  • Mee, too. And I read 'em every weekend.

  • I've read that Brenda Starr is in only 35 newspapers, which is why I suppose Tribune Media Services didn't bother to seek a replacement artist and writer once Mary Schmich chose to hang it up. It's too bad.

I suppose Brenda Starr has had her day, but I appreciate how Schmich would, in a sly way, comment on this business we call news. Just creating characters named "Rat Sludge" and "Al Noheart" puts me firmly in her corner.

Plus, Brenda Starr has the distinction of having had only women creators during its entire run, from originator Dale Messick, followed by longtime DC Comics artist Ramona Fradon and June Bridman (Marvel's Power Pack) for the past 15 years.
