The cover of this comic shows a multitude of Power Girls with various height, weight, and hair variations, in what feels to me to be an homage to the kinds of "silly" covers that were common during the Silver Age. Hey! Let's stick an image in here!

The basic story inside is simple: Power Girl is attending a convention of some kind, and is addressing a large group of fans cosplaying as her. One of them is there under false pretenses, and with the help of her fans, Power Girl saves the day.

From the opening page, this comic is all about female empowerment. It had me alternately laughing out loud, and crying, as I saw my daughter reflected in various characters, but especially in the littlest cosplayer, Morgan. All of these women idolize Power Girl, and their cosplay is a sign of honor and respect they have for her.

If you've never read an issue of Power Girl's series you should give it a chance, they've all been good.  But this issue, this issue is a classic. Everyone should read this one. It's going right into my daughter's collection, and I expect it will get read many, many times in the future.

I hope that, in whatever way Power Girl returns post-relaunch, that Matt Sturges again has the chance to write her adventures.

  • "The Littlest Cosplayer" would be a great children's book title or band name.

  • Power Girl is an under-rated book and Power Girl is an under-rated character. With DC again emphasizing Supergirl, Kara Zor-L must fade back into the background. With her origin once more to be "revised" apparently, she is in danger of being the Reboot's Hawkman--too much work to make viable and the butt (sorry!) of too many jokes!
  • Okay, you talked me into it. I'll get one the next time I go to the store.

  • Yeah, when you boil it down, you can't write a "one sentence description" of Power Girl without mentioning at least 2 other super-heroes.

"Well you see, there's this guy Superman, who is a strange visitor from another planet with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, and he's got this cousin Supergirl, who has the same powers and is a teenager, and then there's this other version of them from another Earth in another universe, except that Superman is an older man, and his cousin is an adult. That's Power Girl. The adult version of the cousin of another super-hero from a different reality."

It doesn't flow as nicely as, "Struck by a bolt of lightning, Barry Allen is the Flash, the fastest man alive!" or "Given a power ring that makes whatever one imagines appear by a dying alien, Hal Jordan becomes an intergalactic police and rescue agent as Green Lantern!"

To change her origin does her a dis-service, but to leave it intact makes it a little more derivative than most people can take.

Sadly, despite the excellent portrayal of her personality and character, most people look at her and think, "Imagine if Superman's cousin were of legal age, and had big boobs!"

  • I don't know it has to be that complicated. "The cousin of the Superman of a parallel Earth, with the same powers."
  • I had this one in my hand, but it was a big week. I'll have to check it out on my next trip.
  • I'm disappointed about some of the cancellations as well (Xombi, we hardly knew ye!) but I have hope that I will find new favorites amongst both the initial and future offerings from the new line.
