I demonstrated considerable restraint filling out this month’s order. As usual, these are the items which caught my eye, but I ordered far fewer of them than is my wont.
JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND: I have never read even one Judge Dredd story in my life. Back in the ‘80s, when my comic book palette was rapidly expanding, I was aware of Judge Dredd and certainly always wanted to try some, but for whatever reason I never found a reprint edition that suited me. This might be the one, though: 248 pages, b&w, HC, IDW, $50.
MAD ARTIST EDITION: This features material from the first 18 issues of MAD including all of the covers. Price: “Please Inquire” – I don’t know if even I am that big of a MAD fan.
DALLEKS COWBOYS T-SHIRT: A Dalek in front of the Dallas Cowboys football team star.
HAWKEN: I gave pass to the mini-series by Tim Truman and his son Ben (because I missed the first issue), but the tpb is only $20.
OPUS: Five volumes of Bloom County and one of Outland. This one completes the set.
DICK TRACY Vol. 14 & LI’L ABNER Vol. 5 are both on my list.
CARL BARKS LIBRARY: This volume features the Donald Duck classics “A Christmas for Shacktown,” “The Golden Helmet” and “The Gilded Man.”
BARNABY: Barnes and Noble features prominent Barnaby signage leading into their children’s section, yet the first volume of the new five-volume set won’t be released until Nov 28. I doubt if any of today’s crop of young parents knows Barnaby from… I don’t know, Tin-Tin. (Of course, Tin-Tin had a recent movie.)
BASIL WOLVERTON’S SPACEHAWK: Crazy cool, second (arguably) only to Fletcher Hanks’ Stardust the super-Wizard in terms of sheer weirdness, Spacehawk is only one of three one of three Basil Wolverton books available (or available again) from Fantagraphics this month. The other two are The Culture Corner and The Wolverton Bible, both offered before. The Wolverton Bible (apparently only illustrations?) is a definite maybe, but Spacehawk is definitely going on my P&H list.
ALEX TOTH’S ZORRO and THE PHANTOM DAILIES Vol. 5 are two from Hermes Press that are definitely on my list.
AIRBOY AND THE AIRFIGHTERS: A mixture of new and vintage material. At $20, I can forego the pre-oder discount and make up my mind when I see it.

I was a huge fan of Judge Dredd in the 80s...bought the comics, the board game, the role-playing game, AND created stats for the character so I could play him during our Marvel Superheroes RPG sessions. He is completely a character that works for the Thatcher/Reagan era, but I'm not sure he ages well. I want to see the new film (as the 90s one was god-awful), but I have no desire to read Dredd in the 21st century.
I have this volume of Carl Barks on my Christmas list already. LOVE Shacktown.
Yep, I've pre-ordered Shacktown. The first two volumes of this reprint series are great.
I own the comics in the first reprints via Another Rainbow hardcovers and Gladstone books. I also own Shacktown in an old Gladstone softcover, but I would like this hardcover to keep and read at Christmas time year after year. I have a hardcover of Batman - Noel for the same reason.
I'm very excited about 47 Ronin by Mike Richardson and Stan Sakai. This is the mini-series, based on THE true, original ronin story, that has taken Sakai away from Usagi for a few months. It looks fantastic.
I've heard so many good things about Mind MGMT that I'm jumping on with the #0 issue.
I'm down to two DC titles - Wonder Woman and Superman Family Adventures. Man, flipping through those solicit pages, the nihilism wafting off of the covers made me so sad.
I'm loving Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom with the dream team of Waid and Samnee. I'm hoping for more from them...yes, Daredevil is amazing, but I want more...I'm an American!
Saga - the...greatest...comic...being...published.
I'm interested in a lot of the Marvel Now! books, but I'm only preordering ones that I'm worried about not doing well in this market. I really love the Fantastic Four/FF creative and character teams, so those I ordered. I'm a fan of Katherine Immonen and Mary Sue DeConnick, so Avengers Assemble and Journey Into Mystery are ordered. I already have comic shop subs for Hawkeye, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, and X-Treme X-Men.
My girls like comics, but they LOVE the Adventure Time, Simpsons, Archie, and SpongeBob books, so I have subs for them.
I enjoyed the first Stumptown mini a lot, so I'm in for this second one. It seems like they waited until the art was done this time, so (hopefully) it ships on time.
Holly's favorite comic, Courtney Crumrin, is a sub.
A few months ago...when the Batman chess pieces started, I scoffed...ha-ha, look at these fools paying $16 for one chess piece! In this Previews...the Lord of the Rings chess pieces started. I love my daughter. I will be spending $16 for one chess piece twice a month for as long as it takes. Fate...you are cruel. :)
...I seem to recall reading that Wolverton did illustrations for the Christian Bible ( which edition/translation ??? ) for many years for a Jehovah's Winesses?? magazine , I saw some , um , more " fantasy-situation "-oriented ones in GRAPHIC STORY MAGAZINE a long time ago , is this that ???
Bill, I think I would have been a Judge Dredd fan in the '80s... if only I would have tried it. I know what you mean, though, about something being a Thatcher/Reagan era thing. I recall that you don't care for Howard Chaykin's Amercan Flagg!, but that was one of my favorite comics of the '80s. It didn't age well, either. But I think I'll be able to put myself in that mindset if I choose to read it. This isn't one on the items I pre-ordered; I'll decide whether or not to buy it when I see it. And I've probably told you this before, but Tracy is a big Courtney Crumrin fan, too.
EKDJ: I really don't know anything about The Wolverton Bible. If it was something like R. Crumb's Genesis I'd snatch it up in an instant, but if it's just a series of illustrations, well... we'll see.
Oh! I always forget Marvel because it has its own "special" little catalogue, but...
IRON MAN by MICHELINIEM LAYTON & ROMITA, JR. OMNIBUS: I was just complaining a few weeks ago about the lack of a comprehensive collection of this material a few weeks ago! I have decided that I'm not necessarily fond of the "omnibus" format because I'm discovered it's heavy and awkward to read, but I'm tired of waiting for this run to be reprinted, so on my list it goes! It reprints issues #115-157 and has been solicited for February release.
I was disappointed by one item in this month's Previews. I was all set to get the Doctor Who Dictionary. Looked interesting & a nice price then BAM! Only available in U.S. & U.S. Territories (of which my home country of Canada is not). I'm just having a tough time wrapping my head around it. It's not as though Eccleston is mooning the reader at any point in the book or there is a picture of Sophie Aldred whipping 'em out. Maybe they explain Tom Baker's "Sprack Off" from Destiny of The Daleks? ;) Overall though not much of interest outside my usual reads with the exception of Green Lantern & that is just due to the Justice League appearance and The "Stay Calm & Don't Regenerate" T-shirt IF I can find out if it is adult sizes or kid's. I got hosed on that once before.
They don't, but they are probably very familiar with his Harold and the Purple Crayon, which is a classic children's story, with a hero who looks just like Barnaby: http://www.amazon.com/Harold-Purple-Crayon-Anniversary-Edition/dp/0...
I've got to think that's why the Barnaby signage leads into the children's section. Barnaby isn't really a comic strip for kids, because of its sophistication, but I suppose it might pass for one.
Only available in U.S. & U.S. Territories (of which my home country of Canada is not). I'm just having a tough time wrapping my head around it.
I imagine that's because, with a property like Doctor Who, some British publisher has the rights to the UK and Canada, and maybe Australia, etc., so the USA license doesn't let them sell it other places.
It's possible that before this one comes out, it'll be available in those places from someone else.

...I don't get Previews , but when I did , I very occasionally saw things listed as availabe in parts of America but not all of the U.S. !!!!!!!!!!! I think that it was some sort of weird Wolverine statue...
