Every week, one item or another in my pull and hold stands out for me above the rest in one way or another. Sometimes it’s a periodical, sometimes a graphic novel, sometimes a collection. Does that happen to you? If so, let’s hear about it here. It can be an item you’ve long anticipated or something you bought on a whim. If it’s something you were really looking forward to but ended up being a big disappointment, let’s hear about that here, too. I’ve been meaning to start this topic for a long time now, but chose today to post about something I’ve been waiting for a long time, long before it was even solicited.
SILVER SURFER EPIC COLLECTION BY STEVE ENGLEHART AND MARSHAL ROGERS
This is a favorite run of mine, but I’ve read it only twice: once as it was released, and I re-read it once after that. It came out as an “ESSENTIAL” a few years ago, but for this I held out for color.

NEW HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #2:
I hate to repeat myself from month-to-month, but New History of the DC Universe #2 would have gotten the nod even if I had bought more than one other new comic this week (that I disliked as much as I liked this one).

To be clear, I did not buy this comic. I might have if the interior artwork looked like this, but I flipped through it and deemed it too ugly to read.

Black painter Melvyn Waring can summon famous Black people from history to help find his missing wife.
"The gripping new saga from two Milestone Initiative members — writer Jordan Clark and artist Atagun İlhan — uses science fiction and comedy to explore the importance of Black history, the connections between the past and present, and learning to push through difficult life changes," the PR says.
"As Black history is literally being erased all around us, ANCESTRAL RECALL feels like an urgent call to not just preserve it but celebrate the links between our past present and future,” said writer Jordan Clark. “Melvin's journey takes readers through time and space and introduces them to figures who are rarely seen in history books such as Jean-Louis Michel, the greatest swordsman of the 17th century and Cheryl Linn Glass, the first Black woman race car driver. The series is my love letter to those who paved the way and hopefully an affirmation for us here in the now."

I picked this up today, and am looking forward to reading it!

Editor Sarah Litt loves this concept, and so do I. #1 is a good story well-told, and one well worth telling.
HAWKMAN: WINGS ACROSS TIME (Yes, I do count DCF volumes as "comics" rather than "collections.")
The beauty of this one is that it is a single volume and goes three issues beyond where the "archive" series left off.
Hawkman is one I should definitely get eventually. I've got a trade paperback from the late 80s of the Brave & Bold issues, but I'm pretty sure everything else will be new to me.
That said, Hawkman's never been a favorite of mine, so we'll see when I get around to it.

Eh, it was all right. Not really my cuppa. There's a whole new status quo, which, I suppose, is to be expected. (I will assume that anyone who cares is already aware.) That's the problem with both DC and Marvel these days. In order to provide somethning new, writers are continually coming up with something different. I'm not arguing against innovation; I'm just saying that if the new ideas aren't better than what has come before, maybe it's time to step back from a particular character or franchise for a while. (They've already screwed up the numbering.) Rather than churning out stories that are so far afield from the classic model (and I'm talking about Marvel as well as DC here), I'd rather see them reprint some of the stuff they already have that have never been reprinted before (1940s Captain America, 1960s Superman). Writer Matt Fraction is committed to doing self-contained stories to start (for how long, I don't know), but I'm ambivalent about continuing. If this series had come out a year ago I'd've been all over it. As it is, I'm still feeling the burn from $60 worth of "Absolute" comics.
You know what else shipped yesterday? Love Everlasting v3 (reprinting #11-15).
This is a series I have ever followed only via tpb. When the first one shipped, I hadn't even heard of it, but bought it strictly in the basis of Tom King's name. Since then I have seen individual issues on the shelves, but not the solicitations for v2 or v3; I "just happened" to see them on the shelves the day they shipped. When v2 shipped I re-read v1, but I don't think I'm going to re-read either before reading v3 (well, maybe v2). I flipped ahead to the last page (just to see whether or not this was the end of the series), and the final caption read: "To be continued... in a little while." So I don't know what that means. Is it on hiatus? Anyway, if you haven't read this series and think you know what to expect, chances are you don't. Recommended.
