It looks like DC Comics are using the Omnibus format as their current way to collect classic material in chronological order.  In the past, there have been the Archives series (hardcover, full color), the Showcase Presents series (softcover, black and white, usually twice the page count of an Archive), and the Chronicles series (softcover, full color, smaller page count than an Archive).  In the past few years, all of these lines have been quietly shuttered, and now DC is releasing Omnibus collections in both hardcover and softcover formats.

As you would expect, the Omnibus hardcovers are huge.  Two Silver Age volumes collected the first 76 issues of JLA (along with Brave and Bold 28-30 and Mystery in Space 75), for example.  Earlier this year, DC released JLA: The Bronze Age Omnibus Volume 1, collecting JLA # 77-113.  That's almost half of the original series collected in this way, which for a fan like me is great news.  The JLA Archives had 10 volumes, collected the first 93 issues, and the first volume and last volume were released twenty-two years apart.  The first JLA Omnibus came out in 2014.

DC is also releasing these collections in trade paperbacks with a smaller page count than the hardcovers.  The great thing is that these TPBs collect more issues than the Archives did!  The material collected in the first JLA Silver Age Omnibus has all been released in 3 TPBs.

I have the first JLA Silver Age TPB, and I loved it!  I also have the first JLA Showcase Presents, but I find that without color, I just don't enjoy the stories as much as I could.  Actually, I find I enjoy most Silver Age comics more in color versus reading them in Showcase Presents and Essential Marvel.

I wonder how many of the rest of you are buying and reading these Omnibus collections, and what you think of the format.

In 1919, identical twin brothers Michael and Lance Gallant were born in New York City – both possessed T-shaped birthmarks on their left wrists. The boys were very close growing up. During the Second World War, Michael enlisted in the Air Force as a pilot. Unfortunately, on their 23rd birthday, Michael died when his hanger exploded and his brother, Lance, who saw the tragedy, grabbed Michael from the flames, only to have him die in his arms. Lance wanted vengeance!

I read some of these while doing some research, and despite its really weird premise, it was a pretty straightforward Golden Age superhero strip. It's weird because the live brother starts dating the dead brother's girlfriend, and the dead brother is always invisibly around. Which means he's watching when the live brother is having sex with his former girlfriend, or going to the bathroom, or whatever. And the dead brother's constant presence isn't used to its full capacity to keep the live brother out of jeopardy. So it's weird that it isn't weird. Oh, Golden Age, you never change.

DC had a "Triumph" in the '80s. Different guy.

    12494120694?profile=RESIZE_400x

Lance Lewis – Space Detective – is a scientific genius and using his ray guns, jet pack and a whole host of other high-tec gadgets fights interplanetary aliens and space menaces with the aid of his gorgeous girlfriend, Marna - solving alien mysteries – such as the amoeba men or Martians.

I don't remember this guy specifically, but the phrase "Space Detective" seems familiar. Maybe PS has already reprinted some. Or maybe DC or somebody else had a "Space Detective." Not really surprising that people in the '40s would put those two words together.

    12494121687?profile=RESIZE_400x

I don't know anything about this guy. Roy Thomas introduced a Black character with this name in All-Star Squadron, who had Absorbing Man abilities in the '40s.

    12494122663?profile=RESIZE_400x

I was wondering when they'd get around to this guy!

    12494123072?profile=RESIZE_400x

Another book I know nothing about.

    12494123253?profile=RESIZE_400x

    And yet another mystery!

    12494123268?profile=RESIZE_400x

This book replaced Military Comics (keeping the numbering) after the war ended. The contents, including Blackhawk, didn't change. I don't think PS has already reprinted the entire run of Military Comics yet, even though it was a quarterly. But the Blackhawk book proper began about the same time as Modern Comics, and its early issues were chock full of Reed Crandall goodness, so I'm hopeful the same will be true here.

  • AMAZING MAN: The lead stories from  Amazing Man #5-9 were reprinted by Fantagraphics in Amazing Mysteries - The Bill Everett Archives Vol. 1 in 2011. It's not Everett's best work but, having just finished his run on Venus, I'm looking forward to reintroducing myself to this character. It was solicited for release June 26, but PS Artbooks never ship on time.

DAREDEVIL: This is interesting. Dardevil's first eight appearances (from Silver Streak Comics #6-13) were reprinted by Dark Horse in Silver Streak Archives Vols. 1-2 in 2012, and the first four issues of Daredevil were reprinted in The Original Daredevil Archives Vol. 1 in 2013. Daredevil also appeared in Silver Streak Comics #14-21 (which became Crime Does Not Pay with #22), but those stories have never been reprinted. Judging from the cover posted above, the PS Art volume collects all of the Daredevil stories from Silver Streak Comics #6-21, plus Daredevil #1. I wasn't going to buy this volume because it contains so much duplication with the Dark Horse volumes, but I may have to for the unreprinted stories from Silver Streak Comics #14-21. I haven't seen this series solicited yet, but judging from the publication dates listed on the PS Artbooks cover, their volume will comprise Daredevil stories only.

(Incidentally, Dark Horse reprinted Crime Does Not Pay #22-61 in ten volumes, but the title lasted though #147 in 1955, laid low by Frederic Wertham's anti-comics crusade.)

I'm happy that PS Artbooks has finally gotten around to reprinting some early super-hero material, but I wish they would have done it sooner. I'm currently considering not adding any new collections because I'm so far behind reading PS Artbooks that I will never catch up, and (say it with me now), "Buying new comics and not reading them is stupid."

  • AMAZING MAN: The lead stories from Amazing Man #5-9 were reprinted by Fantagraphics in Amazing Mysteries - The Bill Everett Archives Vol. 1 in 2011.

I have that book and read those stories, and remember nothing about them. But like you, I’m looking forward to re-acquainting myself with this character.

PS Artbooks never ship on time.

    The very definition of understatement.

Daredevil's first eight appearances (from Silver Streak Comics #6-13) were reprinted by Dark Horse in Silver Streak Archives Vols. 1-2 in 2012, and the first four issues of Daredevil were reprinted in The Original Daredevil Archives Vol. 1 in 2013.

I have those books as well, but am looking forward to a comprehensive collection that actually reaches the end.

    See above!

Incidentally, Dark Horse reprinted Crime Does Not Pay #22-61 in ten volumes, but the title lasted though #147 in 1955, laid low by Frederic Wertham's anti-comics crusade.

I have those as well. I may never get to read CDNP #62-147.

I'm happy that PS Artbooks has finally gotten around to reprinting some early superhero material, but I wish they would have done it sooner. I'm currently considering not adding any new collections because I'm so far behind reading PS Artbooks that I will never catch up, and (say it with me now), "Buying new comics and not reading them is stupid."

I also fell behind on PS, mainly because PS stopped shipping for more than a year, then suddenly caught up. I was getting boxes with a dozen books in them—too many to read before the next box of a dozen shipped. Then suddenly I was a couple of dozen books behind, and stayed that way.

But I’m making a concerted effort to clear ALL books I haven’t read yet, and am getting there. I have no problem starting new series.

And yes, finally, early superhero work from publishers not named Archie, DC or Marvel. (Although I want those, too!)

can’t help it that things don’t always go as planned! And when the Teen
Titans roll into town chasing after their infamous nemesis, Deathstroke,
Ashley just knows this is her chance to prove that Primer has what it
    takes to join the team.

her homework—typical Dad and Yuka (umm…Mom) stuff! And best friend,
Luke keeps acting so weird every time her Titan dream gets brought up…
but Ashley has it all figured out. If only they would just see that she can
do this! The new girl at her school, Violette, thinks Primer is the best—
so why doesn’t everyone else get it, too?

Kori Anders’s summer job at a ritzy Santa Monica beach club is fun, but
she doesn’t care about keeping up with the current trends, and she’s not
interested in rushing around to all the parties. She’d rather explore her
inexplicable draw to the stars or hang out with her new friend, Victor Stone.
Her sister, Kira, on the other hand, is the most popular girl around. With
the hottest clothes, an even hotter boyfriend (the Tate Fairweather), and a
take-no-prisoners attitude, she’s Kori’s opposite in every way. Their summer
heats up when Tate’s uncle asks the girls to participate in an EDS study his
pharmaceutical company is running. During treatment, Kori develops some
strange powers she never had before…and she might not be the only one.
Can Kori persuade her sister to trust her before it’s too late? And when a
carload of teens with their own powers comes looking for her to warn her
about a creepy stalker, she’ll learn that trust is a two-way street!

Garcia has already written at least three other Teen Titans OGNs for teen/young adult, starring Beast Boy and Raven. I thought they were cute, but nothing I would go out of my way to read. I might feel differently if I was a teen/YA myself.

The Catwoman we know has vanished. Selina Kyle is gone. She’s no longer
Gotham’s fugitive—she’s its ghost. After the events of the Gotham War, Selina
leaves the city a changed woman. The plan? Nine deadly missions, each potentially
more lethal than the last—a feat only possible for a cat with nine lives.
Written by Tini Howard and illustrated by Stefano Raffaele, Carmine Di
Giandomenico, and Ivan Shavrin, Catwoman: Vol. 4: Nine Lives is a gritty, fast-paced
whirlwind that will leave you gasping for breath! Collects Catwoman #59-68.

I stopped reading Catwoman back when Brubaker left. The writers since then have gone into such weird contortions to prevent Bruce and Selina from getting married that it's killed my joy. I shouldn't single Catwoman out for that; the same has been done in many adventure strips over the decades. (Are you reading this, Peter Parker?) And I know I don't speak for everybody. Some people are just discovering the "will they or won't they" of the Bruce/Selina relationship and having fun, and more power to 'em.

Attention, nerds! It’s me, Harley Quinn. I’ve got a brand-new collection coming your way from my
incredible series, Harley Quinn (that’s easy to remember!) I know you bought those issues already,
but since they’re bagged and slabbed, y’all need this edition to find out what’s happened to me! I was
minding my own business, having a prank war with Two-Face, when some Lady Quark popped up and
told me I was threatening reality everywhere. What?
Anyway, Tini Howard (Catwoman) wrote up the details, and Sweeney Boo (Crush & Lobo) and Hayden
Sherman (Batman/Superman: World’s Finest) drew them up really pretty with guests like Zatanna, Captain
Carrot, and of course, HIM (Batman, silly. Who else?), all helping me try to keep reality together. I
just want to leave the Multiverse alone, do my community service, and adore my gal, Poison Ivy. And I’ll
do ANYTHING to protect my Earth. Got it? Collects Harley Quinn #28-32 and Knight Terrors: Harley Quinn #1-2.

Kinda got Harley Fatigue. I still watch the cartoon, tho!

around? Because everyone’s got music fever!
Composed by Jarrett Williams (Titans: Beast World Tour: Central City, Rick and Morty) and Daniele Di
Niculo (Nightwing, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Speed Force pits Wallace and Avery against fame,

All that stands against them is the Batman, the last line of defense between the

Meet Skinner Sweet, the first American vampire in recorded history. Stronger, faster,
and fiercer than your average vampire, Skinner is unaffected by sunlight and was already

I loved Snyder's Unified Field Theory of all traditional monsters, and I loved Pearl, the co-star. But I couldn't stand Skinner Sweet, the other co-star and putative protagonist. YMMV.

    Tide #1-4, Aquaman #0-49, #1,000,000, Aquaman Annual #1-4, Tempest #1-4, and a story from
    Showcase ’96 #1—over 30 never-before-collected issues.

I love me some Peter David, but this run of Aquaman, I felt, tried too hard to re-invent the Sea King -- to the point where he wasn't Aquaman any more. Still, glad to see it back in print.

They had been fighting crime separately for years, but it wasn’t until the historic
Superman #76 in 1952 that Superman, the Man of Steel, finally teamed up with the
Caped Crusader himself, Batman. That story proved so popular that they became
the main feature in World’s Finest Comics, and thus, the greatest friendship in
comics was born. Collects the classic story of their first meeting from Superman #76
    and their team-ups from World’s Finest #71-116.

Hot diggety! I'm sure most or all is already in print somewhere, but it'll be great to have it as a series. AND if it continues we'll see a lot of unreprinted material. AND it will alleviate the SIlver Age Batman and Superman Omnibuses from having to include the WFC team-up stories (which were largely unrelated anyway).

In 1986, more than 40 years after debuting in All-Star Comics #8, Wonder Woman was
reshaped by the legendary George Pérez! She was met with such acclaim that Pérez’s
original commitment of six months was extended, and extended, until almost five
years had passed. Together with co-writer Len Wein and inker Bruce Patterson, Pérez
spearheaded Wonder Woman’s adventures to an unprecedented level of success. This
first volume collects Wonder Woman #1-14.

DC | Suicide Squad: Kill Arkham Asylum FAQ
DC.com - Welcome to the Official Site for DC. DC is home to the world's Greatest Super Heroes, including SUPERMAN, BATMAN, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN L…
  • BATMAN: THE CULT: THE DELUXE EDITION - I remember not being impressed when this came out, despite the Berni Wrightson art.

Ditto. IIRC, this was touted as Berni's "new" style.

ANIMAL MAN BY GRANT MORRISON AND CHAZ TRUOG COMPENDIUM - I wasn't nearly as impressed with Morrison's Animal Man run as many others were.

I did not start reading Animal unti #51 when Jamie Delano took over (not that I'm a big Jamie Delano fan; it just coincided with a bif Vertigo advertisting push). I was intrigued enough that I soon filled in all of the the backissues, which were plentiful and inexpensive at the time. I read it through then and once since. It struck me, the first half of the run in particular, as being very "Silver Age" in spirit. This entire run has been collected in omnobus (which I have and plan to reread again someday), so I don't see the advantage of the "compendium."

AQUAMAN BY PETER DAVID OMNIBUS - I love me some Peter David, but this run of Aquaman, I felt, tried too hard to re-invent the Sea King -- to the point where he wasn't Aquaman any more.

I feel pretty much the same. However, this is something I might consider, if only I had any remaining shelf space.

BATMAN & SUPERMAN WORLD’S FINEST: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS VOL. 1 (2024 EDITION) - Hot diggety!

Sorry to rain on your parade, Cap, but "2024 edition" means that this exact volume has already seen print. Not only that, but a second volume (2019) has already been released. For the record, the contents of v1 are already available in Archive editions; "new" material begins in v2; what we're waiting for is v3.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: THE GREAT DARKNESS SAGA - I think I have this in a couple of formats already.

Yep. DC has even gone one volume beyond this: The Curse. Every Legion comic from 1959 through 1984 (#313) has been released in hardcover, in one series or another. I posted a list somewhere on this board once (probably in 2021, when the last gap was filled).

THE FLASH BY MARK WAID OMNIBUS VOL. 2

I did not know about this! (Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen any of these solicitations yet.) Volume one of what they're calling the "William Messner-Loebs" Flash (which begins with #1 of the post-Crisis "Wally West" Flash) has been solicited for June 19 release.

THE JOKER: THE MAN WHO STOPPED LAUGHING: THE COMPLETE SERIES - I still have Joker Fatigue, and I don't know if I'll ever get better.

I have had "Joker Fatigue" since 1987. The last Joker product I bought was The Joker: Devil's Advocate in 1996. (Well, there was that "Three Jokers" thing, but I try not to think about that.)

Me three. The art was fine by me, but I couldn't swallow the story at all.

No wonder it looked so familiar. I have those very books on my shelf.

Every Legion comic from 1959 through 1984 (#313) has been released in hardcover, in one series or another.

I checked my bookshelf, and I don't seem to have The Great Darkness Saga in HC. I don't see on available online for sale at a reasonable price, and the new one omits issue #288-289, which is a deal-breaker. Well, it's not like I haven't read all these already. (I guess I didn't get The Curse, either.)

Me three. The art was fine by me, but I couldn't swallow the story at all.

It's a relief to see I'm not alone. I usually keep what I figure are unpopular opinions ("I don't like this book by Comics God Berni Wrightson") to myself, but apparently that wasn't necessary here.

  • Here are Marvel's latest announcement of upcoming collections. So many I have to separate it into two posts!

I see that MMW Thor has caught up with the Simonson collections. I see a stink-eye cover on Superior Spider-Man. I see "The End" and "Secret Wars" in collections ... again? I may hve those. What do you see?

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE MIGHTY THOR VOL. 23 HC

Written by WALTER SIMONSON with ALAN ZELENETZ
Penciled by WALTER SIMONSON with BOB BUDIANSKY & CHARLES VESS
    Cover by WALTER SIMONSON

Walter Simonson begins his character-redefining THOR run!

“DOOM!” With that iconic effect, Walter Simonson shattered all expectations. As both writer and artist, his THOR was nothing short of a revelation – one that has been held up next to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s as the greatest of all time. Simonson’s stories instantly establish cosmic stakes and a mastery of the series’ characters. As his epic unfolds, he introduces Beta Ray Bill – a hero so bold and true that he can lift Mjolnir – and Malekith, a villain so cunning that he could unleash the Casket of Ancient Winters…and worse! And so the Marvel Masterworks are very proud to begin their presentation of Walter Simonson’s MIGHTY THOR, painstakingly restored from his original art and matching the coloring of the original comics!
