I decided to read this series after I first read about it. This is Warren Ellis’ version, and he has gone straight to the source, the novels not the movies, for inspiration. He even makes a case for Bill Tanner being Bond’s best friend. If you don’t know who that is, maybe this series isn’t for you.

The British newspaper strips, collected by Titan Books, also used the novels as source material and are quite good.
Yes, I agree. The early ones were straight up adaptations, but the later ones told original stories.
How do those original stories stack up against the Fleming adaptions?
I have the complete run, but so far I've only read through the adaptations (not including Colonel Sun).
One of these days I'll get in the mood and make a reading project of it... picking up where I left off.

I bought the ones covering the adaptations of Fleming's books. If you do a reading project that will push me to actually read them. So far I've skimmed them. Hopefully you'll also go over the ones you've already read.
Oh, Richard…
One of the reasons I never seem to finish lengthy reading projects is, if I go awayfrom them unfinished then come back at a later date, I always tend to start over at the beginning again. Consequently, there are certain runs I’ve read the early instalments of dozens of times, but I’ve never finished! In 2008 I made a New Year’s Resolution to always return to a reading project where I left off. I’ve stuck to it ever since and have been able to finish Terry and the Pirates and Prince Valiant that way.
Regarding James Bond, I’ve read Fleming’s original 14 novels through at three separate times in my life, listened to most of them on audio books I got on clearance, and read the adaptations at least once. (The time I finished them was prior to 2008, and I backed up and read the early ones a second time.) I don’t think I will ever again re-read all 14 novels. If I’m ever in the mood, I’ll probably re-read the comic strips at that time because they are such faithful adaptations, but that time won’t be soon.
I need to get through the original strips first because I’m in violation of one of my prime tenants of comic book collecting: “Buying new comics and not reading them is stupid.”
More of the newspaper strip collections are out Nov. 25 -- and by "more" I mean "about five."
The entire series has already been released by Titan once; now they are in the process of re-releasing it in a different format.
