  • I'm back in Collinwood, trying to reacquaintm myself with the old gang. I've seen through episode 1093... and not a heck of a lot happens in these episodes. Julia tries and fails to follow Maggie as she's summoned by her vampire master (I suspect Roxanne). Sebastian shows up, and Maggie sends him away. Barnabas tries to concentrate to contact the other vampire, but Julia interrupts him.

Meanwhile, the kids keep getting summoned back into the playroom, and are perhaps going to be pulled into the dollhouse. Carolyn's being drawn there, too, even though she doesn't think the room really exists. But at least the carousel has given her a new earworm.

I'm sorry to say that we didn't get to The Last Drop during our days in Edinburgh. We did, however, have a drink at The Conan Doyle, a pub down the street from our hotel celebrating Sherlock Holmes's creator. AND, I crossed paths with Bradley Walsh, who played the companion Graeme on Doctor Who! (At least, I think it was him; we were outside a rugby stadium, and he gave me a look like "I know you recognize me, but let's leave it at that, eh?"

I'm glad you're back! As you've noticed, I decided to scratch my daily "Dark Shadows" itch by starting a new discussion of Dark Shadows comics (at the rate of one post per day). I have covered Dark Shadows: Year One and am currently in the middle of the Gold Key series. After that, I plan to move on to the newspaper comic strip. (The conceit is I'm trying to pretend they are all part of the same continuity.) So far it's been mostly summaries and links to Dark Shadows Every Day blogs, but eventually I will move on to the Dynamite series. I tried to gin up a little interest among the board's general populace, but I'm getting only about two views per day. Back to the TV show, Tracy and I are waiting for you in the year 1840. I have always thought of the 1995/1970/1840 sequence as the show's "last hurrah," but Danny Horn has been poking some pretty serious holes in it in his "Dark Shadows Every Day" posts. In your next epsiode (1094), another "clue" comes to pass...

  • I've seen up through episode 1095 now. The big event is that Carolyn has been possessed (at least partially) by Letitia, and has sung a song (Pansy Faye's song!) to please Gerard. This is a big deal because Carolyn singing a song is one of the omens of the Collinspocalypse. Barnabas and Julia have intensified their investigations in that regard. Meanwhile, David and Hallie try to draw Barnabas into the playroom by putting a handmade doll of him in the dollhouse -- but when they return, it's rejected the doll. Eventually, the grownups make a plan to bring the kids to Professor Stokes's house, but David is drawn outside by a mysterious force (probably Gerard).

  • In 1096 you will learn the secret of the real "Rose Cottage"!

  • I made it to episode 1096 after I posted last night. Hallie and David are lured into another secret mansion on the Collinwood grounds -- Rose Cottage! Daphne and Gerard bring them there, and put them in chairs like the room in the dollhouse. The ghosts of Ted and Carrie appear, and David and Hallie say goodbye to themselves!

Ideally, if I can get to the end of the 1970 storyline by the end of March, I'll still be on track to wrap up the show by the end of the year.

  • Hallie and David are lured into another secret mansion on the Collinwood grounds...

This reminds me of the paperback book series by Dan "Marilyn" Ross. Every one of them, it seems, was partially set at one previously unknown building on the Collins estate or another, including, in one of them, an abandoned chapel. (More details about Rose Cottage coming up in 1101.)

  • I've seen through episode 1101 last night... which means it'll take a miracle for me to wrap up the 1970s by the end of the month. But here's what's been happening:

The kids have gone to the Rose Cottage and been possessed by the Dead Kids. Carolyn has also been possessed by Letitia. Daphne is now back among the living (and speaking!), and as of episode 1101, is wearing contemporary clothes! Good for her, I say! She loves Quentin, and has decided she doesn't want Gerard around, so she instead of doing the ritual with the Dead Kids, she sends them off the Windcliffe, where Julia wants them to go, since they're possessed.

In a cool move, Gerard disappears from Rose Cottage, appears in the playroom, and treats the dollhouse like a voodoo doll, lighting part of it on fire, which means the room Daphne is dozing in catches on fire. He's boarded up the winds and is holding his finger against the door, so she can't escape, until Carolyn/Letitia comes in and calls him out, and he has to stop.

Carolyn, on the other hand, was SUPPOSED to be watching Maggie, who's under the thrall of Secret Vampire, and she nearly leaves to house to follow the wolf's call, until Willie stops her. (Yay! Willie's back!)

Later, Julia dozes in a chair in Maggie's room, exposing her neck. Secret Vampire sneaks in, and Maggie goes to them. We'll probably see who Secret Vampire is next episode!!

  • Well, let's see...

I think four of the six "clues" have come to pass by this point. That "ritual with the Dead Kids" you mentioned is more of a ceremony than a seance so it doesn't get added to my list. Don't get too used to Willie; his final epsiode is coming up sooner than you think. 1101 is the last appearance of Mrs Johnson (unless you count the 1995 "flashforward"), and it is the last appearance of Clarice Blackburn in the series. 1101 also provides some trivia regarding Rose Cottage: it is the Magruder House, it is within walking distance of Collinwood, and it's on Cumberland Rd., 15 minutes outside Collinsport.

  • One thing I wanted to mention that's been unusual in the past few episodes -- there's what seems to be a renewed acknowledgment of the show's past. A few episodes ago, Barnabas was quizzing the possessed kids, and he asked David (well, Tad) the name of his governness before Maggie. Later, the kids bring Daphne some clothes Vicki had left behind. Just hearing her mentioned after several years of her being gone was kind of astonishing.

Similarly, Julia was trying to get David (well, Tad) to go to Windcliff, and says he'd actually been there before, about a year ago. I guess this was done to emphasize that it wasn't David anymore, but it was also a unusual callback to a previous, discarded plotline. That's cool!
