DC'S AUGUST SOLICITATIONS PART II

It has occurred to me that discussing upcoming comics in Comics List and Comics Guide the week of isn't very useful these days, when most people order from their LCS or online two or three months in advance. With that in mind, I'm going to start running solicitations (which generally arrive before you have to order), and add whatever additional information I get to them as it comes in.

Both Marvel and DC are too large for a single post, so I'll have to break them apart. Go HERE for DC's August Solicitations Part I, including books tied to DC's "Absolute Power" event.

Reach out to your local comic book shop for preorder information and snag yourself one of these DC Super Powers variant covers!

DC’s new DC Super Powers variant covers coming in August evoke the classic Super Powers toy line and are packed with tons of Easter eggs and details. To re-create the look and feel of the original Kenner Super Powers packaging, original 1980s Super Powers product artist Alex Saviuk has returned to deliver the spot illustrations for each new variant cover. Saviuk was a character artist for the Kenner packaging from ’84 to ’86 and drew many of the minicomics that were included with each figure. The new DC Super Powers variant covers are designed and sculpted by one of the leading historians of the original Kenner Super Powers toy line and the cofounder of Raving Toy Maniac and Action Figure Insider, Jason Geyer, who is a toy designer himself.

I miss that outfit. I usually hate cutaway cowls that show the hair, because A) that would never work in the real world and B) showing the hair and the lower face means the mask isn't really disguising your identity. (Although in the early days Kid Flash would dye his hair super-fast. Pretty impractical, but kudos to John Broome for trying to work around the exposed-hair thing.) Anyway, I always thought Kid Flash in his yellow outfit with red trim running alongside Flash in his red outfit with yellow trim looked glitzy. And then the two of them running with Jay Garrick, whose outfit added the third primary color to the mix, looked extra cool.

This outfit will never get old to me, because I first saw it pre-adolesence and it made me feel funny inside.

Kenner was awarded the DC toy license in 1982 and developed a line of Super Powers toys that complemented DC’s long-running Super Friends Saturday morning cartoon show. The design of the Super Powers figures was based on the iconic 1982 DC Comics Style Guide, which featured the art of José Luis García-López, and additional art was created for the Kenner Super Powers product line by DC artist Alex Saviuk. The Kenner line of DC action figures was in stores from 1984 to 1986, comprising three waves of figures. Each figure had an “action mechanism” hidden inside that activated upon moving a figure’s arms or legs. Forty years later, the Super Powers collection has remained an in-demand line for collectors, with an extensive revival by McFarlane Toys in stores now!

DC’s original Super Powers comics are available on the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE digital subscription platform (DCUI). Following the unprecedented achievements of his Fourth World titles, Jack Kirby returned to the DC Universe in 1984 for two special miniseries celebrating Kenner’s new DC-themed Super Powers toy line. Together with such creative collaborators as Joey Cavalieri, Adrian Gonzales, and Paul Kupperberg, Kirby revisited all of DC’s greatest heroes and villains in the pages of Super Powers, and launched them through time and space into the kind of cosmic adventure only the King of Comics could deliver! For more information and a free trial, visit the DCUI website at www.dcuniverseinfinite.com. DCUI is not available in all countries and is not intended for children. Read more about the development of the Super Powers line of action figures in DC’s The Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 2!

*Disclaimer: All toys depicted on DC’s front and back variant covers are wholly digital and not for sale.

Too bad they're NOT real. I'd buy 'em. Note that the three original Teen Titans who made it to the New Teen Titans team in 1980 are included (Dick Grayson, Wally West, Donna Troy).

DC Launches a Brand-New WildStorm Adventure!

Eisner Award winner Tom King teams up with Jeff Spokes for a six-issue Jenny Sparks comic book miniseries!

“I’m not a superhero. I’m the @$#%@ who keeps them in line.” —Jenny Sparks

DC announced today a new six-issue DC Black Label comic book miniseries launching in August, Jenny Sparks. The Spirit of the 20th Century returns for the 21st in this action-packed new DC adventure by Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King (Wonder Woman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Penguin) and artist Jeff Spokes (WildC.A.T.s, Batman: The Brave and the Bold)!

“Jenny Sparks is an epic, thrilling, mind-blowing series in the tradition of Strange Adventures, Mister Miracle, and The Human Target,” said Tom King. “The Spirit of the 20th Century comes to the 21st to try to save five men and women taken hostage by an out-of-control and infinitely powered Captain Atom. Through this lens, we’ll explore the grip of Jenny’s time on our own; how, despite all our desperate prayers, the sins of our past refuse to die away. Featuring astonishing art by Jeff Spokes (seriously, it’s so damn good), Jenny Sparks seeks to set the bar in superhero comics, to show how our heroes can illuminate and define our moment.”

But who is Jenny Sparks? Readers of DC’s WildStorm comics will know that Jenny has always worked outside of the Justice League establishment to find anomalies in the superhero community, is subtle enough to dig into the lies of the most powerful people on the planet, and is strong enough to fight back when these fallen heroes discover who’s digging. She can, if only for a moment, light up the darkest nights. In DC’s new Jenny Sparks, Jenny is the Spirit of the 20th Century, resurrected for the 21st.

Kicking off the action in Jenny Sparks #1, what could four strangers have to do with the fate of the world? Find out as Captain Atom goes rogue, threatening to destroy the planet he once swore to protect. It may take the most unconventional hero of them all to stop him…Jenny Sparks, the one woman tasked with keeping all the heroes in line, no matter the cost. With a snap of her fingers, she’s entered the fray and won’t quit until the job is done!

12545425261?profile=RESIZE_400xJenny Sparks #1 main cover by Jeff Spokes

Of all the WildStorm characters, Jenny Sparks was probably my favorite. Not only was she a delightfully foul-mouthed, chain-smoking anti-hero, but the whole idea of "Century Babies" was, I thought, really clever. And, of course, electricity would define the 20th century. Oil was probably as important, but it was electricity that formed a demarcation line between what came before and what came after. The only question I had was why she was British, when the 20th Century was definitely American. I'd think the 19th Century Baby would be British, and probably be called Jenny Steam or Jenny Empire.

The smash-hit series returns! It’s the dead of winter, and any hope for a fragile truce between the Green Arrow-led human heroes and vampire queen Barbara Gordon’s army has been dashed by Damian Wayne and his guerrilla fighters. He’s the only one fighting back against the bloodthirsty hordes, leaving Green Arrow with a choice: Does he stand and fight or sacrifice the boy in the name of peace?

Still waiting for a complete HC of the first vampire story. (As far as I know, it only exists in HC as two books of six issues each.) Now there have been so many miniseries that it's probably wiser to wait for an omnibus.

P.S. That is an awesome vampire Wonder Woman cover.

When a violent and highly illegal energy drink-sponsored hunting operation threatens the lives of wildlife and the residents of Gotham City alike, the only ones fit to save the day are the criminal trio of Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. Back together again for the first time in years. Sometimes the only way to fight bad is with even worse! With special appearances by White Rabbit, Punchline, and introducing the himbo cowboy henchmen sensation soon to be sweeping the nation known as “The Nasty Boys!” Get your chaps, spurs, and hats out cause it’s hunting season! By the end of story you’ll be covered in guts, goo, and grit! Featuring the talents of Leah Williams, Matteo Lolli, Daniel Hillyard, and more! If you’re not chanting “Hot tubs and headshots and hotties, oh my!” by the end of this four-week-long series, you’re doing it wrong!

I like this idea, except for the presence of Punchline, a derivative, pointless, uninteresting character.

This cover raises more questions than it answers. Did Superman purposefully cut out an "S" pattern from cardboard or sometning and put it on his chest while he laid out in the sun? Why? And is his skin even susceptible to ultra violet rays in such a way? Wouldn't his body naturally absorb the solar radiation? Dumb idea.

ZERO HOUR 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1

Zero Hour was one of my favorite crossover series. I'll very likely be buying this special when it comes out.

ALL NEW COLLECTORS' EDITION #56 FACSIMILE EDITION SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI - I got this as a Treasury edition, and skipped the oversize HC. Now I kinda want it. I have no idea what size this will be.

It says "facsimilie edition" so I assume it will be softcover, like that "Batman/Ra's AL  ghul" one that shipped recently. (Yes, the price point is the same.)

Also, has Superman really been wearing his trunks outside his tights for all these years?

  • This Power Girl action figure has an inaccurate costume deesign.

I interpreted that cover as the sun shining through the trees and where it gets through coincidentally forming an "S" on Superman's chest. You can see more sun-dappling on his left arm and thigh, that don't form the shape of anything (unless you count fronds).

This Power Girl action figure has an inaccurate costume design.

They're pulling these "action figures" from the past, and it's what Power Girl wore in the '80s. I'm not going to ask what part you think is inaccurate, as I fear the answer.

    • Superman's skin does not tan.

And it's not Power Girl's costume that's wrong, it was the entire "Granddaughter of Arion" thing! I didn't accept it then despite the need to change PG's origin!

The cover reminded me of the first episode and the ads for the Smallville show. Clark was tied up with a large red S painted on his bare chest. I don’t remember the in-story explanation.

    You know the answer.
