Is there interest in a real-time discussion of "One World Under Doom," as we did with "Absolute Power"? It begins in February with these titles:
- ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #1 (OF 9)
- DOOM ACADEMY #1 (OF 5)
- THUNDERBOLTS: DOOMSTRIKE #1 (OF 5)
- X-FACTOR #7
- FANTASTIC FOUR #29
- RED HULK #1
I haven't been reading Amazing Spider-Man, but I do know the "8 Deaths of Spider-Man" storyline has something to do with Doctor Doom. If that's important to "One World Under Doom," then these titles are also part of the discussion:
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #67
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #68
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #68.DEATHS

DOOM ACADEMY #1-2
The only Doom appearance so far was the first page of the first issue, where he says, "You belong to Doom!" Then follows with, "... for the semester."
So this isn't directly tied into One Wolrd Under Doom — it's a coming-of-age story about the main characters from Strange Academy (Zoe, Doyle, Shayle, Zelma), plus some new characters (Scoop, Marta, Greta). I'm not usually a fan of this sort of thing, but the setting means we have a little genre-bending. They are in a castle, after all, so there aree the traditional whispering voices, hidden tunnels in the walls, portraits with eyes that move, Dungeons & Dragson in an actual dungeon, etc. I've enjoyed the first two issues. It's tempting me to read the back issues of Strange Academy, so I can understand more of the references. (Apparently Doyle Dormammu's ex-girlfriend tried to kill them all. I can relate.)
DOCTOR STRANGE OF ASGARD #1-3
I have really enjoyed this series. Of course, I’m a longtime Doctor Strange fan — he was one of the few superheroes of my youth I could actually imagine myself becoming — which influences my opinion.
But I have the same problem with magic-based characters as many other fans, in that their powers are ill-defined and lend themselves to lazy writer’s fiat. Strange is less prone to this than most, but he still had his moments of deus ex magicka.
Not in this series, though.
Strange wants to become the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, since Doom stole his title back on Earth. Impressively, and amusingly, everybody he tells this to gives him a hard time about it. “Why not go fight for what’s yours instead of crawling here and begging for a job?” seems to be the general Asgardian attitude, which makes sense given their warrior culture. Even Thor, who gives his buddy the OK but won't give him any help. It's Viking culture. You're not supposed to NEED help.
Also, there never has been a Sorcerer Supreme of the Asgardian plane because, as everyone tells him, “We’ve never needed one.”
This general condescension to Strange's job search — and Strange himself, with most Asgardians remarking on how physically small he is — is a constant source of chuckles as Strange goes about getting what he wants.
And you and I know he wants the job so that he CAN go and fight Doom. He hasn’t said it, so a reader who wants nothing to do with the crossover (or is completely unaware of it) doesn’t receive information he doesn’t want. IOW, this miniseries can stand completely alone, outside the crossover, if one so chooses. But the subtext is there if you DO want it. Nicely done.
There is one reference that I don’t know about, though, and that’s about the skalds. Apparently they were important in the magical infrastructure of Asgard, and Loki mucked that up recently in some title I’m not reading. But several people angrily remark on it — Loki is even less popular in Asgard currently than usual.
Strange isn’t completely powerless, but his magic really doesn’t come into play much. He needs to cast a certain kind of spell in order to channel Asgardian magic, which starts with getting a job, an apartment, and then the ingredients. All of which is funny in a fish-out-of-water way. Strange is NOT having a good time, especially when he has to get the wishbone of a duck the skull of a dark troll. Hi-jinks, and also some mindless slaughter, ensue. Hey, it’s Asgard. Mindless slaughter is a common occurence.
But there’s another complication, in that Strange is present for a murder, which he can’t tell anybody about without sabotaging himself. That means he has to cover it up from King Thor, and worse, all-seeing Sif. His allies are Loki and Clea, and the former means Strange is up to his eyeballs in dirty tricks, and is putting himself in danger of a possible public execution.
Two issues to go. Recommended.
Strange is NOT having a good time, especially when he has to get the wishbone of a duck the skull of a dark troll.
Hopefully, not of a duck named Howard.
I would be perfectly happy if it was Howard. The character started as a mildly entertaining satire, but after the movie and Bill Mantlo's version, he's just an embarrassment. If he joined Mopee in the memory hole, I wouldn't mind. Better still if his wishbone had some use!
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #2-5
FANTASTIC FOUR #29-31
It’s really easy to write Doom wrong — he’s not just an arrogant, power-mad villain, nor just a narcissistic megalomanic, nor just an unsocialized, ruthless creep. Yes, he is all of those things. But it is masked by a façade of old-world nobility and a genuine, if self-serving, sense of noblesse oblige. It is telling that he goes for the old-world title “emperor” rather than 21st century equivalents.
But he also has a core belief that he is right; that there is no problem he cannot solve and that he is best suited to run the world. Which One World Under Doom is sort of showing to be largely true. (Of course, it’s easy to stop war, hunger, etc., with unlimited power. If I were The Spectre, I would indeed stop the war in Ukraine in a day, by rolling the Russian troops and materiel back to Russian borders, then walking through Putin’s security into his office and saying, “Fix what you’ve broken or I’ll send you to literal hell.” Maybe give him a taste. And then send the ghosts of dead Ukrainian children to haunt him for the rest of his life. See? Everything’s easy if you have God-like powers and no fear of repercussion. Also: Rain food from the sky everywhere people are hungry.)
But this core belief is undercut by an underlying, almost subconscious sense of inferiority to Reed Richards, which he lies to himself about, but which nevertheless forces him to act out like a child. He literally envies Richards — the adulation of the masses, a loving family, true service to humanity. Oh, and an unscarred face.
But only Reed Richards. Writers who don’t “get” Doom write him as thin-skinned, reacting to every slight, from any source. Nonsense. He may indeed seethe at small slights, but we would never know, because he would never let it show. Instead, he would respond with haughty, high-sounding words that are actually insults, and then proceed to demonstrate that he’s already thought through every variation of the current situation. He regards everyone but Richards as an inferior, and their insults like the barking of dogs.
It's only Richards that really gets his goat. He even loses his temper when fighting the FF sometimes.
But he doesn’t want Reed’s superhero team. For one reason, he wants to create a better one, to show the world his superiority to Richards. But moreover, he hates them personally. Ben Grimm’s greatest sin is probably the humiliation he served up in Fantastic Four #40. Johnny Storm’s greatest sin is probably when he slept with Doom’s fiance in Fantastic Four #33-34 (legacy #678-679).
Nothing springs to mind about why he’d hate Sue, and maybe he doesn’t. As Valeria’s mother, she might get special dispensation. Also, in Secret Wars he made her his wife. So he apparently wants her because Reed has her, but only as wife and mother.
He also has an uneasy standoff with the FF; first because they kept beating him (the gall!) and then because of the advent of Valeria. He doesn’t want to kill Valeria’s family (although he will if it gets him something he wants), so by and large his appearances are limited. Which is good! No “Joker fatigue” here! And when he does appear, it’s an event.
Like this one.
FANTASTIC FOUR #29
There’s still a problem in Doom-world: vampires. After “Blood Hunt” vampires lost their vulnerability to sunlight. They still exist, but as people with disability, the need for blood to survive. They are depicted, at least in the U.S., as moved to the fringes of society, mostly homeless and starving, hated and feared. (Sorry, X-Men.) The FF get bad publicity for defending some vamps from a murderous mob in NYC. Reed solves the problem in the most Reed-like way possible, by inventing a synthetic fluid that nourishes vampires and can be made from ordinary things found in most kitchens. He distributes the formula worldwide.
A highlight: Ben, Jennifer Walters and Alicia (and a waitress) debate the legality of Doom’s takeover. Honestly, you could substitute the word “Trump” for “Doom” in any of these conversations, and it would still work.
Captain's Note: It is never mentioned or hinted at, but I'm convinced that Doom engineered "Blood Hunt," leaving Doctor Strange no choice but to bargain away the Sorcerer Supreme title. As I said, this has never been discussed in-story. But "Blood Hunt" sure worked out well for him, didn't it? Further, in this issue we see that there are still vampires -- Doom solved the invasion problem but didn't remove vampires, a potential threat to his Pax Latveria from the board. I think that supports my suspicion: He left vampires as a reminder that he is the Great Savior, and to give humanity an enemy to unite against. This is all head canon ... at the moment.
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #2
The bulk of the issue is a philosophical debate between Doom and Valeria. She challenges him to truthfully tell her his endgame. He challenges her to defend democracy. If you want North’s insight into Doom, here it is, and honestly, this was more fun than any “action scene.”
The ending is no surprise if you’ve seen the cover to:
FANTASTIC FOUR #30
Grimm, who long ago adjusted to his life as The Thing (finally ending the cycle of Thing periodically going off the deep end, which grew tiresome) does not take this development well. In fact, the title of the story is “Rock Bottom.” Another insightful psychological tale.
Special guest star: Phillip Masters.
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #3
The Avengers, who have already had their butts handed to them once, try a different approach. They recruit supervillains who don’t want to serve Doom (they want to rule things themselves) in a frontal assault on Doom, which is a distraction, while the magic-users secretly invade the minds of all the world leaders to find out why they bent the knee to a would-be dictator. Sadly, they learn what we have all learned watching the entire Republican Party do the same out here in the real world. No magic or coercion was involved; they are all acting out of self-interest.
Meanwhile, as he has shown with every confrontation against super-teams so far, Doom expected this and uses it for his own PR ends. He engineers a breakout at The Raft, which the heroes have to respond to, and then thanks them for their service to Doom.
FANTASTIC FOUR #31
I didn’t know this, but it has apparently been established sometime after I stopped reading Fantastic Four that if one member loses his or her powers, all of them start losing their powers. They’re linked somehow. And with Ben “cured,” the other three are losing their powers, too.
Their solution is to fire up the ol’ space rocket and go find some cosmic rays.
Well, special cosmic rays, which is another update from the origin. Apparently what transformed the FF were specially special cosmic rays, not just ordinary ones, and they go in search through the multiverse to the origin of various FF teams to soak up their rays. Then something goes catastrophically wrong.
Highlight: Cameos of various multiversal FFs.
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #4
Dormammu has been monitoring events, and sees that the Dr. Strange’s spells to prevent Dormammu from entering our plane have not been maintained by Doom. And Dormammu invades.
Boy howdy, does he! He shunts the Avengers, FF and X-Men to a (slowly shrinking) pocket dimension so that they can’t interfere (and will soon, you know, die). Then he goes mano-a-mano with Doom.
And what a show it is! I won’t spoil it, but it’s fantastic. If you only buy one book in this crossover …
Captain’s note: My first thought when I started reading this book is that Doom has shown enormous foresight in all scenarios so far, but he forgets to lock the door against Dormammu? He’s been planning this for a long time, so I assume he let Dormammu in on purpose, to further some cunning scheme. I read the dialogue carefully, and there’s no hint either way (which I think further reinforces my theory). But we’ve seen Doom steal the power of every powerful adversary he’s ever crossed in various stories (Silver Surfer, Galactus, Beyonder). It's his go-to move. So I assumed he’d do so here, and the book would end with the Flames of the Faltine dancing around Doom’s head.
OK, so that last bit didn't happen. But I still think Doom allowed Dormammu to invade on purpose. I just have no confirmation.
Instead …
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM #5
Well, I won’t spoil it. But the battle ends with a twist that benefits Doom long term (and it’s not the Flames of Regency).
Meanwhile Thor, who has lived his whole life in a monarchy (and is currently a king himself) starts voicing doubts about opposing Doom. Odin ruled the entire nine worlds, keeping order and peace between them, and he sees Doom doing that here with nation-states. One of those with a good counter-argument is Brain Drain, who — I learned as a result of this issue — is the brain of a former Nazi in an exoskeleton trying to make up for past misdeeds. He’s somewhat familiar with how fascism poisons everything it touches. The argument is left for the reader to ponder.
Finally, Maria Hill arrives with a revelation about Doom … that we’ll have to wait until next issue to learn. Which, according to the next-issue blurb, will be in two months, not one. I don’t know why.
It’s been a while, so let’s play catch-up.
NEW AVENGERS #1: Marketed as New Thunderbolts, I missed the first issue and have it on order. The new team is Bucky and Natasha leading Hulk, Clea, Wolverine (female version), Namor and Carnage (Flash Thompson, I think).
RUNAWAYS #1: Stealth tie-in that I missed. On order.
INSURGENT IRON MAN #7-8 (of 10): Tony Stark’s anti-Doom plan is to make secret deals with the Latverian underground, who are even worse people than Doom. This is a plan so bad even the Black Widow says it’s bad. This series ends with issue #10, but I don’t know if that’s because of sales or because the crossover is hurtling toward climax and this part of the story is over. I’ll probably find out in two months.
And here's what's coming up:

"Fixed" that for you.
The only part of this that I've read has been Doom Academy, which, as I've said, was a nice enough little story, but Doom was such a minimal presence in it tthat I felt like it was a Strange Academy story that someone copy-replaced "Strange" with "Doom".
G.O.D.S. sure evaporated immediately after coming out, didn't it? I personally haven't read any of it, or seen any chit-chat online. I could get a collection, I guess, but at this point it would feel like homework.
G.O.D.S. sort.of.fizzled, yes. But I sure.liked.it.
