JSA #17
(W) Jeff Lemire (A) Gavin Guidry (CA) Dave Johnson
A MAJOR THREAT STARES DOWN GOTHAM CITY!
The heroes have assembled, but can they work together long enough to face down this existential threat to the citizens of Gotham?
"Year One" chapter 5.
If you've been reading the JSA thread, you know what all the above means. And since it's not a spoiler, I'll tell you: The existential threat is Ultra-Humanite. This issue's cover features three members of the cast, as did the last. All the previous "Year One" covers featured two cast members. All together, there are 12: Amazing Man, Atom, Doctor Fate, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Hourman, Johnny Thunder, Sandman, Spectre and Wonder Woman. Next issue's cover features all 12, most of whom (if not all) will be charter members of the Justice Society, in what amounts to a new origin (displacing DC Special #29/Secret Origins #31).

AVENGERS (2023) #36
Writer: Jed Mackay
Art: Farid Karami
Cover: C. CafuRussell Dauterman
Superstar writer Jed MacKay closes out his time with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes this March in AVENGERS #36. Three years of dark mysteries, epic quests and cosmos-shattering battles comes to a head in a giant-sized, can’t-miss final issue, featuring artwork by current series artist Farid Karami. To celebrate this pivotal moment in Avengers history, original series artist C.F. Villa returns with a special farewell variant cover that mirrors Stuart Immonen’s cover for the debut issue of MacKay’s run.
From the introduction of the Twilight Court and the Ashen Combine to Kang’s temporal machinations and Blood Hunt, it’s been an era of dramatic triumphs and epic stakes. Now, everything Jed MacKay has built comes crashing down in this startling finale that will redefine the Avengers’ future!
On leaving the title, MacKay said, "It’s sad to say goodbye to the Avengers after the last few years of chronicling their adventures, but we certainly had some fun- introducing them to the Impossible City, putting them against their old nemesis, Kang, and even putting them through their paces in the blood-soaked first ever Red Band event! I got to work some of the best artists working today on some of the biggest characters Marvel has, and I'll always remember my time with Earth's Mightiest Heroes fondly!"
AVENGERS #36 will also set up the next era of Avengers. Fans curious about what’s next should look no further than this summer’s ARMAGEDDON including upcoming lead-in stories to the event like Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon; Captain America #6, the start of the next arc of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s Captain America run; and the recently announced Comics Giveaway Day™ title, Armageddon/X-Men #1 CGD 2026.
I read some issues of McKay's Avengers for some event or other, and was so baffled (they live in a sentient, orbital city?) that I decided to get the back issues up to that point. Plus, I was hoping to get some Avengers 1,000,000 BCE stories, but it turned out they were in the previous run, by Jason Aaron. Anyway, I've picked up Avengers ever since, but with less and less enthusiasm. So I'll get this one, just to complete the set.

NARCO #1 (OF 5)
Fan-favorite writer Doug Wagner and artist Daniel Hillyard — the duo behind beloved series Plastic, Plush, Vinyl and I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer — will reteam for the upcoming thriller, Narco. This five-issue miniseries is set to launch in March 2026 from Image Comics.
Marcus Wesphal blacks out from the slightest surge of excitement — a narcoleptic curse that’s kept him quiet, calm and locked away at home. But when he witnesses the girl next door’s murder and collapses, he wakes to find himself the prime suspect. Now Marcus has one chance to clear his name: outrun his failing body, reconstruct the moments he lost, and hunt a killer before he blacks out again … possibly for good.
"If you haven’t figured it out yet, Daniel and I are a little bit obsessed with quirky horror, AND we're both huge fans of Alfred Hitchcock," said Wagner. "We’ve been talking for years about what OUR version of his works would look like. Well, Narco is that version. It combines our weird sense of horror and humor with classics like Rear Window and Psycho."
Hillyard added: "A Hitchcockian thriller with a whodunnit story and our usual twist of the unusual. If any of that piqued your interest then Narco might just be the one for you. Grab a pop tart, pet your possum (not a euphemism) and see if you can figure out who the killer is."
I'll take a look at it.

In preparation for the imminent collapse of human society, give into your most deeply buried desires and distract yourself from the flaming ruin that awaits us all as the devious minds of writers Mike Carey (Hellblazer), Melissa Flores (Power Rangers Prime), and Jeff Jensen (Green River Killer) conjoin with apocalyptic artists Kano (EC’s Epitaphs from the Abyss), Lukas Ketner (Count Crowley), and more to bring our fast-devolving civilization to its much-deserved end.
Still getting the EC books, but every time I have a spasm of frugality they go on the chopping block. How many spasms can they survive?

NECTAR #1
Vault and #1 Audible and New York Times bestselling author Jeremy Robinson have announced Nectar, a terrifying new horror comic book series. Written by Robinson and drawn by the phenomenal artistic duo Annapaola Martello and Francesco Francini, with colors by Steve Canon, letters by Jim Campbell, and design by Tim Daniel, Nectar will take readers on asupernatural thrill ride where horror comes on gossamer wings.
In Nectar, an island village off Salem, Massachusetts, is inundated by a strange species of butterflies that spread the Dancing Plague and have a very particular taste in nectar...human blood.
“When my wife, Hilaree, and I started spitballing story concepts, all I knew was that I wanted to create a new Victorian monster to rival Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and Werewolves,” said Robinson. “Our twisted imaginations went to work and just minutes later we had blood sucking butterflies and the dancing plague wrapped together, along with the title: Nectar. I loved the idea so much, I started writing the script the next day.
“A month later, script complete, we signed on an amazing artist tag team—Annapaola Martello and Francesco Francini,” continued Robinson. “Every page they delivered was amazing, and then our colorist, Steve Canon, metamorphosed the black and white pages into something brilliant and beautiful to look at, butterflies and blood-soaked corpses alike! It’s rare to work on a project that is inspired from beginning to end. Nectar is one of those unique experiences that comes along just a few times in a creator’s career.”
Jeremy Robinson is the #1 Audible and New York Times bestselling author of nearly 100 novels, published in fourteen languages, including INFINITE, THE OTHERS, and the GOOD BOYS trilogy. His high-octane blend of science fiction, horror, and action has captivated millions of readers worldwide. A television series based on his cult-favorite novel PROJECT NEMESIS is currently in development with director Chad Stahelski (John Wick 1–4) and produced by Original Film and Sony Pictures Television.
Robinson’s latest creative frontier is Breakneck Comics, his imprint for publishing bold, bizarre, and beautifully illustrated graphic novels—three per year, to match the furious pace of his prose output.

Is the Skinless Man named "Frank"?
I read some issues of McKay's Avengers for some event or other, and was so baffled (they live in a sentient, orbital city?) that I decided...
It is at this point your sentence veered away from where I thought it was going. I try to check in with the Avengers every once in a while, just to see if they're telling stories I have any interest in reading, but apart from a few limited series here and there, I haven't been able to get back into it since BMB's "New" Avengers. And that's a shame. I was considering this issue, but after reading you're comments I think I'll pass.

Still haven't seen Ultraman v21 (from two weeks ago?). Maybe this week.

Let's find out... "Three."
