I HATE THIS PLACE #6

Today Skybound unveiled a first look at I Hate This Place #6, which kicks off the second story arc of last year’s hit supernatural horror series from writer Kyle Starks (Assassin Nation, The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton), artist Artyom Topilin (Ice Cream Man Presents Quarantine Comix Special), colorist Lee Loughridge (Deadly Class, The Good Asian), and letterer Pat Brosseau (Birthright, Manifest Destiny).

Trudy’s past comes back to haunt her, which wouldn’t be so bad if she and Gabby weren’t already literally haunted by unimaginable forces of evil on a daily basis. Can’t a gal catch a break?

I Hate This Place was the sleeper hit of 2022 and we’re thrilled to be back for more,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “This next arc is about to get even more personal for our heroines, and we can’t wait to keep scaring the hell out of you!”

To provide retailers and fans with options, each issue of I Hate This Place will have open-to-order covers by Topilin with clean and explicit cover options, featuring the standard series title and the explicit version of the series’ original title, Fuck This Place.

PHANTOM ROAD #1

Eisner Award winning creator Jeff Lemire (The Bone Orchard Mythos, Little Monsters) and Eisner Award winning artist Gabriel Hernández Walta (The Vision, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: Old Man Whittier) reunite after their Sentient success with a bold new series titled Phantom Road. The grindhouse horror/fantasy mashup will hit shelves in March 2023 from Image Comics.

"As soon as I first worked with Gabriel on Sentient I knew he was a collaborator I needed to do more with. We began talking about a big creator-owned series at Image," said Lemire in an exclusive on the announcement with ScreenRant. "Something massive in scope like all the books we loved when we were getting into comics. Something with the scope of Preacher and Sandman and The Walking Dead. We began putting ideas together and Phantom Road is the result. A sprawling mash-up of sci-fi, horror and character driven road movie. We can’t wait to share it with everyone."

Walta added: "Working on Phantom Road is such a gift! Doing a creator-owned book with Jeff is something I've been wanting to do for many years and having the chance to collaborate with Jordie, Steve, and Greg is a real joy. Also ... seeing the Image logo in our book is just a blast!!"

Phantom Road follows Dom, a long-haul truck driver attempting to stay ahead of his tragic past. When he stops one night to assist Birdie, who has been in a massive car crash, they pull an artifact from the wreckage that throws their lives into fifth gear. Suddenly, a typical midnight run has become a frantic journey through a surreal world where Dom and Birdie find themselves the quarry of strange and impossible monsters.

Mad Max: Fury Road meets The Sandman in this high-octane adventure wrapped in a dark fantasy aesthetic.

COSMIC GHOST RIDER #1

Story: Stephanie Phillips |  Art: Juann Cabal |  Cover: Valerio Giangiordano

One of Marvel’s most outrageous breakout characters of the past decade, Cosmic Ghost Rider, will return this March in a brand-new solo series! Announced by Polygon, COSMIC GHOST RIDER will be written by Stephanie Phillips in one of her first works for Marvel Comics along with the upcoming Rogue & Gambit series and drawn by superstar artist Juann Cabal!

Since his 2018 creation by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw, this future version of Frank Castle was a mega hit with fans due to his extraordinary origins and his unique style of dishing out justice! The character’s saga will only get more wild in this upcoming sprawling space adventure with even more shocking twists and turns!

In a far-flung corner of deep space, Frank Castle has eked out a quiet existence, and his days as Cosmic Ghost Rider are finally behind him. But across the universe, a vicious bounty hunter is leaving a trail of bodies in his wake and his name is…Cosmic Ghost Rider?! When Frank’s peaceful existence is shattered, he must suit up once more and face his most savage enemy yet — himself!

“I love the humor and absurdity of Cosmic Ghost Rider, and because he’s a newer character I feel like there’s lots of potential space (pun intended) to push him in new directions,” Phillips told Polygon. “I’m excited to play with Marvel’s cosmic characters and write something that feels really new for me and for Frank Castle as well.”

  • Making the future Ghost Rider Frank Castle raises the issue of why the current Ghost Rider isn't Frank Castle. I mean, what with the "Vengeance!" and all. Seems like his kind of gig.

HALLOWS’ EVE #1 (OF 5)

Story: Erica Schultz | Art/Cover: Michael Dowling | Variant: Stanley “Artgerm” Lau

HALLOWS’ EVE has arrived! After her sold out debut in last week’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14, Spidey’s newest foe has gripped fan’s interest with her killer look and outrageous abilities, and now it’s time to learn more about her upcoming solo series!

Hallows’ Eve’s first appearance, which also served as a prelude to the Spider-Man/X-Men epic DARK WEB, revealed that that this devious new baddie is none other than Janine Godbe, the loyal longtime girlfriend of Ben Reilly. Her transformation was a gift from Madelyne Pryor! But DARK WEB is only the start of Hallows’ Eve’s saga as the character headlines her own limited series. The five-issue series will be written by Erica Schultz, who made her Marvel Comics debut in Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #3 and is writing the upcoming X-23: Deadly Regenesis series, and drawn by Michael Dowling, known for his acclaimed work on titles like Black Cat and Jane Foster & the Might Thor. The upcoming story will keep fans guessing as it explores the exciting and unpredictable potential of Hallows’ Eve’s powers. The secrets behind her mystical masks and the dangerous abilities they grant her are unlike any the Marvel Universe has ever witnessed and power on this level will attract all kinds of unwanted attention.

Janine Godbe’s world has been blown up several times in her life, but after the events of DARK WEB, she’s in control of her future for the first time in years. With a bag of super-powered masks and a chip on her shoulder, Janine’s crime spree as Hallows’ Eve puts her on the run from the police, but there’s someone else after her too … someone seeking to take her newfound power for themselves!

“Having the opportunity to pen a character’s first solo miniseries is incredibly exciting and incredibly nerve racking!” Schultz said. “Despite Janine having been created in the '90s, this is the first time we’ll see her on her own for more than just a few pages. I really hope fans enjoy a deeper look into Janine and what makes her tick.”

I AM IRON MAN #1 (OF 5)

Story: Murewa Ayodele | Art/Cover: Dotun Akande

Honoring the character’s 60th anniversary, a new Iron Man series will allow longtime readers and new fans alike to witness Tony Stark at his very best in glorious exploits set throughout his incredible heroic career!

I AM IRON MAN is pure Golden Avenger action brought to you by writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Dotun Akande. This dynamic pair of rising stars have already showcased their talents in Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #1, the Avengers Unlimited Infinity Comic, and again in Iron Man #25. Now, they’ll help Marvel Comics celebrate one of its premier superheroes with this glorious collection of missions from every major Iron Man era! There is no better way to mark Iron Man’s milestone than seeing him fight his way through intense showdowns as the Earth’s mightiest hero that fans adore! Kaiju battles under the sea, alien invasions in the desert, a rescue mission in outer space and more are to be expected in this incredible new series.

Beneath the red and gold armor is a hopeless romantic, a genius inventor, a war hero, a billionaire, an Avenger and a person, TONY STARK. Journey through the rich history of Iron Man — telling stories never seen before that are set in iconic eras of ol’ Shellhead — starting with the Silver Age and continuing through the classic eras of Archie Goodwin, the '90s, today and beyond!

“Iron Man has been my favorite character in all of fiction for years now,” Ayodele said. “I’ve loved the character for so long that I had written a proposal for this series even before Dotun and I broke into comics. So, we are super grateful that Marvel made our wildest dreams come true by giving us this opportunity to tell stories that celebrate 60 years of the awesome existence of Tony Stark.”

“Every issue of I AM IRON MAN is set in an iconic era of Iron Man, explores some deep emotional wounds of Tony Stark, is adrenaline-pumping with exciting set pieces, and is rendered in beautiful illustrations by Dotun Akande (my favorite comic book artist and best friend),” Ayodele continued. “It's the series for Iron Man fans and anyone that has ever wanted to get into Iron Man comics.”

“Working on an Iron Man title — and an anniversary series for that matter — is a dream come true,” Akande added. “That dream is a little over a decade now. Every single line of artwork is a decade-long itch scratched and a very personal love letter to Tony Stark (Iron Man), his creators, other inspiring and amazing storytellers that have worked on his comics, and his very passionate fans. Luckily for me, I found an equally enthusiastic fan of the character in my best friend, Murewa. We have a series of exhilarating, heroic tales we’re sure will be enjoyed by both Iron Man stans and new readers. It’s going to be a thrilling ride. Steel yourself.”

SPIDER-GWEN: SHADOW CLONES #1 (OF 5)

Story: Emily Kim | Art: Kei Zama | Cover: David Nakayama | Variants: Peach Momoko, Greg Land

Fresh off SPIDER-GWEN: GWENVERSE, which introduced exciting heroic versions of Ghost-Spider from throughout the multiverse, Gwen Stacy of Earth-65 will headline a sequel limited series. But this time around, instead of meeting new allies, she’ll be confronted by dangerous new foes!

Written by Emily Kim (Silk, Tiger Division) and drawn by Kei Zama (Edge of Spider-Verse, Marvel’s Voices: Identity), SPIDER-GWEN: SHADOW CLONES will turn Ghost-Spider’s life upside down as she’s targeted by clones of herself based on Spidey’s greatest villains! Over the course of five daring issues, readers will see the debuts of a host of new Gwen-villains, all once again designed by comics visionary Peach Momoko!

Hailing from an alternate reality where Gwen was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained spider-like powers, Ghost-Spider has been embraced by comic fans since she debuted in 2014. Over the years, readers have watched Ghost-Spider rise as one of Marvel’s brightest heroes but now they and Gwen alike will witness her at her most twisted!

Ghost-Spider comes face-to-face with some of the deadliest Spider-Man villains, including Doc Ock, Sandman, Vulture and more! But wait … why do they all look like …Gwen?! Follow Gwen down a dark path as she must find and stop whoever is cloning her into infamous Marvel villains!

“I was a little nervous taking on Spider-Gwen because she’s such an iconic hero,” Kim said. “But the rich story premise and fantastic team has made the process a blast. I’ve quickly fallen in love with Gwen and her unique voice and am excited for people to see how she handles a crazy slew of Gwen clones.”

“There’s a lot of fun things about drawing Gwen Stacy and Ghost-Spider,” Zama added. “I’m especially exciting to draw bold battle scenes of Ghost-Spider and come up with ways to create exciting compositions. It’s also really fun to draw the expressions of Gwen Stacy. I'm really glad to draw these new villains designed by Peach Momoko. I didn't expect to collaborate with her in this way.”

After designing the looks for Gwen Stacy versions of Captain America, Thor, and more for SPIDER-GWEN: GWENVERSE, Peach Momoko has once again lent her visionary talents to craft all-new looks for these five new foes. See Gwen transformed into fierce new versions of Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Vulture, Rhino, and Kraven the Hunter on these eye-catching design sheets that will also be showcased as special design variant covers for each issue of the series!

“When designing the Gwen-villains, I wanted to make sure the original villain’s color palette was mainly used and give the energy, youth, and fun that Gwen represents,” Momoko explained.

To celebrate this villainous new group that will turn Gwen’s life upside down, superstar artist Greg Land is back with more homage variant covers. These pinup style covers pay homage to Land’s iconic variant cover of EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2, Ghost-Spider’s first appearance, and will adorn all five issues of the series.

  • Like Elvis, Gwen Stacy has had a longer career dead than alive.

SPIDER-MAN UNFORGIVEN #1

Written by TIM SEELEY

Art by SID KOTIAN

Cover by KYLE HOTZ

In 2023, a band of vampires will creep out of the darkest depths of the Marvel Universe to do the unthinkable — save the world! The FORGIVEN, the fan-favorite team of unlikely super heroes that debuted in 2011’s Fear Itself: Hulk vs. Dracula, will star in a series of one-shots next year. Written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Sid Kotian, the three-part story will reintroduce these strange heroes and see them make big waves across the Marvel Universe, interacting with the likes of the X-Men, Spider-Man, and, the team’s inspiration, Captain America.

Who can resist the call of the blood? A group of vigilante vampires have decided to fight crime — while at the same time, wage a desperate war within themselves to reject their own bloodthirsty natures! The Forgiven’s new saga will kick off in SPIDER-MAN: UNFORGIVEN #1 where the team will confront a new foe with a desire to transform vampires into their most powerful and violent selves. The storyline will then continue with more high-stakes vampire drama in X-MEN: UNFORGIVEN #1 and AVENGERS: UNFORGIVEN #1. This epic struggle for the souls of the soulless will make readers rethink the place these creatures of the night have in the Marvel Universe!

"I love Marvel super heroes, no doubt, but I've got a special obsession with Marvel's horror heroes,” Seeley explained. “UNFORGIVEN gives that creepy, sexy, weird underbelly a chance to shine as a horrific conspiracy unites a crew of vampires with Spider-Man, the X-Men and Captain America, and shows us the stark differences (and surprisingly similarities) of those who are gifted with the ability to fight evil, and those who have to carry evil's curse. By the end of this epic event, we'll have toured a lot of dark corners of the Marvel Universe, and reminded readers that monsters are at its shrunken black heart!"

Check out the cover of SPIDER-MAN: UNFORGIVEN below and see the FORGIVEN team up with some of Marvel’s greatest heroes next year! For more information, visit Marvel.com.

THE GEORGE HERRIMAN LIBRARY: KRAZY & IGNATZ 1925-1927

George Herriman | Fantagraphics | 228 pages | $49.99

Meticulously and lovingly restored, this exquisite, generously sized volume collects the acclaimed and groundbreaking Krazy Kat Sunday strips of 1925, 1926, and 1927.

This Eisner Award–nominated series showcases one of the most renowned and celebrated comic strips in the art form's history as it strides boldly through the mid-1920s, its quirky characters in full flower in this gorgeous, archival hardcover collection.

In this volume: Ignatz repeatedly sets elaborate traps for Krazy (long before the Road Runner), adventures on the "enchanted mesa," wacky weather, literal cliffhangers — and what happens when Santa and the stork arrive at the same chimney at the same moment? BONUS: The most complete collection of Herriman's long-lost Book of Magic pages ever assembled.

With incisive essays by Herriman scholars, this entry in our ongoing series makes it plain to Herriman fans and newcomers alike why historians, scholars, and cartoonists consider this to be the best comic strip ever created and why The Comics Journal proclaimed it to be "the greatest comic strip of the 20th Century." Krazy Kat is an ongoing story of a (head-) achingly unrequited love triangle. Krazy adores Ignatz, who returns that affection by launching literal bricks at Krazy's cranium. Offisa Pup loves Krazy and seeks to protect "her" (Herriman always maintained that Krazy is genderless) by tossing Ignatz in the pokey. With this deceptively simple structure, Herriman builds entire worlds of meaning into the actions, building thematic depth and sweeping his readers up with the looping verbal and visual rhythms of his characters' unique dialogue and his loopy, ever-shifting surrealistic backgrounds.

The George Herriman Library: Krazy & Ignatz 1925-1927 is part of the The George Herriman Library series.

"One could argue the claim — confidently, persuasively, and with an all-but-inexhaustible store of ever-fresh evidence — that George Herriman was one of the very great artists, in any medium, of the 20th century." — Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize–winning author (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay)

"At this point, no one should need any convincing that Krazy Kat is one of the greatest works of comic art ever created, and that it should form the foundation of any good collection." — The A.V. Club

"For nearly 30 years, George Herriman's hilarious, poetic masterpiece Krazy Kat graced the Sunday pages of America's newspapers. This new hardcover collection brings back into print the inventive language, haunting vistas, and beguiling brick throwing that makes this strip so special. Perfect for Herriman connoisseurs and brand-new readers." — San Francisco Review of Books

JUNGLE COMICS #13

LAST ON HIS FEET JACK JOHNSON & BATTLE OF CENTURY HC

Story: Adrian Matejka | Art: Youssef Daoudi | Liveright | $29.99

On the morning of July 4, 1910, thousands of boxing fans stormed a newly built stadium in Reno, Nevada, to witness an epic showdown. Jack Johnson, the world's first Black heavyweight champion — and most infamous athlete in the world because of his race — was paired against Jim Jeffries, a former heavyweight champion then heralded as the "great white hope." It was the height of the Jim Crow era, and spectators were eager for Jeffries to restore the racial hierarchy that Johnson had pummeled with his quick fists. Through a combination of breathtaking illustrations and striking verse, Last on His Feet honors a contentious civil rights figure who has for more than a century been denied his proper due.

  • I'm not a boxing fan, but even I've heard of Jackie Johnson.

LAURIE LIPTON DRAWING HC

Art: Laurie Lipton | Last Gasp | $49.99

A large hardcover edition of Laurie Lipton's most recent work. Lipton draws on canvases that are improbably large, using only pencil and charcoal. In her sprawling phantasmagorias, Lipton addresses social media, unchecked consumerism, intellectual decline, environmental catastrophe, and soul-crushing isolation of modern existence. Using countless crosshatches, she builds images that present our modern world in scathing critique.

LION & THE EAGLE TP

Story: Garth Ennis | Art: P. J. Holden | Cover: Keith Burns | Aftershock | $24.99

The complete oversized prestige format miniseries from the mind of Garth Ennis!

1944: Imperial Japan still commands most of Asia. Determined to regain their hold on Burma, the British send a special forces unit - the Chindits - deep behind Japanese lines. Their mission is to attack the enemy wherever they find him. What awaits them is a nightmare equal to anything the Second World War can deliver.

Colonel Keith Crosby and Doctor Alistair Whitamore have old scores to settle, being veterans of the long retreat through Burma two years before. But neither the jungle nor the foe have gotten any less savage, and when the shooting starts and the Japanese descend on the smaller British force in their midst, every man will be tested to his limit.

Writer Garth Ennis (The Boys, Preacher, DREAMING EAGLES) and artist PJ Holden (The Stringbags, World of Tanks, Judge Dredd) present a tale of hellish jungle warfare, as apparently civilized human beings descend into an apocalyptic heart of darkness.

This volume collects the entire Prestige Format series, issues #1-4.

  • This is a collection of something I haven't been reading, and I wish I had. Garth Ennis writes the best war stories I've ever read.

STORYBOARDING FOR WIM WENDERS HC

Story/Art: Stephane Lemardele | Humanoids | $29.99

In 2014, storyboard artist Stéphane Lemardelé began work with legendary filmmaker Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas; Wings of Desire) on his newest project, the emotional Every Thing Will Be Fine. The opening scenes Stéphane worked on would become some of the most renowned of the film, but it was the relationship he built with Wenders that would truly change him.

Through this graphic novel memoir, Stéphane captures not only the production of this film but moments of artistic reflection from Wim himself as he ponders the trajectory of his career and evolution as an artist, and the use of film as a tool to examine our own humanity.

This book is a rare peek behind the curtain for all fans of cinema, featuring actual storyboards from the production.

WE LIVE VOL 1 HC

WE'RE ALL JUST FINE HC

Ana Penyas | Fantagraphics | 112 pages | $24.99

This heartfelt graphic biography is a tribute to the artist’s grandmothers and a generation of women who quietly soldiered through more than 40 years of Fascist rule in Spain.

Artist Ana Penyas’s grandmothers Maruja and Herminia live alone in their respective Spanish towns, largely neglected by their children and relatives, who never visit. But when Ana comes to see them, she realizes that these women, whose day-to-day existences now seem mundane, experienced firsthand an incredibly tumultuous and fascinating period of Spanish history.

In We’re All Just Fine, Penyas weaves the memories of her grandmothers to craft a narrative quilt that pieces together what it was like for women to assimilate to Spain’s dramatic political and cultural shifts in the late 1970s and ’80s. The sudden transition from the authoritarian, repressive Franco regime to lively and liberating democracy was at once incredibly freeing but also destabilizing for women used to their traditional roles as dutiful housewives. Through this intimate lens into her grandmothers’ daily struggle — of their silence, the small acts of rebellion, and great gestures of resilience — Penyas gives voice to an entire generation of “invisible'' women whose stories have rarely been told. Combining collage and rough-hewn pencil drawings, and mixing past and present, Penyas offers a decidedly feminist tribute to the forgotten lives and legacies of her grandmothers.

"In this moving work, Penyas gives voice to an entire forgotten generation in Spain." — El Diario

"A heartfelt tribute to the two grandmothers who helped the author become who she is now." — Down Under Literature

"Penyas is an illustrator with a strong commitment to feminism and historical memory." — El Pais

"Ana Penyas' graphic novel pays homage to the women who grew up in the Franco regime." — El Mundo

  • I don't think I've read any of Way's work on DP

I read the first issue and didn't like it.

That sure is a lot of people who can't say their names.

I think the word "Shazamily" is enough to keep me away from this one.

Making the future Ghost Rider Frank Castle raises the issue of why the current Ghost Rider isn't Frank Castle.

Because Marvel wants both a Punisher and a Ghost Rider.

That seems pretty judge-y of Mr. Christ.

Not to mention wholly out of character. Have these people ever read the New Testament?

  • I read the first issue and didn't like it.

Is this the one where Danny the Street becomes Danny the Ambulance? If so, I may have read the first issue also. I don't remember an opinion other than general confusion.

I think the word "Shazamily" is enough to keep me away from this one.

I hear they're going to start calling the Billy Batson character "The Captain." That makes me think of Steve Rogers in his black suit.

I'm all for straightening out what to call the artist formerly known as Captain Marvel, but I still stand by my original suggestion: Captain Thunder. Plus Captain Thunder Jr., Ms. Thunder (Thunder Lass?), etc. That would straighten out the "can't say their name" bit, plus there's a bit of history there. (Captain Marvel was originally going to be called Captain Thunder, but the name was changed before Whiz #2.) There was also a Captain Thunder briefly in Action Comics, I want to say in the early '70s.

None of these people should be called Shazam. It's a name, not a title, and it belongs to the old wizard, who had it for a very long time. When somebody mentions "Shazam," you ought to know who they're talking about, and not have to say "which one?"

And, for my money, the whole kit and kaboodle should be returned to Earth-6, where the Big Red Cheese isn't redundant. Make the stories all ages, and wall it off from the too-serious DCU. And if it doesn't sell, leave the concept alone in comics and just make money on TV and in movies.

But that's just one opinionated guy's opinion.

Not to mention wholly out of character. Have these people ever read the New Testament?

Don't get me started. Many of today's prominent "Christians" seem to cast Jesus as a two-fisted culture warrior, instead of the guy who famously advised turning the other cheek.

  • Is this the one where Danny the Street becomes Danny the Ambulance?

I really couldn't tell you. All I remember is that I didn't like it.

I still stand by my original suggestion: Captain Thunder.

I like Captain Thunder, too, but Image already has this character:

  • Argh! If I'd known a decade ago this was coming, I wouldn't have bought the entire series in deluxe HC!

And there will be another one, slightly different, in 5 years!

A serial killer targeting affluent males? That's, like, the opposite of the real world. I suppose the killer will turn out to be a truck-stop hooker because, you know, Opposite Day.

Aileen Wuornos had half of that down.

This is a collection of something I haven't been reading, and I wish I had. Garth Ennis writes the best war stories I've ever read.

I also missed this, but I am getting another war comic by Ennis coming out from Rebellion. Battle Action, I think?

  • Coming out July 5, according to Diamond.
