  • Sad, but, at 93 you can say he led a good, long life. Karloff is the only other actor that I can think of who comes close to embodying the monster/horror genre. When I have a little more time I will post an all time Lee favorites list, perhaps others can do the same.

  • From Hammer to The Hobbit, what an amazing career! And he never retired!

  • The last of the true masters of movie horror. An era has passed.

  • Definitely the last. I've been following his career since that first Dracula, long ago. A memorable actor, an amazing record.

The measure of a great man is that he lived that long, and one still feels that he died too soon.

  • Well said, Baron.

  • I saw him last in one or another of the Hobbit movies.  Even though he was clearly getting frail at that point, he still had that voice.  Just great.

Also ... and I'm really, really sorry for this ... but if he rises from the grave, we can't say we didn't have fair warning.

  • Some people argue there are still masters. Not really. Robert Englund would probably be the closest, and he's not really the same thing.

When Scream and Scream Again was posted on youtube one of the comments said: "Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and Vincent Price? Sold! Sadly, the movie stunk. And with a cast like that there was no excuse for them not making a good movie.

I think Christopher Lee would enjoy that statement.

  • A great anecdote about Lee not wanting to continue with the Dracula movies - the Hammer execs would guilt him into coming back by telling him of all the techs and support people that would be unemployed if he failed to return. Not wanting to put someone out of work, Lee gamely donned the cape again (and again and again) ostensibly to keep the production people off the dole.
