FURY OF FIRESTORM #1 (OF 6)

31127314064?profile=RESIZE_192X31127314289?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Rafael De Latorre

THE NUCLEAR MAN GOES NEXT LEVEL WITH JEFF LEMIRE AND RAFAEL DE LATORRE! The community of Bedford, Colorado, is a sleepy small town. The people say hello to their neighbors, attend town hall meetings, and root for the local high school football team on Friday nights. But this idyllic small town is thrown upside down when the Nuclear Man arrives and starts...experimenting. Firestorm has turned buildings to sand and people to glass with no remorse and no warning. But what exactly provoked Ronnie Raymond to commit this heinous act, and can anyone contain the fury that is Firestorm? Brought to you by the incredible team of Jeff Lemire (Absolute Flash, JSA) and Rafael De Latorre (The Penguin) comes the next epic in the Next Level line.

DC is re-launching some of its second-tier characters in an initiative called "Next Level," and Firestorm is one of the first beneficiaries. Zatanna and Lobo are also in the first wave.

I've never really cared for this character. I was put off at the get-go, as I felt they were trying too hard to re-create Peter Parker with Ronnie Raymond (I felt the same way about Christopher Powell, Danny Ketch, and especially Richard Rider). The costume was overly complicated and, I thought, hideous. The on-fire head is laughably impractical (especially indoors) and felt like a Ghost Rider swipe. Plus, his matter-transmuting powers made him waaay too powerful -- so powerful none of his early villains should have had a chance. (I felt that way about Barry Allen and his rogues, too, but at least that was charming.) He joined the Justice League quickly to increase his exposure, when the policy before that had been more or less the reverse -- the hero had to get popular first. It felt forced.

And now it's been "revealed" that Prof. Stein is a scheming so-and-so who planned the "accident" that created Firestorm. I'm not sure why Raymond would ever allow himself to join the matrix again, now that he knows that. I guess it will be addressed in this series.

But I don't fault DC for giving this character another chance. They need to sell something besides Batman!

From the pages of THE DARK ARTERY in UNCANNY X-MEN: Who are the Regulators, the turn-of-the-century mutants who once called Haven House their home? And what secret connection do they have to Wolverine's past?

I just binged Deadwood, so I'm kind of in a Western mood. If this is a Western. I'm guessing the turn of the century they refer to is 19th century to 20th. So it would be in the neighborhood. But with the super-powers evident on the cover,  it's probably more of a superhero team-up against bad cowboys. But it looks to be standalone, which is a plus.

PUNK'N HEADS

Dave Baker, Nicole Goux

This band plays together, lives together…and unfortunately two of them are sleeping together. Whatever, I’m sure it’s fine. Now put on your punk’n mask and let’s rock!

Hannah Lipsky isn’t sure what’s happening. She dreamed of becoming a fine art painter, but after breaking up with her girlfriend, she’s suddenly dropped out of art school, moved into a flophouse, and gotten roped into singing in a campy horror-punk band. With costumes. To make things even more complicated, she might be hooking up with her housemate/bandmate/high school crush, Jerry. Wherever this is leading, it’s going to be messy.

I can't resist a trailer.

31127225486?profile=RESIZE_192XFrom award-winning, lauded author Sarah Gailey (Know Your Station, Eat the Rich) and fan favorite artist Haining (Absolute Flash) comes an all-new, mind-bending thriller about community in NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH.

Jill Hewett, community leader and wife of a respected police officer, has turned up with a grievous gunshot wound in a tunnel connecting the Will Harbor Gated Community with the neighboring Open Arms Collective.

And now, the VP of the HOA and the Kitchen Steward of the Collective have stumbled upon her body at the exact same time—instantly casting blame across the already fragile divide.

Forced into an uneasy alliance to uncover the truth, they’ll need to work together to unearth the secrets both communities hold to figure out who’s responsible for the crime—and what they could possibly gain from it.

And just what was Jill doing in the tunnel in the first place?

Andry (Crush Depth, Morning Star) and modern horror virtuoso Maan House (Mine is a Long Lonesome Grave) comes a chilling tale of secrets buried deep beneath the surf of the idyllic California coast ... Atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean sits the Mission at Arbues Point, a 400-year-old Spanish mission made infamous as one of California’s oldest and most haunted historical sites. But beneath its crumbling, tourist-trap facade, a reclusive nun has spent decades within the Mission’s walls, honing her prayers and practice in pursuit of a secret long-buried beneath the majesty of the chapel, and under the dark waves of the tidal estuary below. When marine archaeologist Maris Cristobal accepts the nun’s offer to begun excavating a fabled shipwreck lying in wait beneath the Mission’s turbulent waters, she’ll soon discover that the sins of past and present are about to wash together into a harrowing surge of a vengeance that can no longer be contained ...

ATLAS CREATOR COLLECTION NO. 3: BILL EVERETT VOL 1 -- ONE HEAD TOO MANY AND OTHER WEIRD HORROR STORIES HC

31127308285?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Bill Everett, Dr. Michael J. Vassallo (A/CA) Bill Everett

Already a Marvel/Timely legend for his creation of the Sub-Mariner in 1939, Bill Everett returned to Marvel during the 1950s to become Atlas’ most versatile and effective practitioner of horror-fantasy. Everett’s art was a combination of Graham Ingels, Harry Anderson and Bernie Wrightson, with the slick ink line of Jack Davis, all melded within his own uniquely captivating imagery and in-your-face ghastliness. This mammoth Fantagraphics/Marvel volume is packed with Atlas pre-Code horror stories — the first volume of a series collecting the Atlas works of Sub-Mariner-creator Bill Everett. Including: “Spectacles of Doom,” “The Evil Eye,” “The Pit of Horror!” “Horror in the Moonlight!” “Don’t Bury Me Deep,” “One Head Too Many!” “Burton’s Blood!” Werewolf!” “The Madman” and “The Graymoor Ghost,” from titles like Menace, Journey into Unknown Worlds, Strange Tales, Uncanny Tales, Spellbound, Mystic and Suspense, as well as “Zombie!” from Menace #5, featuring a character rebooted as Simon Garth in the black-and-white Marvel Magazine explosion of the 1970s. An introduction by Atlas expert Dr. Michael J. Vassallo puts it all in context.

CORTO MALTESE FABLE OF VENICE AND OTHER ADVENTURES TP

31127308871?profile=RESIZE_192X(W/A/CA) Hugo Pratt

Artist Hugo Pratt’s most famous creation, the indefatigable sailor Corto Maltese, sails back to American readers after a far too-long absence in Corto Maltese: Fable of Venice and Other Adventures. Corto, a modern Ulysses whose wanderings in the early decades of the 20th century take him to the most fascinating places on Earth, is a hard-luck, hard-driving iconoclastic anti-hero who values freedom and independence more than wealth and status. In “Fable of Venice,” a riddle from a deceased friend plunges Corto into a phantasmagorical mystery thriller that zigzags between the solidity of dreams and the fluidity of reality. A frantic chase in 1921 Venice ensues, up twisting stairs and down tangled alleys, as Corto vies against Freemasons, occultists, budding fascists, and his friend (suddenly back from the dead) in a mad scramble to secure a mystical emerald that will open the doors of forbidden magic and unravel time and space itself! In addition, this collection of quintessential seafaring adventures also presents the Corto Maltese classics “The Secret of Tristan Bantam,” “So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune,” and “The Seagull's Fault,” making this book an exciting introduction to Pratt’s work.

I have a lot of Corto Maltese from when IDW collected the series, most of which I have not read. I think I'll be content with what I've got.

Flintheart Glomgold, “The Second-Richest Duck,” is here in Carl Barks’ 1956 classic! Sorceress Magica De Spell is out to get “The Midas Touch,” then turns Duckburg sideways in Don Rosa’s “A Matter of Some Gravity!” The Beagle Boys pull Scrooge’s simoleons skyward in Barks’ “The Money Well,” then turn his assets liquid in Rosa’s “Cash Flow!” Playboy billionaire John D. Rockerduck debuts in Barks’ “Boat Buster,” then outspends Scrooge again in Flemming Andersen’s “Crash Course”! Plus never-before-collected tales starring Dutch tycoon Velma Vanderduck, space-monkey Tachyon Farflung... and more! See these classic adventures outfitted with new commentary by Disney historians Jim Fanning and David Gerstein, plenty of extras... and more surprises than Scrooge’s Money Bin has booby-traps. I wonder how much Barks there actually is.

TIODORA'S LETTERS: AN ENSLAVED WOMAN'S FIGHT FOR FAMILY AND FREEDOM HC

31127313656?profile=RESIZE_192X(W/A/CA) Marcelo D Salete

In the mid-19th century, millions of Africans were enslaved and brought to Brazil. Among them was the real-life Teodora who, separated from her husband and her son, worked in the home of a priest in São Paulo. Wishing to reconstruct the family ties lost during the journey from Africa to Brazil and to achieve emancipation for herself and her family, she gave Claro, a Black man who could read and write, money to help her write letters: some addressed to her husband and her son, whereabouts unknown, in the hopes that the letters would find them and that they could achieve this quest together; and some addressed to enslavers, intended to either help locate her family or to persuade them to let her buy her freedom. Inspired by this correspondence, Tiodora’s Letters is a rigorously researched historical work, a compelling narrative based on her letters, and masterfully drawn by D’Salete, who graphically recreates her struggle. In the 1860s, Benê, a fictional Black young man who likes Tiodora because she was kind to him, takes it upon himself to seek Tiô’s family and deliver the letters. He embarks on a dangerous and world-building journey into the interior of Brazil and to the coffee plantations where they might be. There are many wordless passages of heartbreaking horror, character beats, breathtaking drawings of nature, and much more. In Tiodora’s Letters, D’Salete reconstructs a forgotten part of Brazil's dark history of slavery and pays tribute to the strength of a woman who fought for her rights single-handedly. Includes educational and contextual material.

Here's some history I'm not very familiar with.

Thomas is in so much pain. As if high school wasn’t hard enough, when his father is killed in a freak accident, and his mother begins to take refuge in the company of his uncle, Thomas is visited by a ghoulish kid named Luther with knives for hands and rows of teeth like an ancient shark who tells Thomas his father was murdered and that anything his mother and uncle tell him is a lie. Thomas doesn’t know who or what to believe. Does he believe his friends, teachers, and mother, who tell him grief isn’t for the faint of heart, but it will pass? Or does he believe the demented Luther who pulls Thomas through a bloody whirlwind of conspiracies, vengeance, and slaughter, showing him the lies and corruption that surround him? Thomas must fight to discover the truth behind his father’s death, while struggling to keep his new friend from leaving a massacre in his wake. But that “truth” might be far more sinister than Thomas is prepared for…

"When his father is killed in a freak accident ... his mother begins to take refuge in the company of his uncle." Wait, I've heard this plot before. Is this ... Hamlet

  • SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #115 FACSIMILE EDITION: It's definitely the cover on this one! IIRC the story isn't great shakes, but man, Neal Adams knocked it out of the park with the cover.

This is neither here nor there, but I like to pair the Jimmy Olsen #115 cover with this one by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson...

It's just all symbiotes all the time now, isn't it?

It's symbiotes all the way down...

  • I'm hoping Firestorm succeeds too, as I've always liked the character. My reaction and Cap's is probably a result of our difference in ages -- he saw Firestorm as a collection of tropes he's seen done better elsewhere, but I just saw him as a fresh new DC hero I could root for. (And the turnaround from cancellation to JLA membership and getting a back-up series in Flash to regaining his own title was a journey I really enjoyed.) The handful of preview pages I've seen look intriguing -- but Firestorm is acting wildly out of character for pretty much any version of him we've seen before (aside from maybe when he was struggling with being a fire elemental in the early 90s). It'll be a few weeks before I can set foot in my comic shop again, so by then I'll know how this was received and can make my buying decision then. I'm leaning toward waiting to read it on DCUI, as I'm not a giant Jeff Lemire fan .... and I'm not such a fan of Firestorm that he overcomes my mixed feelings, the way I am with JSA.

That said, Firestorm looks mood- and mystery-forward, which I think is a tack that plays to Lemire's strengths. Hopefully it's a success!

I don't think we ever saw Aquaboy again. Maybe that issue didn't sell well.

I'm hoping Firestorm succeeds too, as I've always liked the character.

I'm not terribly interested in most of DC's "Next Level" plans, from Lobo to Deathstroke. But as you explained so well, Rob, fans of different ages and tastes have different feelings for different characters. These books might hit some fans right where they live.

And I hope they do! DC is doing what we always say the Big Two ought to do, which is expand into different genres, tell some different kinds of stories and publish the less-traveled characters. So I'm supportive intellectually, if not financially. As I've always said, I want to see a lot of books on the shelf that I don't want to buy. There are audiences out there besides me, and serving them expands the whole industry.
