  • One of the obits says she was "discovered" for the role of Harley Quinn when she was seen playing her wacko character on Days of Our Lives. Gayle and I fell into watching DOOL, which was fun to watch (crazy plots and likeable actors) and eventually saw Arlene in it after we had already "heard" her as Harley. By the way, her husband Christopher Lloyd was the producer of Frazier and Modern Family, not the actor of the same name.

  • I read -- somewhere -- that Paul Dini was home sick, and therefore watching daytime TV, and saw Sorkin as a harlequin in a dream sequence on Days of Our Lives. He says that's what inspired him to create Harley for Joker as a sidekick/foil.

I watched a clip of her on the show (with John DeLancie, of "Q" fame), and she was using a Brooklyn accent there that sounded very Harley-y. I couldn't find a clip of the dream sequence, but here's a still:

    HERE it is.

And HERE's Paul Dini and Kevin Smith discussing it.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I didn't know about that.

  • I just watched all of the videos. In 1968, when I was stationed in northern Virginia, Arleen's favorite restaurant, Hot Shoppes, was also my favorite.

It was a chain owned by Mariott, which also owned most of the the Big Boy restaurants.

The hotel she worked in was not the Trump hotel. When we visited there in 1990 the Old Post Office hadn't yet become a hotel. It was still a no-longer-in-use post office that had vendors selling sovenirs, etc. I bought a T-shirt from them that I still wear occasionally.
