DC Finest line

A while back, DC announced a new line of reprints, called DC Finest, that packages about 500 pages of comics from various eras into a $40 softcover. From all appearances, it looks to be an attempt to mimic Marvel's successful Epic Collections line, in which complete runs of their books are reprinted in similar paperbacks, but often out of order. So you might get Fantastic Four volume 3 (The Coming of Galactus) before volume 1 (the early stuff), but the volumes have all been mapped out, and gaps get filled in as time goes on.

DC announced a bunch of collections, ranging from the Golden Age (All-Star Comics, Superman) to the 2000s (Wonder Woman), with plenty in between. In October's solicitations, they've finally nailed down the contents for most of the announced books. Here's what's been announced so far.

  • JSA: I've got the archives so I'll pass on the DCF.

WONDER WOMAN: I have The Legend of Wonder Woman #1-4 and the last four issues of the main series leading into Crisis but that's it. I'm in for this one.

    GORILLA WORLDKIo0KeA.gif

  • Though I'm curious about the Wonder Woman volume, from what I can recall, the series didn't end on a high note.

I'll get the second All-Star volume. I have the Archives too but you have to encourage more Golden Age volumes.

    Definitely getting Gorilla World!

  • Though I'm curious about the Wonder Woman volume, from what I can recall, the series didn't end on a high note.

I disagree. [SPOILER] "The skies above are clear now... as if a passing storm had paused, retreating for a time before gathering its forces anew. And the day is hushed, save for one rich voice, echoing with depths of wisdom and power unimaginable by mortal man... "

    scan0023.jpg

    Wonder-Woman-329-Cropped.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1.5

"Our two lives have been entwined by fate since before the world was born. Whatever happens... now or in the future... we'll be together till the end of time."

    [END SPOILER]

I'll get the second All-Star volume. I have the Archives too but you have to encourage more Golden Age volumes.

I don't need to be lectured by you "to encourage more Golden Age volumes."

    (Just sayin'.)

    • I'm sorry but the wedding of Diana to Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman #329 is just as bittersweet as the reunion of Barry and Iris Allen in The Flash #350. They're supposed to be happy endings but they were momentary joy before the actual ending of two of DC's oldest titles.

The Earth-Two WW and Steve got a better sendoff as condescending as it was, being consigned to a forgotten corner of an Olympian suburb.

And did the Earth-One Steve get to mourn his Diana? Or did he just fade away?

  • I added some art to Rob's post (and took out what was an ad from his original source that didn't translate to my CMS -- it looked like a big block of white space).

DC FINEST: WONDER WOMAN: THE LEGEND OF WONDER WOMAN
I have all the Wonder Woman stories in comic book form, and I have to say the series was pretty weak there toward the end .It was drawn by Don Heck, who was also close to the end (he died 10 years later). I bought Wonder Woman in those days out of a sense of obligation, rather than enjoyment. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying this; in fact, the reverse is true. It's history, just as Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? is history, and should be celebrated. Just don't expect Watchmen.

The Trina Robbins miniseries was published to maintain the rights to Wonder Woman, bridging Wonder Woman Vol. 1 and George Perez's Wonder Woman Vol. 2. According to everything I've read on the subject, William Moulton Marston's contract stipulated that DC Comics had to publishe Wonder Woman continually, or the rights would revert to his estate. There is word that the contract has since been renegotiated, but some say that's not so. At any rate, it was true in 1986-87. For all that it was essentially an editorial mandate rather than a story that needed to be told, Robbins did a good job of channeling the early spirit of the strip.

DC FINEST: JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA: THE PLUNDER OF THE PSYCHO-PIRATE
I also have all the Justice Society stories in Archives form, and had intended to skip this volume as I had the last. But as has been pointed out here, those Archives are now 25 years old. When did that happen? At any rate, they're now pretty yellow and I'd be concerned about the binding if I cracked one open. So that raises the issue of buying these cheap (ish) paperbacks. OTOH, the Archives had fascinating forewords (usually by Roy Thomas), whereas the TPBs do not. I may remain satisfied with what I have.

DC FINEST: SCIENCE FICTION: THE GORILLA WORLD
    Oh, yeah, I'm in.

I expect more Morrison trades soon!
