pop culture for two or three decades, and of which Karlo was a part. I wonder how many people under the age of 60 even remember Lon Chaney Sr. -- who aren't film students, that is. Pop culture marches on.)

That's all that pops into my head tonight.

  • I had it marked on my calendar, but thanks for the reminder anyway! Just watched it. They made some interesting changes. I approve.

  • Today, 8-1-24, all ten episodes of season one dropped on Prime.

  • Wow! This is like Batman: The Animated Series turned all the way up!
