It looks like DC Comics are using the Omnibus format as their current way to collect classic material in chronological order. In the past, there have been the Archives series (hardcover, full color), the Showcase Presents series (softcover, black and white, usually twice the page count of an Archive), and the Chronicles series (softcover, full color, smaller page count than an Archive). In the past few years, all of these lines have been quietly shuttered, and now DC is releasing Omnibus collections in both hardcover and softcover formats.
As you would expect, the Omnibus hardcovers are huge. Two Silver Age volumes collected the first 76 issues of JLA (along with Brave and Bold 28-30 and Mystery in Space 75), for example. Earlier this year, DC released JLA: The Bronze Age Omnibus Volume 1, collecting JLA # 77-113. That's almost half of the original series collected in this way, which for a fan like me is great news. The JLA Archives had 10 volumes, collected the first 93 issues, and the first volume and last volume were released twenty-two years apart. The first JLA Omnibus came out in 2014.
DC is also releasing these collections in trade paperbacks with a smaller page count than the hardcovers. The great thing is that these TPBs collect more issues than the Archives did! The material collected in the first JLA Silver Age Omnibus has all been released in 3 TPBs.
I have the first JLA Silver Age TPB, and I loved it! I also have the first JLA Showcase Presents, but I find that without color, I just don't enjoy the stories as much as I could. Actually, I find I enjoy most Silver Age comics more in color versus reading them in Showcase Presents and Essential Marvel.
I wonder how many of the rest of you are buying and reading these Omnibus collections, and what you think of the format.

The All In/Absolute books are what we've been talking about lately, and a collection isn't a bad idea for those who haven't been reading them and want to join the conversation. This one's a little skimpy, though. It's got the first few "All In" books and the Trinity, but it should also have the entirety of Absolute Power, the first three Absolute books, New Gods #1, and maybe one or two other essential "All In" books. Action and Detective, maybe? I don't know, I'd have to look it up. But I seem to remember tsome essential information appearing elsewhere than what is covered here. I guess this could do until there's an omnibus.

Some Legionnaires are fans of Tom King, and he's got a couple of collections in here, too. I've read all the Wonder Woman backups, but I haven't read Trinity: World's Finest Special #1, and don't know what's in there that I haven't read, if anything. But I can recommend this!

I think this is the story that plugged the hole between the end of the last era and the beginning of Mark Waid's weekly Action story about the Phantom Zone. I haven't read it, but I usually enjoy Bizarro stories, and usually enjoy Gail Simone stories, so maybe I'll pick it up.

Amanda Waller debuted in the Legends miniseries (included in this omnibus), but her story really began with John Ostrander's Suicide Squad. This was revelatory stuff in 1987, and is obviously now important DC Universe history. (However much of it has survived the various reboots.)

ARRGGH! I already have replica editions of Moon Girl #1-5 published by Canton Street Press... and they were pricey, believe me. I don't usually buy expensive replica editions, but I really wanted these. Not only did #5 feature EC's first horror story (as you mentioned), but the Moon is my wife's symbol. When I first told her about Earth-J, she said, "Then I live on Moon-T!" Canton Street Press started with #5, then went back and released #1-4, then stopped. These replica editions were $15 a pop, so I'm already into it for $75. But all eight issues plus "Moon Girl" stories from other EC titles, in hardcover, for $60? I am so there! I'll say it again: This is the Golden Age of Comics!
