The Rifleman

I mentioned this in my " Ratings " post , but I saw about $&1/2 episodes of 50s TV series " THE RIFLEMAN " , with Chuck Connors , on AMC this weekend .

It was one of those old TV series I was aware from , but had never seen .

  Now I have :-) .

It was a Western , starring Connors as the widowed father of Johnny Crawford , who at the time got a teen-pop singing career ( " Rumors " " It's Cindy's Birthday " " Your Nose Is Gonna Grow " ) going , expanding upon his TV exposure there .

Somehow , I was under the impression that the series followed them moving from town to town , only having each other in the long run , luike a Western LOne Wold And Cub , but in fact Connors was a rancher and they stayed in one town and there was a regular actor as sherriff and the the town bartender and no doubt others .

A little break-time sound bite AMC used had Connors saying " This is out home . We're gonna stay here . " or similar .

  • ...( Perhaps you might've guessed that I pressed " 4 " and had the capitalization fritzed up . ) Umerrr , that was " 4&1/2 " ( of 6 ) episodes , 'podner . Keep the faith !
  • I loved The Rifleman growing up. Channel 39 showed all of the old Western shows every Saturday growing up, and during my sports off-seasons it blended perfectly that when the Saturday morning cartoons were coming to an end Rifleman was just beginning. The 30 minute nature was perfect for my little kid mind.
  • ...It's on ME-TV now , an hour of it at 6 PM (Cali).........I saw a two-part episode , where Connors has to leave town , on a rather dangerous and of dubious/borderline legitimacy , if not legality job , because a drought has killed off his cattle at their ranch .

He leaves Crawford to stay with " Miss Millie " in town...In the town he went to , a perpetual town drunk is played by...Who ??? I forget now , but watching the end credits , someone who seemed to be the actor playing the drunk was listed - He had , for one , the sort of name you expect an actor who plays a town drunk in an old Western to have !!!!!!!!! You know what I mean !!!!!

The first episode (I looked) , and I presume the second , were TV-G - with this many guns , drinking , smoking , and a barroom tart/drink-cadger who(m) Chuck at least dallies with (I didn't catch every detail . For one thing , I was receiving my later IV - I am in a physical rehab home situation now) ?????????
