A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Discussion and voting on future monthly themes takes place on the "A Cover A Day: Nominations, Themes and Statistics" thread.  Click here to view the thread, or here to go to its last reply.

    • May 2018 - Superman's 80th anniversary.

  • Yes, - May is dedicated to Supes 80th birthday. "T" will be in June.

  • Superman #273 (Ma'74) was one of my earlier comics from Christmas 1973. For the longest time, I thought this "Wizard with the Golden Eye" was a major Superman foe! Still I vividly recall this story, especially Supes covered in green goop! Plus it wouldn't be the first or last time the crowd would turn on Superman, at least on the cover!

There was a neat "Private Life with Clark Kent" where he goes blind for a really strange reason (and doesn't involve kryptonite or magic). And we learn that Clark has a bust of Mort Weisinger in his apartment which wouldn't be my first choice for decoration!

This was one of the first Superman comics I ever saw. My brother brought home some borrowed comics, because we were both fans of the 60s Batman show, though not yet old enough to realize it was a parody.

I bought a copy of this one a few years back.

  • It's "T" time!

  • Baron - "T" is next month. May is dedicated to Supes!

  • I have to start with this one - where it all began. I know it's a cliche but without this, nothing else would have followed. Imagine picking up a copy of this in May 1938 and avidly reading its contents. I would've been in seventh heaven!  My dad was 3 and a half when this came out. I've often ribbed him about this, saying "If your dad had bought you a copy of this and you'd saved it, you would not be living in this house now!"
