Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Jed Mackay
Penciller: Mark Bagley, Farid Karami
Cover Artist: Russell Dauterman

AVENGERS LEGACY ISSUE #800! EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES mark a critical MILESTONE with eight hundred issues! Everything has been building toward this: MYRDDIN's ENDGAME! KANG stands revealed at the precipice of a NEW UNIVERSE! PLUS: This issue will feature a special 14-page backup story written by Bendis and drawn by superstar artist Mark Bagley, reuniting the powerhouse pair known for their work together on Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble.

Marvel Math says this is Legacy Issue #800, and no, I'm not going to check. The real story here is the return of Brian Michael Bendis to Marvel. He's writing a 14-page backup story with frequent collaborator Mark Bagley. I don't know what this will lead to, but I sure doubt it's a one-off.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN TORN #4 (OF 5), $3.99: Jeff of Earth-J writes about this series HERE.

BATTLEWORLD #5 (OF 5), $3.99: Last issue.

BLACK CAT #6, $3.99: Daredevil guest-stars. Have they had an affair yet? If not, it's only a matter of time.

KNULL #1 (OF 5), $5.99: I haven't read word one about this character, and don't intend to.

LOGAN: BLACK WHITE AND BLOOD #1 (OF 4), $5.99: Anthology, with stories from various times in Wolverine's long life. Spoiler: He doesn't die in any of them. But I bet a bunch of old girlfriends do.

LUNA SNOW: WORLD TOUR #1 (ONE-SHOT), $4.99: I said I enjoyed "One World Under Doom," but I didn't say I enjoyed every aspect of the sprawling crossover. Case in point: Doom's Division, which I consider the weakest of the spin-off miniseries. It was set in Asia and featured Asian characters, most of whom I didn't know. And the ones I did, like Sunfire, might as well have been new characters, given how they were mis-written. And it was drawn in a sort of off-brand manga style that I would be embarrassed to show to manga fans. The upshot is: I didn't get excited about Luna Snow (or anyone else) in Doom's Division, and I won't be following her here. Heck, after this, Sunfire may be on my Do Not Resuscitate list.

SAI: DIMENSIONAL RIVALS #1 (OF 5), $4.99: Another Peach Momoko fantasy. Marvel keeps her busy with these vanity projects, so I guess they want to hang on to her. Unless they sell really well, in which case they're not vanity projects.

'ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM'

31053374465?profile=RESIZE_400x31053374488?profile=RESIZE_400xDUNGEONS OF DOOM #1 (OF 3), $5.99:

Writer: Benjamin Percy
Penciller: Robert Gill
Cover Artist: Geoff Shaw

In the aftermath of ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM, with Doom's castle empty and masterless, the superpowers of the world race to claim and control the untold power and technology that await inside. But when an explosion sends them all plummeting into a dungeon labyrinth that none of them knew was there, what began as an arms race becomes a terrifying game of survival. Who, if any, will survive? And what horrors lie within the DUNGEONS OF DOOM?

I'm committed to following up on the repercussions of "One World Under Doom," one of the few "events" of recent years I've enjoyed. Apparently that requires me to follow up with titles like this, which says "Doom" right there at the top. I'm also following Fantastic Four because I think it will eventually be connected, and Captain America, which I know will be connected (with issue #6). There's also a Will of Doom one-shot that I think I already have.

Anyway, it appears that Red Hulk still has a title to hang out in, at least for three issues.

FALLEN ANGELS! After opening the mysterious coffin plaguing Alfheim, Strange and Angela come face-to-face with the dark wizard VYRBODIN! Strange attempts to capture him by tapping into a dangerous new form of power, but Vyrbodin escapes and puts a plan into motion that will endanger innocent lives across the Nine Realms. Strange will have to move Heven and Earth to stop him before his power grows …

Guest-starring Angela. This book is effectively now a companion to Mortal Thor, as Strange operates out of Asgard, relies on ancient Norse magic (which I hope they're basing on the Elder Eddas) and functions in 9 of the 10 worlds. (I get the impression he can't go to Earth, probably because it has its own, separate Sorcerer Supreme.) I really like this concept, since learning the magic of an entirely different plane of existence will elevate Strange over Dr. Doom (who will eventually return), which needs to be done to maintain a plausible balance of power in the Marvel Universe.

The Fury story in Ultimate Universe: One Year In really was quite memorable. Say, is this book also going all the way to issue #24 like Ultimate Spider-Man and the others? That would place the end of the Ultimate Universe somewhere in May.

SUPERBOY REPORTING FOR DUTY! As Superboy is called for his first mission for General Lane, Clark wonders if he made the right decision. As the tension builds, the U.S. government prepares a contingency plan that could put our hero down for good. Plus, Pete Ross has a secret — one he's reluctant to share with his best friend.

I guess we should consider ourselves lucky Superboy's mission for the government doesn't have anything to do with Venezuela. Or Greenland. Also, I'm assuming Pete's secret is the familiar one from the Silver Age.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA :THE NAIL — THE COMPLETE DELUXE EDITION HC (2026 EDITION),

31053388484?profile=RESIZE_400x(W) Alan Davis (A/CA) Alan Davis, Mark Farmer
IN A WORLD WITHOUT A JUSTICE LEAGUE, WHO WILL DEFEND US? Formed by the World’s Greatest Heroes, the Justice League of America stands tall as the mightiest group of protectors Earth has to offer. Since the group’s founding, one hero above all others has stood as their inspiration, guiding light, and moral center: Superman. Now imagine a world without the Man of Steel. Welcome to the alternate history of JLA: The Nail. In a fascinating story of tiny accidents that cascade into cataclysmic disasters, writer/artist Alan Davis (Batman and the Outsiders) joined by legendary inker Mark Farmer (Legion of Super-Heroes) creates a world that never knew a Superman and a Justice League that is about to face their greatest test of might and morality. All because of something as simple as a nail.

If you haven't read this book (and its sequels, to a degree), I recommend it for the Davis art alone. He is at his peak, and to my delight, his story had more internal logic, consistent characterization and plausible plot points than many stories churned out by full-time writers. This is one of my favorite "Elseworlds."

NEW GODS #1 (FACSIMILE EDITION), $3.99: I have this is in so many formats, including the original comic books, that I see no reason for another version. I know I don't speak for everyone on this score, but what I want in facsimile editions is comics from 1937 to the early 1960s, comics that haven't ever been reprinted before, or where the cover story is in an omnibus somewhere, but I've never read the rest of the book. Maybe the youngs would disagree, but I don't see any reason to reprint books that have been reprinted a thousand times before. You could probably get a whole New Gods collection of some sort in the discount bin of your local comic shop pretty cheap.

SUPERGIRL #9, $3.99

31053390080?profile=RESIZE_400x31053390456?profile=RESIZE_400x(W) Sophie Campbell (A) Joe Quinones (CA) Sophie Campbell
NEW YEAR, NEW KARA! As the clock and the town of Midvale count down to midnight, Supergirl finds herself surrounded by new friends and found family as she ponders her New Year's resolution. Will she turn over a new leaf, finally free of the shadow of her famous cousin, Superman? Plus, Lesla has a little secret that could lead to disaster!

Supergirl #6 was a Halloween-themed story, Supergirl #7 was a Thanksgiving-themed story, Supergirl #8 was a Christmas/Hanukkah-themed story and now Supergirl #9 is a New Year's-themed story. What's issue #10 going to be? MLK Day? Valentine's Day? Presidents' Day? Or will that last one be re-named Trump Day by February?

Also, out of curiosity: When did Krypto become Supergirl's pet? In this series, or earlier? Is it because of the movies? I confess I haven't been paying attention to this particular aspect.

THE HIT SERIES CONCEPT RETURNS! Written by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, Steve Orlando, Alyssa Wong and Jordie Bellaire Art by Mitch Gerads, Rossi Gifford, Karen S. Darboe and Paulina Ganucheau Witness thrilling tales starring the Amazon Princess — embellished in the color of her famous lasso. This round, the Eisner Award-winning team of Tom King and Mitch Gerads (Mister Miracle, Batman: One Bad Day) reunites, Steve Orlando has Diana search for the truth in a land of lies, Alyssa Wong brings Wonder Woman to the Spirit World, and the team behind Wonder Woman: The Adventures of Young Diana is back for more!

I enjoyed the original Wonder Woman: Black and Gold more than I have similar efforts with other heroes. Weirdly, WW having so many origins means that anthology writers can basically write the story they want to write, and some origin or other in Hypertime will back them up. You want Diana in World War II? Go for it! You want relevancy in a white pantsuit? DC's got you covered! Does your story need Wonder Woman to come from a clay statue, or to be the daughter of Zeus? Doesn't matter, write what you want!

QUEEN MERA RISES! As Arthur continues to duke it out in the major DC K.O. event, the hidden kingdom of Atlantis at last emerges! But all is not well, and Queen Mera finds herself face-to-face with the deadliest foe to attack their fair kingdom yet! New threats, new drama, a trip to the throne of Kahndaq, and the return of Black Manta!

Ever since the days Nick Cardy was drawing Aquaman, I thought Mera ought to be the star of any Aqua-book. For one reason, she's way more powerful than the Sea King. For another, her backstory is more interesting.  For a third, the Li'l Cap'n had a crush on her.

So, when Jai discovers Godzilla responds to specific energy signals he can send into the atmosphere, he creates the perfect opportunity to stage high-profile heists in the middle of Godzilla attacks. But these heists put Jai on the radar of some very dangerous people—people who want Jai to work with them to pull off the most dangerous job the world has ever seen.

January 13, 2026

Lore War shows us a universe rebuilt in Lore’s image. The crews of the Theseus and the Defiant are scattered across the universe with no memory of who they once were—some even worship Lore as their God. Lore has won; his rule is absolute. But the Sisko remains, and there are forces who wish to remind him of his power.

From the Eisner-nominated writers of Star Trek, Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly; the critically acclaimed writer of Star Trek: Defiant, Christopher Cantwell; the Eisner-nominated writer of Shaxs’ Best Day, Ryan North; and artists Davide Tinto and Derek Charm comes the next big Star Trek event!

Illustrated by Giorgio Spalletta and Dan Panosian

Alice faces her most perilous adversary yet — her own past!

It’s been years since Alice returned to the real world, now living peacefully with her endlessly curious, young daughter Evelyn.

Wonderland may now be a distant memory, but beyond the looking glass, things are far from they once were as the realm cracks and crumbles into decay.

A resentful Cheshire Cat seeks out the one thing that can fix what’s broken, but this time, it isn’t Alice he’s set his sights on…

With time running out, Alice will have to confront her past adventures — before they claim her beloved daughter.

I've never actually read Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking-Glass. Should I be admitting that? But I've seen and read so many references, satires and take-offs — like this one — that I'm not sure I need to read them. I'm as familiar with Alice in Wonderland as I am with Peter Pan and Wizard of Oz ... which I also haven't read. When I was a kid, they seemed to be kid stuff, and I was too haughty for kid stuff as a kid. But I saw the movies!

(W) Garth Ennis (A/CA) Jacen Burrows

BABS is sharp, subversive, hilarious, and absolutely one of the best comics of 2024,” says CBR—and now the hit Ennis/Burrows sword-and-sorcery satire returns! A day of over-the-top carnage in a gladiator arena leads Babs and her partner-in-barbarism Izzy directly into a strange, unfamiliar, bizarre situation: they actually have money! That’s good, right? Wrong—because it’s about to lead them down a dark, horrific road to the devastated wasteland of Mordynn.

Sure, S&S comics are easy to satirize. Heck, I did it in high school. But Ennis does it well, and I'm entertained. What more can you ask?

LIFE AND DEATH OF FRITZ THE CAT TP, $19.99

31054561458?profile=RESIZE_400xThe iconic comics that started it all, making R. Crumb famous — against his will.

Robert Crumb's first iconic character — and still possibly his most — was Fritz the Cat: the horny, high, hipster feline whose wild adventures and sexual escapades captivated countercultural audiences from the mid-’60s until 1972, when Ralph Bakshi turned the strips into an X-rated animated film that Crumb hated so much, he famously killed off the character and never returned to him.

The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat contains all the Fritz stories from the earliest sketchbook-drawn tales ("Hey, Ol' Cat!" and "Fritz Comes On Strong") to the wild adventure stories ("Special Agent for the C.I.A.") to the classic "peak" Fritz stories ("Fritz the No-Good") all the way to the despairing "Fritz the Cat, Superstar" with its infamous icepick ending. Plus an introduction by Crumb, sketchbook pages, and more in a new paperback edition.

Praise

"One of the world's greatest cartoonists ever." — Art Spiegelman

"The intimacy of Robert Crumb's work has fascinated me for more than half my life." — KAWS

"The most monolithic visual prankster of the last century." — Lena Dunham

I lost interest in Fritz about the same time as R. Crumb, but not because of the movie. It's because I grew up. Still, he's an iconic figure in American culture, and probably worth having on the shelf. Probably. I don't think Imma get it, because I don't think I'll ever make time to read it.

31053768700?profile=RESIZE_400xMARY SHELLEY THE ETERNAL DREAM GN, $19.99

(W) Alessandro Di Virgilio (A/CA) Manuela Santoni

The extraordinary life of the woman who created one of fiction's most enduring characters: Frankenstein's monster. Born at the turn of the 19th century to the famous philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft (forerunner of the feminist movement) and William Godwin (novelist and radical politician), Mary Shelley lived a life in constant flight from social conformity. Her struggle birthed a pop culture phenomenon. Now in print for the first time in English, Mary Shelley: The Eternal Dream chronicles Shelley's relationships with other important artists and writers, including her eventual husband Percy Shelley, and the "butterfly effect" of love, hardship, tragedy, and inspiration that led to the creation of the infamous monster.

There can't be too many books about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

(W) Philip Nelson, Cee Raymond (A/CA) Cee Raymond

This month, from Antarctic Press! In a crumbling city where blood runs cheaper than gas, a brooding cabbie with a taxi death machine cruises the streets, deploying his own brand of justice and leaving carnage in his wake. Equal parts grindhouse horror and surrealist noir, AxiCab launches readers into a nightmarish urban sprawl where every ride might be your last. Created by television producer Philip Nelson, AxiCab is a bold, bloody debut that dares to go off-meter.

I have no idea if this is any good, but it's a first issue and I liked the covers.

  • AVENGERS LEGACY ISSUE #800!

I check in with the Avengers from time-to-time every couple of years or so just to see if it's gotten any better since BMB ruined it. I had been planning to buy this one, but now I find out he's back. Well, it's only a back-up; we'll see.

Pete Ross has a secret — one he's reluctant to share with his best friend.
I'm assuming Pete's secret is the familiar one from the Silver Age.

    That he's gay?

If you haven't read [Justice League of America: The Nail]  (and its sequels, to a degree), I recommend it for the Davis art alone. He is at his peak, and to my delight, his story had more internal logic, consistent characterization and plausible plot points than many stories churned out by full-time writers.

    What he said.

I know I don't speak for everyone on this score, but what I want in facsimile editions is comics from 1937 to the early 1960s, comics that haven't ever been reprinted before

You speak for me, for one.

Or will that last one be re-named Trump Day by February?

Bite your tongue! (Actually, Trump's birthday is more likely to become "Trump Day," replacing Presidents day.)

Also, out of curiosity: When did Krypto become Supergirl's pet?

Um... I haven't been paying attention to this particular aspect, either; I just roll with the flow.

DEATH OF SUPERMAN ABSOLUTE EDITION HC (BOOK MARKET), $125.00
DEATH OF SUPERMAN ABSOLUTE EDITION HC (DIRECT MARKET), $150.00

I wonder why the "direct market" edition is 25 bucks more expensive than the "book market" edition...?

ONI PRESS - Two in one week? Is it Christmas again?

Wasn't Cruel Universe (v2) #6 supposed to ship last week...?

BABS: THE BLACK ROAD SOUTH #1

Here's one I didn't pre-oder (because I didn't know about it before FOC). All AHOY! comics are supposed to be on my p&h, but sometimes new titles fall through the cracks if I neglect to pre-order them.  We'll see (that is, I'll see).

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF FRITZ THE CAT - [R. Crumb]'s an iconic figure in American culture, and probably worth having on the shelf.

I don't have this and and have never read it. I probably will get it. Wish I had had the opportunity pre-order it, though, Fantagraphics!

MARY SHELLEY THE ETERNAL DREAM GN - There can't be too many books about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

I don't disagree, but I'm runnning out of shelf space!

This is going to be a relatively heavy week for me.

  • That he's gay?

I confess that crossed my mind.

Bite your tongue! (Actually, Trump'sbirtday is more likely to become "Trump Day," replacing Presidents day.)

    Good point.

Wasn't Cruel Universe (v2) #6 supposed to ship last week...?

Could be. Maybe it did. Lunar had it this week, so I posted it.
