Another part of my childhood gone. I remember watching her on TV, and in movies. Always fun, and funny.
A couple of us were talking about her just last month, as it seems she was the basis for one of Jack Kirby's comic-book characters-- "Mad Harriet". (But if you go to Wikipedia, they were quoting a published interview which got it WRONG, and listed a different character... it's very tough to "fix" things at that site, even when you've done your research and know you're right. Apparently they don't accept "personal research", only published articles or interviews.)
...Fo semi-comics , she wrote - " wrote " , I suppose - a couple of light-weight , humorous , books , with plenty a' cartoon illustrations PHYLLIS DILLER'S MARRIAGE MANUAL , and PHILLIS DILLER'S CHILDCARE MANUAL , or similar , which I had one or both of in mass-market pb a long time ago...........
And...Watch the column to your right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-)
I fondly recall watching "THE PRUITTS OF SOUTHHAMPTON", a half-hour sitcom that was on Friday nights (was it 9 or 9:30?). If memory serves, it was on the same year as THE GREEN HORNET and THE TIME TUNNEL, and I used to watch it right after those 2, and before THE AVENGERS (which was on ABC that year Fridays at 10). So for one year, Fridays was a whole night of ABC for me.
The show was about a once-rich family that had somehow fallen on hard times, but tried to keep up appearances. She refused to sell the mansion, for example.
(Now, can anybody remember what was on in the OTHER half of that hour between 9 & 10? For some reason, I'm thinking Tim Conway may have been involved...)
My memory of her is tied to Ed Sullivan and Bob Hope. She would come on Sullivan's show and do five minutes of great material.
I also remember her going with Hope to Vietnam for holiday shows. She and Hope had a great chemistry.
