Heeeeyyyy... THAT's not my name!

As I unwrapped the Question Classic DC Figurine to put on display here in the store, it got me thinking.

What characters with "proper" super-hero (or villain, or whatever) get called by some other name in-story?

The Question was often referred to as "No-Face" back in his 1980's series.

The Mask was called "The Big-Head Killer" by the police in many of his series.

Are there any others out there?

  • In the Defenders, the Hulk always called Nighthawk "Bird-Nose."

In an early Amazing Spider-Man issue, Dr. Octopus once called him "Superman>"
  • The Thing never called Reed Mister Fantastic! It was always "Stretcho"!
  • The "one, true Green Lantern" is consitently referred to by his real name.
  • Almost everyone calls the Sub-Mariner "Namor" all the time. He can appear in a book for issues at a time without being referred to as the Sub-Mariner in anything but narration.

I've never read anyone refer to the Phantom Stranger as anything but "Stranger."

Who ever calls Guy Gardner "Green Lantern"? They say he's a Green Lantern, but they invariably call him "Guy."

I don't think I've ever read anyone say to Shade, "Hey! Changing Man! Come here!"

That's who I was referring to (tongue in cheek) when I said "the one, true Green Lantern." the only time I can think of when he was reffered to as "Green Lantern" (by anyone other than himself) was in the Legends limited series.
  • Probably only peripheral to your actual question, but I was thinking about this the other day: Nobody calls J. Jonah Jameson by his first name (John). What I was thinking about is that both JJJ's father and son are named John -- so conceivably, either one of them could also be a J. Jonah Jameson. We won't know until and unless we find out their middle names.
  • The Phantom often uses the name Mr. Walker (for the Ghost Who Walks).
  • Sivana used to call Captain Marvel the Big Red Cheese.

I've never been able to read the Phantom; I get bored way easily by it. Do people actually call him "The Phantom" in the comics, or just "The Ghost Who Walks?"

  • J'onn J'onzz is very seldom ever referred to as the "Martian Manhunter" anymore.
