the CW drops a trailer for Gotham Knights, which by my count is its third Batman show that doesn't actually feature Batman (and the fourth overall, if one counts Birds of Prey from 20 years ago*). The premise? Bruce Wayne has been murdered and Gotham goes to hell (or goes deeper than it already is).

From TVLine "Gotham Knights Trailer: Misha Collins' Harvey Dent Breaks Some Bat News"

TVLine wrote:

Per the series’ official logline, “Batman is dead, and a powder keg has ignited Gotham City without the Dark Knight to protect it. In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his adopted son Turner Hayes is framed for killing the Caped Crusader, along with the children of some of Batman’s enemies.”

Coming to the rescue are alternate universe versions of Carrie Kelley, Duela Dent and Stephanie Brown, along with characters new to the series, all being chased by District Attorney Harvey Dent

This is probably all I'm going to write about this show. Since I didn't take to Riverdale, and bailed on Gotham two seasons in, I know I'm not going to like this. But somebody else out there might.

* We chew on Birds of Prey the TV series a bit over here: "Birds of Prey"

  • ClarkKent Johnson is right!

Arrow, Batwoman, Gotham, Birds of Prey, the upcoming Batgirl ... heck, throw in Smallville, where Green Arrow stood in for Batman in the World's Finest team. It's annoying, because in almost all cases they never say what happened to Batman, just that he's "missing." Which, to me, means "dead," because he's not Batman if he voluntarily leaves Gotham. But I understand why they don't say that, as I don't want to watch a show (or a movie, thank you Zach Snyder's proposed Justice League III) where Batman's dead. Too depressing.

I used to think there was some rights issue for Batman appearing on TV, thanks to the splintering of rights by the Batman TV show. (It took about 50 years for lawyers to hash out a way to release the show on DVD that satisfied all parties.) Then he showed up on Titans, although he wasn't any Batman I recognized. (I enjoyed Ian Glen's character, but he really wasn't Batman.) So he can be used. So what's the deal?

Anyway, yeah, I won't be watching Gotham Knights. In fact, the only three CW shows I keep on my calendar are Flash, Superman & Lois and Riverdale, and we're a season behind on them all, because my wife has lost interest. It's likely we're done with them.

We'll watch Stargirl on HBO Max (for another season, anyway), along with Titans. (And the Green Lantern show, should it ever arrive.) We'll probably skip Batgirl, as it's another Batman show without Batman.

Also, what's with "Turner Hayes" as Bruce Wayne's adopted son? Why not Dick Grayson? Or any of the other Robins? Why invent a fifth adopted son, and ignore the existing four? That's just Hollywood at its worst.

  • "Why invent a fifth adopted son, and ignore the existing four?"

Perhaps to "villainize" him during sweeps.

  • Ugh.
