Listing to the previous three months.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, everybody,

I'm back.  I am presenting both August and September 1963 this time...BUT I am taking a change of approach to this.

In the previous threads, I listed all the comics of each month...an arduous task that required LOTS and LOTS of photo gathering , fixing up, and listing -- I mean, days and days of hard work-- and then the thread would vanish so far down the list -- and so quickly --- that I thought it would be better to concentrate on just the high points of each month.

Here is the best of August and Sept 1963...

August 1963

The first teaming of the JLA and the JSA!

The first appearance of Eclipso!

The first appearance of Baron Mordo!

Come on, do I really need a reason to showcase beautiful Infantino/Anderson artwork?

...and the issue contained a letter from...

Batwoman becomes Cat-woman!

Sgt. Rock stars in Showcase!

A wonderful bit of art by Andru & Esposito

...and some August house ads...

September 1963

First appearance of The Avengers!

First appearance of The X-Men!

First appearance of the Sandman!

First appearance of the Reverse-Flash!

First appearance of Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan!

Lightning Lad lives again but it requires the death of _______!

First appearance of Doctor Solar in costume!

The last Strange Sports Stories in The Brave and the Bold!  (How can anyone resist buying this comic with a cover like the below?)

First Super Skrull!

Best Batman Annual ever!

Two movie comics with great art by Russ Manning!

Great fun with Herbie, JFK, and Jackie!

And a house ad with the alternative Strange Tales cover!

  • The first appearance of Eclipso!

And DC has been trying to get most fans to care about him for 50 years.

I like that Marv Wolfman letter. I always find it neat to see those in old comics.

  • I had the Adventure Comics; pretty good Legion story.

I picked up a coverless copy of Captain Sindbad for a buck last weekend at a convention, after recently seeing and enjoying the movie again on cable. Happily and unexpectedly, that art by Russ Manning!

That Strange Tales Annual was my first exposure to Spider-Man, and probably the Torch and Invisible Girl, too.
  • When you say the Strange Tales Annual is an alternative cover, what is different? The one on GCD looks the same to me and I no longer have a copy of the book.

  •

No dialogue on the other version.  Also note the addition of the city.

Now that you point it out it's obvious. Thanks.
