Am I the only one around here reading Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's Daredevil? This is amazing. Such a departure from the previous take on the character. I love his role in Foggy's life, and I love Foggy's role in Matt's life. I love it.

And as I said in the Silver Age thread mistakenly, man, that last panel in the last issue was such a heart-breaker.

  • I'm reading it too, but in trades -- so I'm quite a bit behind you.  I agree that it has been amazing so far.

  • I'm afraid that I've dropped it after the first ten issues or so... just after the Mole Man two-parter...it was just so original premise that I hung on for that long.

But, after hearing rave reviews again, I impulsively picked up the next 8 issues or so, and though I haven't read it carefully, I loved the issue where the female D.A. tried to bluff Matt into slipping up... and I liked a bit of the Latvaria adventure, especially the dramatic rescue. (Though I don't think I.M. should have used the name Matt when greeting him. DD would have been better. Stark should know better after years of secret identity problems on both sides.)

And then, there was a 3-parter with someone named Cyotee, or something, that just repulsed me.  I've glanced at it, but I don't like it at all.

Now, I'm arguing with my LCBS clerk whether I told him to start up the series again on my pull list (which I did, multiple times) or whether he remembers me dropping it, which I did, and now want to restart.  (I swear this place is operating on a shoe string profit margin these days!)

So, what is the point of this last set of 3 panels?  Is that a doctor's office?  Has Foggy just gotten some bad news? What issue is this from?

  • This is easily one of Marvel's best comics.

  • If you really want to be spoiled...

Yes, it's very bad news. Foggy appears to have cancer.  And I believe this is from the most recent issue, #23.

  • OK, I'm curious now.
Can Matt not detect cancer cells growing?

    What were the symptoms?

    Was this forshadowed?

  • I kind of dropped out of the series for a little while (can't believe we're on #23 already...), and popped my head back in about four issues ago, so as far as foreshadowing, I can't really speak to that. I know that Foggy and Matt had a little bit of a falling out not long ago, but they made amends. I also do know from the first few issues that Matt had been trying to get Foggy to live a more healthy life, less junk food, more exercise, etc.

"Can Matt not detect cancer cells growing?" C'mon ... nobody's hearing is THAT good.

"What were the symptoms?" We weren't shown any.

"Was this foreshadowed?" Somewhat, during the previous issues where Matt and Foggy were bickering rather than talking to each other.

The panels ahead of the ones shown above are pretty engaging, too. To add to the SPOILER -- as Matt and Foggy are waiting at the doctor's office, Matt tries to cheer Foggy up as he hears a rapid, nervous heartbeat ... and we readers are gradually made aware that it's not Foggy's -- it's the doctor's.

  • It's a great series. I've been onboard since issue 1.

To answer your question, Jeff, I think a lot of us are reading this series. It received several cappie nominations from us.
  • I think it's Marvel's best series, and the only one I follow from them, especially since it's not a huge part of the MU. I agree the Cyotee story was my least favorite to date, but it didn't really turn me off.

We're not alone in thinking it's good--it won three Eisners last year. The artwork is interesting too--not cartoony, but not realistic, either. It's in its own little world, kind of like a Mike Allred look (including the story he did).

I'm a little behind, as I get my comics ordered and shipped, but I must be up to the previous issue, as I know that was a possibility.

I can't imagine Matt can detect cancer cells--he's not THAT sensitive--and he probably wouldn't know what they were even if he could. He might detect heart arrythmia or blocked arteries, though.

  • I agree that Daredevil can't detect cancer but he could have sensed any changes in Foggy's heart-rate or breathing, anything to indicate that something was wrong, if he can tell a sick person from a healthy one. And if he was paying attention.

The current Daredevil series is representative on why I can't just "abandon" a character. I grew up during DD's "And the Black Widow" period and bought plenty of back issues as they were less expensive than, say, Amazing Spider-Man. Miller's Daredevil was not only a highwater mark for the title, but for comics. For every great run, there's an equally bad one. For every good run, there's two mediocre ones. I immensely disliked Shadowland but did not hesitate to give Mark Waid a chance to make DD good again. He more than succeeded.
