The Source has highlights, and ICV2 has more of the story.

I'm glad they'll be following up this survey with more in the future. I'll be good to get some more data points and watch demographic trends, as well as print vs digital trends.

  • Rood told ICv2 that the redemption of the digital codes in DC’s digital combo packs has been “astonishingly low,” a fact he attributed to the purchasers of those books being primarily interested in collecting a different edition of the material they like.

    Some fanboys I'll never understand...

    Thanks for the links Rob.

  • It kinda makes me sad, too, that our board has become a site of just old dudes.  OK, Jason, you're not old...but, man...remember when there were female posters here?

  • Once upon a time, yeah... :(

Whoah! Sexism and ageism in a heady combination!

  • I know...I actually hate old, white men...and I'm becoming one.  :)

  • I was actually in my LCS today and I counted at least three ladies in the store. I tried to take note of what they were picking up without being a creeper. They were mainly picking up Vertigo titles.

What amazed me mainly is how busy it was for a Sunday afternoon! I guess I hadn't been in on a Sunday in a little while.

  • Doc, don't be afraid...embrace your inner geezer. ;)

I don't go to the comic shop much anymore (being out of work will do that), but there are hardly any women there when I would visit.  Maybe they knew I was coming...

I agree with Mark S. that DC is trying.  But the majority of the titles I've read in the New 52 are written toward that 18-34 male demographic..  More effort needs to be made, and I think taking some of George P's comments into consideration would be a good start.

On a brief tangent, since George mentioned Power Girl...I think the new costume is a step in the right direction.  The original was good for its time, but it's too much of a sticking point with some to keep the window.

  • And then the solicits for May come out and Superman's villain is The Masochist...a woman who wants to be beaten up...um...

  • Equally, I think, if not MORE troublesome was the fact that this relaunch -- which was supposed to bust DC out of the comic ghetto -- only attracted a handful of new readers (5% of respondents) and even fewer kids (under 18s = 2%).

So basically, the audience for the New 52 is... the same audience as the Old 52.

I mean, yes, they sold more comics -- but only to people who were ALREADY buying their comics.

Let's face it, DC is in the business of selling superhero comics, which are -- almost by definition -- adolescent male power fantasies, so a whole bunch of new female readers was always sort of a longshot.

But to fail so completely to attract what should be their core audience -- adolescent males -- strikes me as a pretty profound failure.

  • Wow, that brings back memories! I remember when the Silver Age Masochist fist debuted back in the October 1958 issue of Action Comics. She came to Metropolis because she knew Superman could deliver the hardest spankings, but hilarity ensures when Superman spends the entire story cleverly avoiding her. *Sigh* Those were the days!
