I haven't read it, but from what I understand, fans of the pre-New-52 Birds of Prey might want to pick up this week's Batgirl and the next few issues. It looks like Babs is getting a few familiar guest stars...

  • I haven't read BoP at all since New 52, so I don't know the raison d'etre of the team. I'm guessing you mean Huntress (Robin of Earth 2) and Black Canary?

  • Those are the ones, yep -- not whoever is currently in the BOP. They show up at the end of issue 32.

I passed on the issue on Wednesday, but I think I need to pick this story up. Luckily, work will take me to NYC on Monday, and Midtown Comics is just a block or two away.

  • Why do the Birds exist?

  • Honestly, I read the book for probably 10 issues and couldn't tell you. It seemed like they were born out of Canary & Starling's friendship, but then Starling apparently betrayed them (I never got that far in it, but the development really disappointed me since Starling was a real standout new character), and they changed members quite a bit. Ultimately, I wasn't satisfied with Stryziewsky's elliptical storytelling and I bailed before I ever found out.

But these characters aren't the birds, as far as I know, though Canary (and to a lesser extent, Batgirl) have been (are?) associated with the team.

  • Thanks for the heads-up, Rob. I'll pick that one up next time it's handy. (And the slippery DC slope grows steeper...)

  • ..." Slippery " ?

But , if you buy it , you're buying MORE DC...

  • That's exactly what I mean. I'm inadvertently getting back into a few DC titles.

  • ...OK , thank you , given the general tendency of many here to say " I NEVER buy the Big Two anymore !!! " ` and these days , after the New 52 , saying that about DC ~ Somehow it came of as " I'm slipping away from DC " , although saying that you would get a BOP when possible pointed to the opposite...

  • The second issue of the New-52 sort-of-original Birds of Prey team-up in Batgirl went on sale this week (#33), and it's a corker. And Fernando Passarin's art is just stunning!

Also, there's a cameo from a lookalike of another former Bird in one scene... a nice wink to a favorite of mine.

Seriously, if you miss the old Birds of Prey, you don't want to miss this book. It's a TON of fun.

  • I get Batgirl via trade ... hoping to get the full story there.
