Superman vs. Shazam

This is the one I was indifferent about pre-ordering when it was first solicited, but Rob's enthusiasm convinced me to buy it. I remember when the Superman vs. Spider-Man treasury edition first came out in 1976. I was intrigued, but not particularly impressed. At that time, I wasn't buying either character's current title; I preferred the reprints. And I didn't develop an appreciation for Ross Andru until years... decades... later (2012, in fact). I was also, in 1976, on the verge of dropping all the treasury editions, from both companies. I didn't buy any of the other DC/Marvel collaborations until they were reprinted in the '90s, and I certainly didn't buy the DC/DC "first they fight, then they team up" ones. But I have been buying some of the more recent facsimile edition reprints. Superman vs. Wonder Woman was okay, but Superman vs. The Flash was a huge disappointment. It was the latter which initially convinced me not to buy the Superman vs. Shazam one, but I plan to buy "All New Collectors' Edition #C-58" today after all.

  • I have fond memories of this one.  At a time when very few comics were published at regular USA size here in Brazil, ANCE #C-58 was translated into Brazilian Portuguese and published in the Treasury format that I had only seem previously in our version of "Superman vs Spider-Man".

It was a pleasant read, too.  As the cover implies, it also makes good use of Kara and Mary.

  • I won't be able to get to my LCS for another week, so I hope they still have copies when I finally make it in!

  • I've read it now and I'm really quite pleased with it. It has two things going for it: 1) It's all-new, no reprint (like Superman vs. Flash), and 2) It's not available elsewhere (like Superman vs. Wonder Woman). Also, I appriciate it more today than I would have in 1978. (I was very sophisticated when I was 14.) Still, of all the "versus" treasuries, the best one is Superman vs. Muhammad Ali.

    • Actually, Jeff, the tabloid was reprinted in the 2013 Superman Vs SHAZAM! trade paperback which included DC Comics Presents #33-34, #49 and Annual #3.

This was one of those books that I knew I had but couldn't find for the longest time. Luckily now, I know exactly where it is!

It doesn't include the "Captain Thunder" story but that one is in Superman in the Seventies (2000).

    • Huh. So it is. I wonder why I didn't buy that...? Actually, I don't even remember it. Before I ordered the TE, I did check Shazam! The Greatest Stories Ever Told, which I do have. If I had known about the Superman vs. Shazam! tpb and owned it I wouldn't have bought the #C-58 reprint, but I'll still recommend one or the other. Howzzat?
