Okay, to be fair to myself, I'm not a COMPLETE spring chicken. I did know about this particular habit of Google's. I just said "interesting" because I didn't realize Will Eisner was someone known by the general populace, as inferred by the Google treatment.

Not necessarily old news. Google always finds something/one to honor and alter their logo appropriately on a regular basis.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Eisner honoured too. How many millions of people saw that yesterday? It was on the google page in Australia.
Us comics fans mightn't be a big number statistically, but we have 'moles' as Scott McCloud called them, in some very influential places.
