A Flash Question

I am reading a trade called The Essential Showcase 1956-1959. Obviously, it contains the first appearance of the Barry Flash version of the Flash. In the second story of the comic the villain calls him "The Scarlet Speedster", and my question is, was Jay Garrick also called the Scarlet Speedster back in the Golden Age, or was this a Silver Age creation? If it was a Silver Age creation then the villain who gave it to him  in the second story was sent back to jail in his own time, and no one could have heard his thoughts when he came up with it.

So the short of it is: was Jay Garrick called the Scarlet Speedster in the Golden Age?

  • I haven't read enough GA stories to know -- just the first two archives, and the odd reprint here and there -- but my guess would be no, simply because red wasn't such a dominant color in his costume.
  • I looked at my nearest GA book, which was The Greatest Golden Age Stories, and the Flash entry from All-Flash #14 has a caption calling him the Scarlet Speedster. I was pretty sure he was and was happy to see it didn't take long to find out.
  • Groovy, thanks, Philip.
  • Wow, really? Cool!
  • I think he was always either the Scarlet Speedster or the Crimson Comet. Vizier of Velocity was another and, of course, the Fastest Man Alive. I wonder why they never called him the Red Racer or the Red Runner.

I liked Johnny Quick's nickname, the King of Speed, better!
  • I've always dug the Crimson Comet. The Vizier of Velocity, well.. that's reaching. Why was he never the Monarch of Momentum?
  • The Sultan of Celerity?
    The Agamemnon of Acceleration?
    The Pope of Precipitancy?
    The Taoiseach of Tempo?

You definitely tickled my love of alliteration bone.
  • How come Wolverine isn't the Feral Fighter, the Clawed Crusader, the Hirsute Hero, the I'm-Not-Compesating-For-My-Height Avenger or the Crossover King?

Two reasons: First, he doesn't have roots in either the Golden Age or the Silver Age. Second, just being Wolverine is enough. Any bad guy with a lick of sense is going to tremble in fear just at that name. As for his allies, they know that he can't take a joke very well.
