Outlaw Showdown

This is a one-shot, but I've started a thread for each of Oni Press's other "EC" comics, so...

  • "Cool, Cool Water" - A quartet of train thieves murders a Paiute family and are pursued by an African American lawman based on Bass Reeves.
  • "Fire in the Hole" - The sole survivor of a coal mine disaster suffers survivor's guilt. Or it it something more?
  • "The Cure" - A snake-oil salesman gets his just desserts.
  • "Pony Express" - The tale of a lone rider set against the backdrop of the Pyramid Lake War.
  • "Colt Single Action Army Revolver" - The tale of a gun and its owners by Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Davis from Two-Firsted Tales.

I got to my LCS yesterday too late (three minutes after it opened) to get the "A" cover. Life is full of little disappointments.

This is a "$9 unit" but well-worth every penny.

  • I passed this up yesterday, but I'll be keeping an eye out for it in the future.

  • I wasn't as enthusiastic. I kept expecting typical EC-style twist endings, but "Cool, Cool Water" and "Pony Express" didn't end so much as they just stopped. "Fire in the Hole" and "The Cure" had good horror elements, but the endings were basically set on Page 1 and the stories marched relentlessly to the end you knew was coming. My favorite story in the book, tellingly, was the EC reprint.

I don't mean to be too negative. But I had a couple of "so what" moments.

  • That (as someone once said) is what makes horseraces.

...the endings were basically set on Page 1

Sometimes I derive a certain satisfaction in a story playing out exactly the way I expect.

On a happy note: I did manage to score a copy of the "A" cover! BY1qk4m.gif
