I am presently counting down to the bus later to-day that will take me from my sojourn in Seattle back to Santa Cruz , two states down . I have re-activated my account/box (Right now: MULTIVERSITY , LOONEY TOONS ,.

andBETTY AND VERONICA (32-pager) .) .

What kind of oddball places have you bought o seen comic books (Especially " real " comic books , 32/generally-paged such as ~ some of us ~ still buy .)

Conversely , what sot of places USED to carry

comics(Again ~ especially " our " type .) but don't anymore ? (By " our type " , I am especially acknowledging ~ THAT topic again ? ~ MAD , and Archie's digests . More , as well .)

To-day in Gey Ski-uh , the Emeald City , I bought some non-32-page stuff at a surviving " out-of-town newsstand " named ead All About It , in the Pike Place area .

I had a store here that , had I stayed hee , may well have become my LCS - Zanadu , at the edge of that same shopping district .

Thee is one of our number who periodically recalls , in his SoCal youth , " liquor stores " being

This seems a rather different kind of liquor store

e than the Northeastern " bottle shops " I recall my late-60s/early 70s parents going to !

I am a little rushed for time (+ , the keys are sticking , thus , my linbe breaks in trying to correct that)

now , but is this here sufficiently a springboard ?

  • We were in Seattle last April. I might have seen that comic store from the tour bus. Did spend some time at the Pike Place Market.

Hope your going back home means you're doing better.

  • I've heard people are shocked to hear that liquor stores used to sell comics in California. I'd guess in some states they only sell liquor. Here they're like very small Walmarts. I usually get pencils and pens there. Prices tend to be high on most items but oddly burritos are cheaper there than at Walmart. But the comics are long gone from them, as well as the 7-11s that also used to carry soda cups with superheroes, or Star Wars, on them. The last ones I saw were for Jurassic Park. 7-11 was the only place I ever saw Famous Monsters of Filmland. And Woolco carried those 3 for a dollar comics, mostly Gold Key. In fact Woolco is the only place I remember ever seeing Turok Son of Stone or Magnus Robot Fighter or Dr. Solar Man of the Atom. They clearly didn't check their comics section very well because Woolco also sold a First Kingdom paperback in the kids' books section. Walmart sold three or four special comics last year that looked like they were based on Marvel movies, but otherwise the only places I'm seeing them at all these days are comic book stores and Archie digests at Kmart. And those don't seem to be every issue. The same bent, dog-eared digests are still there week after week. I vaguely remember a newstand that sold comics we stopped at on our way to somewhere about 40 years ago. That was the only time I saw an actual newstand that actually sold comic books.

  • I got my comics at a local liquor store for a few years. He took out the spinner racks (I think there were two) and was very apologetic about it. I don't know if he was pressured into it.

  • The guy here was pretty loud and rude about removing his.

  • ...Meaning he was loud and rude about " Aaah , it's good to kick the can of that kiddie [STUFF]!" ?????????

  • More like "I'm sick of you kids coming in here all day!" I remember one department store didn't allow kids in the toy section unless a parent or guardian was watching them because they were sick of picking up the toys off the floor. A clerk would actually escort you out of the toy section and tell you not to come back.

  • ...Come back EVER , even with your parents ?

Only come back w/the folks ?

This didn't happen to be Sears ~ or Penny's ~ did it ?

  • ...BTW , what I was in Seattle to medically take care of (tho the operation actually happened in nearby Everett) was ~ the amputation of both my big toes , a LONG-running diabetic (Type 2) infection ~ Given that it was nessecary , it was good that it happened:-( - Except that the follow-up , briefly , from the Emerald City-era folks was SEVERELY lacking , and some of the problems that I thought would go away with " culling " myself down to 7&1/2 toes (I had 1/2 of a middle - left - toe cut off some years back , for the same reason) ~ um , haven't . Yet . I need more follow-up .

I hhad idealized thought that , back in Surf City , I not only might allow myself to go to , the beach , y'know (Which a medico here had advised against me going into being a cautious medical person , I know , but .).........but teach myself/learn to surf ! This is Surf City , after all . No , I never learned it before .

      Obviously , it would not be at a 19-yr old's level , but...........Sound sorta/too Oprah/Marriane Williamson-esque ???????????

  • Don't come back without an adult.

Might have been Penny's. Why? Did they tend to do that sort of thing?

  • If someone in the medical profession advised you not to you should at least get a second opinion first.
