I know that there are three threads about DC's relaunch already but this is about the consequences of one apparent decision that Superman was the first super-hero to appear (publically) in this DCnU reality thus seemingly erasing the Justice Society and DC's Golden Age. Excuse me for a moment.....

*NNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! <MASSIVE SOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!>*

Where was I? Oh yes. While it makes sense and I agree with that direction for this new timeline, and I truly do, it does raise some questions as to parentage and inspirations, to wit:

  • Zatanna's father, Zatara the Magician, who did fight crime, must have pre-dated Superman's debut 5 years ago, if that's still the plan.
  • If these characters still exist, do their parents too? Jesse Quick/Johnny Quick, Hourman II and Hourman I, Jade & Obsidian/ Green Lantern I, Jack Knight and Starman, Damage and the Golden Age Atom, Citizen Steel and Commander Steel, Wildcat III and Wildcat I, you get the point.
  • What will be Black Canary's story NOW?
  • What will be Power Girl's story NOW?
  • How long has the Martian Manhunter been on Earth?
  • Is there a Doctor Fate or Spectre?
  • If the Western and War heroes "happened", did characters like Captain Comet, Vigilante, the Challengers of the Unknown, Task Force X, Congorilla, et al appear between "then" and "now"?
  • Did Barry Allen still read Flash Comics as a kid?
  • Did the Crisis happen? Invasion? Zero Hour? Final Night?
  • Is Superboy or Teen Clark still part of the Legion?

So many questions, some important some not. But there will be holes and gaps in this DCnU reality that will affect these new backstories.

    Dunno!

Like you say, if. In a lot of cases, I imagine they will be tossed to the way side like Yolanda Montez, Beth Chapel etc. in favour of , say, having Hawkman return with no mention of Hector to keep the backstory from getting too tangled.

    • What will be Black Canary's story NOW?

The original suffices, back in the day, it was assumed she was the original BC, the only reason she became the daughter was to keep it from looking like she was cradle robbing by hanging out with Green Arrow when she was old enough to have been there for D-Day.

    • What will be Power Girl's story NOW?

This hasn't been the first time her origins have been long, involved & tangled.

    • How long has the Martian Manhunter been on Earth?

A week and a half. He got in on the late bus last Thursday. Supes can still be the first hero. MM would have preferred to work undercover when he arrived. In the "original" continuity he was invisible for most of the early stories.

Did Barry Allen still read Flash Comics as a kid?

I don't see any reason why not. I imagine there were comic books on new Earth. They aren't dependant on the real life heroes being present.

    • Is Superboy or Teen Clark still part of the Legion?

Good question. I imagine it will come up in Legion Lost. If they remember him, he would be the first person they would go to in the 21st Century

  • It would be a real shame if Jack Knight never existed! But if Black Canary simply reverts to her Golden Age origin (which to be honest, wasn't known until the 70s), why can't there be a contemporary, new, only Hourman, Starman, Sandman, etc.?
  • John Moret beat me to most of my answers, so I'll just say "what he said." And what Philip said occurred to me, also -- since there are now 52 universes, we can assign the long continuities somewhere else, and just assume Earth-DCnU versions of whoever we want without any lineage. Like with "Crisis" and "Zero Hour," we'll probably have to assume nothing "happened" unless a character mentions it, whereupon it becomes continuity (again).

I'll just add to John's Power Girl line that right now she's the Supergirl of another Earth that no longer exists, and there's no reason that couldn't still be true. If they want to have her on Earth-DCnU, that is, and don't assign her to wherever the JSA ends up. (She is sort of the star of that team.) But, again, I suppose there could be more than one Power Girl, too!

  • They tried before to link Power Girl to Arion and Atlantis but that didn't have nearly the same appeal as Power Girl linked to (any) Superman.

I just find it strange, and a little arbitrary, that Damian Wayne, the new Aqualad, Blue Beetle III and the new Batwoman, as interesting and creative as they are, survive all this while other legacy characters will be erased because they aren't part of the Bat-Universe or featured in Brightest Day and its spinoffs. And don't get me started on the Rainbow Lanterns, either.

Let's put this into perspective: Chief Man-of-the-Bats, in continuity. Jesse Quick, part of both the JLA and JSA, I dunno!

  • I don't know why you'd find it strange.   All of the above are new and relatively unexplored, and that's the whole purpose of a reboot; to flesh out that which hasn't been plumbed.

Of course, it didn't! Who the heck cares about Arion and Atlantis any more, anyway?
  • When John Byrne’s The Man of Steel limited series did away with Clark Kent’s career as Superboy, I immediately threw away all of my Adventure Comics and Legion of Super-Heroes because they were out of continuity and no longer mattered. (I must admit I felt a bit silly a few months later when the “Pocket Universe” was introduced and brought them all back into continuity. D'oh!) Now that DC is reportedly doing away with the grand tradition of the Justice Society of America, I feel I have no choice but to discard my 11 hardcover editions of All Star Archives. That’s okay. I can use the shelf space.
  • I'll take them!

He appeared in the latest All New Batman: The Brave and the Bold!

On second thought, maybe I'd better wait to get rid of them until we see whether or not DC relegates those stories to another universe... say, "Earth-Two"?
