Here he is in the old days

And here he is today.

  Talk about hitting the gym!

I think I prefer the old Despero, he was trying to conquer yes, but I wasn't afraid he'd eat Diana.  Something to be said for bad guy who doesn't have to show how bad he is.

  • Talk about hitting the gym!

    Obviously 'Roid Rage.

  • Seems to me that I've seen him return before... someplace around Giffen's Justice League or maybe Byrne's Superman... but he was quite muscular then also... but not this steroid-indulgent Hulk-ish brute!

  • Now that I think about it (SPOILER!)... in that earlier appearance, wasn't it resolved by somebody like Martian Manhunter or Dr. Fate.... revealing that Despero was only a small 4 inch figure that couldn't scare anyone, except for his psychic attack which imaged him as a hulking-muscular beast? (I recall the small figures at the surprise reveal at the end of the classic Star Trek episode, "Catspaw"... as a similar example!)

  • Yeah, Giffen's JLA had a bulked up Despero (although I think he was drawn by Adam Hughes at the time). From what I recall, he got bigger and fiercer during the Detroit JLA of all things, when he stepped into some sort of magic column of fire (the Flame of P'Tarr?* It's been a while) and stepped our much beefier, with his fin spun 90 degrees, mohawk-like.

*Wikipedia says Flame of Py'tar! Not bad for a book I haven't read for a few years!

  • Well he obviously didn't have time to go to the dentist!

  • Please tell me this wasn't Despero's first appearance in the New52.

If so, the shock value/interest will only hold for those readers familiar with JL comics from the 60's.  Those readers, if such there be, that wanted to get 'in on the ground floor' of the New52 as their introduction to superhero comics will be alienated by moves like this.  They will sense that pages like this are for other readers than themselves, and the circles continue to decrease.

It's depressing on all kinds of levels.  So the universe was rebooted so that the creators could pull the cheap trick of re-introducing all the old stuff as if it was something original.  It looks like they are depending on old continuity to do the work of storytelling.

    Oh dear!

  • This latest picture is from Justice League 19, 2013. Personally I still think that subtle Vincent Price style evil can be just as threatening as Slasher movie evil, but I have to admit that this Despero is dangerous looking.

  • Nho thass ol skool villians mus be baddas en kewl en haf eh faktor cuz baddas

  • At least in the old days he wore clothes. I gotta say naked villainy... Just not right.

  • As much as I loved this run of JLA--the writing and the art--what I notice most is doggone it I miss Bob Lappan's lettering!

    Hughes' Despero was also dangerous-looking:
