JSA #18

(W) Jeff Lemire (A) Gavin Guidry (CA) Dave Johnson

YEAR ONE CONCLUDES! Year One comes to an end as the greatest heroes of the Golden Age assemble to face down this devious threat plaguing Gotham City and all of America!

if you've been following my JSA re-read, you know where this story stands — and my predictions for how it will end. I hope for a few twists that I don't expect, but there won't be a lot of room left over after all the story I do expect.

MAD ABOUT DC #1 (ONE SHOT)

(W) The Usual Gang Of Comic Book Creators Who Needed The Extra Money (A) The Usual Gang Of Comic Book Creators Who Needed The Extra Money (CA) Dan Panosian

LOOK, IT'S NOT FARTACULAR BUT THEN AGAIN WHAT IS? Chip Zdarsky is a funny guy. Remember when he made that whole April Fools' gag comic with rub 'n' smell farts? Oh, wait, that was me, DC Comics E-I-C Marie Javins. Chip was the one saying, I'd turn back if I were you, but he couldn't stop me. Editors are a self-destructive lot. Which is why this year, I said, I give up, you do it, Chip, you are so much funnier and prettier and also better with cats than I am. And look, he went and did it. Chip demoted himself to editor. Chip is turning the DC universe on its ear and bringing you savage mockery of all we hold dear, and he is assisted in this brutal task by Matt Fraction, Gail Simone, Skottie Young, and many, many more. Next year? Back to farts. Includes MAD favorite Sergio Aragones with A MAD Look at Comic Book Stores, Guy vs. Spy by Jim Zub and Ramon Perez, and a DC Fold-In by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. Plus a slew of MAD-style parodies of all DC Comics you hold dear, and some you've always hated anyway. MAD About DC #1 will fulfill your every comic book dream, or at least three or four of them.

I outgrew MAD in the '70s, and remember how crestfallen I was when I realized it. I still say MAD should be required reading in middle school civics classes. If there are middle school civics classes. Because all Americans should learn to question authority, which has a tendency to metastasize when it's not challenged.

Where was I? Oh yeah,MAD ABOUT DC #1. Grown-up or not, I admit I'm tempted by this one.

GHOST MACHINE THE OFFICIAL GUIDEBOOK #1 (OF 5) CVR A GARY FRANK & BRAD ANDERSON WRAPAROUND

(W) Geoff Johns, Brad Meltzer, Peter J. Tomasi, Francis Manapul (A) Gary Frank, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Brad Anderson (CA) Gary Frank, Brad Anderson

How hot does Geiger burn? What is the Committee on Spectral Affairs? Did George Washington really die? This new limited series collects all-new entries teasing tantalizing stories to come, as well as updated goods on Ghost Machine’s characters from across its hit titles beginning with The Unnamed Universe from GEIGER, JUNKYARD JOE, and REDCOAT! With interior character art from Ghost Machine’s all-star artists, don’t miss the outstanding classic homage covers that let you decide what ’80s inspired guidebook look you want to collect! This initial volume covers the first half of the world of The Unnamed from Albert Einstein to the High Plains Zoo!

The Ghost Machine books are very professionally crafted, with terrific art across the board. And I enjoyed the first Geiger, Redcoat and Hyde Street storylines. I haven't read Junkyard Joe yet, but it's in the Wall of Shame, so I'll get there. The only hitch in the giddy-up is the line doesn't seem to have a central, breakout book yet. They're all very good, but none are great. Maybe that's enough.

As you can see below, two variant covers mimic the trade dress for Marvel's Official Guidebook and DC's Who's Who.

The face of comic books changed forever when G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #21 introduced fans to the “Silent Interlude,” an action-packed story with no dialogue. In this standalone thriller, the BARONESS must prevent Cobra intelligence from falling into the hands of G.I. Joe... and Destro?

In addition to the main cover by Joëlle Jones, the lineup of variant covers includes an open to order cover by Jorge Fornés (Rorschach), a 1:10 incentive black and white version of Jones’ cover, and the beginning of the 1:25 incentive foil letter cover series by Fornés, ultimately spelling COBRA.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero Sssilent Missions - Baroness #1 is the first of five all-new Silent Missions one-shots, each releasing on a Wednesday this April, from an elite assembly of talent including Gabriel Hardman, Jöelle Jones & Declan Shalvey, Pat Olliffe & Tom DeFalco, Howard Porter, and Jorge Fornés.

GROO: THE PROPHECY #1

Groo and Rufferto travel far over the land and across an ocean to get away from those who fear Groo and his infamous bad luck. Our hungry pair of adventurers seems to be running toward catastrophe, though! The priestess Sybilia has visions of terror after terror arriving to her village—with only Groo also arriving to seemingly save her townspeople! Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier deliver another wild Groo ride, with Eisner Award-winning lettering by Stan Sakai and exquisite colors by Carrie Strachan!

A new Groo tale of prophecy and catastrophe—as only Groo brings!

By hilarious comics maestro Sergio Aragonés with longtime collaborator Mark Evanier!

New Groo is always welcome. I have all the Groo miniseries complete through, I dunno, mid-2010s? And I have a few stray TPBs. I think, though, I'd rather have compendia, if any exist.

BLOOD TYPE TP: I read this in five-dollar-unit form. It's a spin-off from Epitaphs from the Abyss, which featured a vampire named Ada, whose distinguishing trait is her black humor. In this story she finds herself in a Caribbean tourist trap, where there's a meaner, older predator hiding. It was OK, but I wouldn't recommend it to the casual reader.

LIGHTS OF NITEROI TP

31123079894?profile=RESIZE_192X(W/A/CA) Marcello Quintanilha

In 1950s Brazil, somewhere by the beach, not far from Rio, Hélcio, a young and promising soccer player, and his friend Noël, spot someone fishing with dynamite. They decide to take a boat and steal some of the dead fish to make some money. The boat trip turns into a perilous journey as the two thieves embark on an adventure that will challenge their friendship. Inspired by the life of Marcello Quintanilha’s father, Hélcio Quintanilha, this graphic novel is both a suspenseful thriller and a breathtaking story about friendship. In The Lights of Niteroi, internationally acclaimed graphic novelist Marcello Quintanilha returns to the city where he was born and raised. He dives into the waters of Guanabara Bay and crafts a plot based on real events that took place in the 1950s. It’s an adventure full of suspense, involving fishermen, soccer, the Brazilian feminist and striptease artist Luz del Fuego, and the first naturist camp in Brazil. Translated by the author with Bruna Dantas Lobato.

UNDERCITY HC

31123075486?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Monte Schulz (A) Monte Schulz (CA) Hieronymus Bosch

Once there was a republic of boundless wonder and achievement whose bright horizon had gone dark, soiled by a populace it imagined as undisciplined, unhealthy, feebleminded, and whose very existence stained and subverted a great society. A solution appeared in the furious logic of Biological Dominion that named the ineffectual and weak, the criminally deformed and unwell, as the root cause of this decline. Now, imagine laws conceived in the high halls of government to rid this society of millions deemed infected by a curious disease supposedly responsible for that poverty of health and morality. Next, imagine those millions considered to be unfit and unworthy for daily life loaded onto freight trains and ushered away to perish in distant woods and fields. Imagine more thousands chased into the vast underground of labyrinthine caves and dark catacombs beneath vibrant city streets and lovely city parks to wither away and die. Undercity collects the voices of brave survivors, of those who’ve refused to submit to the indignities of eugenical persecution, the horror of gas chambers, and relentless warfare in rural provinces. Some of these stories demonstrate the moral disaster of eugenics, while others tell of courage and love and that indomitable magic of the human spirit that refuses to be silenced in the face of unspeakable crimes. Perhaps Undercity is a warning to us, as well, that what we might think is unimaginable needs only apathy and inattention to arise.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD A GRAPHIC NOVEL HC

31123080286?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Harper Lee (A/CA) Fred Fordham

“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”A haunting portrait of race and class, innocence and injustice, hypocrisy and heroism, tradition and transformation in the Deep South of the 1930s, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird remains as important today as it was upon its initial publication in 1960, during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights movement. Now, this most beloved and acclaimed novel is reborn for a new age as a gorgeous graphic novel. Scout, Jem, Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, are all captured in vivid and moving illustrations by artist Fred Fordham. Enduring in vision, Harper Lee’s timeless novel illuminates the complexities of human nature and the depths of the human heart with humor, unwavering honesty, and a tender, nostalgic beauty. Lifetime admirers and new readers alike will be touched by this special visual edition that joins the ranks of the graphic novel adaptations of A Wrinkle in Time and The Alchemist.

  • This looks like fun.

    Are you speaking "Bizarro"?

I outgrew MAD in the '70s, and remember how crestfallen I was when I realized it.

I don't remember who said it first, but MAD is something you used to grow into, not out of. It's not what it used to be. These days, it's very juvenile, but I still enjoy reading '60s issues, and I'm usually impressed by how "adult" (in a non-salacious way) the humor is slanted.

Grown-up or not, I admit I'm tempted by this one.

I wouldn't be. Take a look at those covers. This is all new stuff. If you're feeling nostagic for MAD's treatment of super-hero fare, I'd recommend Mad About Super-Heroes (2002), which goes back as far as the 1950s. This is what you want. Trust me.

(Yes, that's an Alex Ross cover.)

This book collects the first JLA adventures, which I already have in several formats already. Still tempted to re-visit these old favorites, though!

Ask yourself this question: "Next time I read it, whihc format am I going to read?'

I bought all these Paul Dini/Alex Ross JLA books when they first came out in softcover, and I've always been reluctant to embark on a re-purchase of all of them in hardback.

If they ever released a collection of them all in a single hardcover, I think I'd buy that.

I doubt anyone on this board will read this magazine, including me.

My shop doesn't carry it (at least I didn't see the first issue).

    • I have MAD About Super-Heroes, MAD About Comic Strips, MAD About the Mob and other compilations!
