  • Bruce's family was always portrayed as wealthy and successful. The bulk of their fortune was property as there were "Wayne" this and "Wayne" that all over Gotham.

  • I think the Wayne's were originally portrayed as a wealthy family. As comics fandom took hold in the 60s and beyond people began to question just how wealthy a family would have to be to afford everything in Batman's arsenal. I think it's fair to say that the stories beyond Thomas Wayne being a wealthy doctor were all written in the 60s and the following years to elaborate on the origins of his wealth.

    Similarly, in the 50s and earlier, Bruce was portrayed as a driven (but not insanely driven) wealthy guy who devoted all of his time to perfecting his physical and detective skills more or less in his own home. Later writers felt the need to have him travel the world acquiring these skills through the aid of various teachers, some of whom were less than admirable.
