Hey, remember back in the Silver Age when the Black Widow was a member of the Avengers? Yeah, about that...

  • Y'know, I was wondering about this just last night, when I was reading AVENGERS # 100, as background prep work for seeing the movie this weekend. That story included every single person who had ever been an Avenger up to that point (even the lame-o Swordsman), but Black Widow was notable by her absence. But as the Aged One says, she hadn't yet "officially" accepted membership into the Assemblers' ranks, even though she'd appeared quite a bit over the years.

Was Wonder Man ever officially a member? If so, he was another no-show in AVENGERS # 100, unless of course he counts as showing up in the person of the Vision, or however that convoluted storyline played out. In my consecutive reading of the entire Silver and Bronze Age of the AVENGERS, I haven't gotten to the secret origin of the Vision story yet.

I'm assuming that you're asking in regard to Wonder Man's introduction, in "The Coming of the . . . Wonder Man", from The Avengers # 9 (Oct., 1964).  If Mr. S.A. doesn't mind my jumping in here, I took the liberty of scanning my copy of that issue---and it appears the answer is no.

After Wonder Man "helps" the Avengers battle Baron Zemo and the Enchantress and the Executioner---a deception arranged by Zemo---W.M. tells the Assemblers that he had hoped to join them.  Gauged on his performance during the fight, the heroes consider it.

Except Captain America is suspicious of W.M.  Cap smells a rat.  So, from a distance, the Enchantress casts a spell, making the Avengers believe that Wonder Man came to them for help in curing a fatal disease which he has contracted.

"Yeah, that's it . . . I'm dying from an incurable disease," says Wondy, catching on.

Henry Pym and Tony Stark and Dr. Don Blake put all of their scientific and medical knowledge to the problem, but before any cure can be found, or before any decision is rendered on W.M.'s petition for Avengerhood, Zemo puts the second part of his plan into motion.  In short, the Avengers discover that Wonder Man has been secretly working for Zemo all along---which kind of puts the kibosh on any further discussion of making him an Avenger.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for stepping in, Commander! The official list of members prior to Black WIdow (which is pretty much the roster for that #100 blowout) is:

    Thor - #1

    Hulk

    Iron Man

    Ant-Man

    Wasp

    Captain America - #4

    Hawkeye - #16

    Quicksilver

    Scarlet Witch

    Swordsman - #20

Hercules - #45 (when BW turned it down)

    Black Panther - #52

    Vision - #58

    Black Knight - #71

BW - #111 (and #112 and then gone)

She was followed by Mantis, Beast, Moondragon and Hellcat, a good indication we have left the SA behind.

BTW, I salute you reading back issues to prepare for the movie! I can't imagine they'll be much help. Although I'll bet if you turn to the person next to you and say, "Y'know, Black Widow didn't actually join the Avengers until issue #111," you will dazzle them with your indepth knowledge, thanks to Mr. Silver Age. You're welcome.

  • BTW, I am assuming that the person sitting next to you will be your wife or one of your kids, or else you may be escorted from the premises. A word to the wise.

  • In case you didn't get that far, note that at the end of the article, I give all credit to the gang on this here board for inspiring that column tie-in based on our Silver Sightings thread from a few months back. I don't know that it will bring in any new visitors, but you never know.

  • Great that you included the link Mr SA, but it doesn't seem to work...

  • Weird, it worked for me.

  • Hopefully I'm in the minority then...

  • It's about time this showed up! I read the magazine a couple of weeks ago.

  • You know Brent, he likes to give subscribers a little head start on all that Silvery goodness.

I actually just got the next issue in the mail today, just before I posted the link to the last issue. In fact, I turned in next month's column today, too, so I saw THREE MSA columns today!

Yeah, the CapCom link in the column doesn't go anywhere. I'll let Brent know. It looks to my Luddite eyes as if he included the period at the end of the sentence in the link. If you cut and past it and take that off, it works. So it should be an easy fix, he says having been at CBGxtra for long enough to know better.
