I'm thinking of getting a few of the Marvel Essentials. I'm leaning towards Marvel Team-up vol. 1 and Marvel two-in-one vol. 1. Or maybe two-in-one 1 & 2. What do you guys think? Is that too much team-ups? I'm looking for something light and fun and from the 70s or 80s.

  • I guess it depends on who you are a bigger fan of. I like Spider-man myself, so I would suggest Marvel Team-Up. Plus there are a few team-ups without Spider-man. Which I always found fun.
  • I think I'm going to get one Team-up and one Two-in-one.
  • Nova and Ms. Marvel fit the "light and fun from the '70s" definition. Nobody would mistake them for masterpieces, but they are light and often fun, scripted mainly by Marv Wolfman (Nova) and Chris Claremont (Ms. Marvel). Both available in Essentials form.
  • Neither is great, but neither is bad either.

Marvel Team-Up Vol.1 does not have Spider-Man exclusively in the team-ups, as frequently the Human Torch was the star, at least early on.  I think both titles improved in Vol. 2.

Ms. Marvel isn't bad.  I don't think Nova was that great.  You might want to look at Defenders vols. 2 and 3, lots of different characters going through that comic.

I reviewed a number of the Essentials here.  You may want to look through those.

  • Thanks, Randy and George and Travis. I went ahead and purchased Vol 1 of Team up and Two-in-one. I ordered off of Things from another world. They currently have a nick & dent sale. There were many vol. 1 of the essentials available. Or at least ones I was interested in. I could have gone for a second volume instead but I just prefer starting at vol. 1. I don't own any of the Marvel Essentials and they seem to be a good way to get caught up on everything I've missed. So there will be other Essentials in my future.
  • Nova was Marv Wolfman's attempt to recreate the magic of early Spider-Man, with a high school setting and a teenage nerd for a hero (and with an alliterate name: Richard Rider/Peter Parker). It didn't quite work, of course. It didn't help that Marv was out of touch with teens of the late '70s, of which I was one at the time. Teens in 1976-77 hanging out in a malt shop? Come on, Marv!

But many of the issues were entertaining in a lightweight, kid-oriented way. The issue where Nova visits the Marvel Bullpen is fun. I wouldn't spend big bucks (or small ones) to amass the back issues, but having the whole 25-issue run in one thick, cheap volume is a bargain.
