ORIGIN OF THE INHUMANS: This tpb collects all of the early appearances (including partial appearances) of the Inhumans, a perfect “zero issue” companion volume to the two existing MMW volumes. (Too bad it’s not HC.)

EPIC COLLECTIONS: What’s with Marvel’s new “Epic Collections” line? They’re solicited volume 10 of Iron Man and promised vol. 20 of Spider-Man, vol. 16 of Thor, vol. 9 of Avengers. Is Marvel actually thinking ahead? This is the first I’ve heard of this series.

BATMAN UNWRAPPED: This HC collections of uninked Andy Kubert pencils looks interesting. Speaking of Kuberts…

TOR ARTIST’S EDITION: Joe Kubert gets the AE treatment again with his second volume. And speaking of AEs…

CONAN: RED NAILS: Genesis West is offering their version of an an IDW “Artist’s Edition” with BWS’s “Red Nails.”

THE SIDEKICK: This new series by J. Michael Straczynski and Tom Mandrake looks interesting. (Something along the lines of Brat Pack, I imagine?) Tom Mandrake is one of those artists I would follow to any project, and this one seems particularly suited to his style.

POGO: THE COMPLETE COMICS: Eclipse published four softcover volumes of this material some 20 years ago, but they only scratched the surface of Pogo comic book appearances published by Dell Comics. At 272 pages, this initial volume already surpasses Eclipse’s effort.

CLASSIC SPACE: 1999: Following closely on the heels of the recent “Aftershock and Awe” graphic novel, a new tpb collection repurposing the rest of Charlton’s old Space: 1999 material has been solicited for late August release. It will also include material detailing what happened between seasons of the TV show. (See page 241 for more details.)

THE ART OF ARCHIE: THE COVERS: There is so much Archie material available that I have to be very judicious in my choices so that I buy only the very best of the very best. This collection comes close, but I’ll probably pass because it’s more of an art book than a comic book.

PLANET OF THE APES: CATACLYSM: Issue #12 is described as the last of the series. I mention it only because I had at first assumed it was limited, then later decided it wasn’t after all. I’ve been with it this far; I’ll stick with it to the end.

THE COMPLETE GOLDEN AGE AIRBOY & VALKYRIE HC: I want this only if it’s in color.

BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY: A new ongoing from Howard Chaykin.

BUCK ROGERS COMIC STRIPS BY GRAY MORROW: Originally solicited for April 17, now re-solicited for August 28.

FIRST KINGDOM BY JACK KATZ: I have heard so much about this over the years but I have never read it. This is volume one in a series of six. Can anyone here recommend it?

Huzzah!  Personally, I sorta hope they reveal that one of those mysterious, semi-mystical alien races rejuvenated Victor, wiped his brain and gave him new, false memories as "Tony", and everyone on Moonbase Alpha decided to just roll with it.

I, conversely, only want it if it's in softcover.  (Well, I want it in HC but I ain't paying for it that way.)

  • It's $25 for 136 pages.

  • Hmmm ...

  • Jeff, I've always been fascinated by Jack Katz's First Kingdom. I believe Checker Comics solicited 4 volumes a few years ago compiling the entire series.

I bought the 1st volume and DID enjoy the story and Katz's line-y, but nice, art. It's a sprawling story that reminds me a lot of Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. I believe only 2 volumes were ever published but if they're taking another crack at it then I'm in and so should everyone else.

    Nuff said!

Ah, two series I'll actually be picking up as well. I run hot and cold on Chaykin's art, but the preview looked really good.

    My thoughts:

    1. On the order form X is listed as issue 4 of 4, but an ongoing in the catalog. I am pretty sure it is just a miniseries though.

    2. I'm surprised to see Clayface appear in Batman: The Dark Knight so soon after his turn in Batman. But BDK is rather removed from the rest of the Bat-line.

    3. Sad to see the last issue of Dial H. I always knew it was a long shot at best, but still I will mis it and the great Brian Bolland covers.

    4. Not sure why the Batman Beyond series is being rebooted.

    5. Figs, DC One Million omnibus just for you!

    6. Being a sucker for all things Fables, I'll be getting that encyclopedia

    7. I had just about given up on Secret from Image, but see that issue 3 is finally being resolicited over a year later.

    8. It drives me insane that they list Broadsword Comics before Boom!

    9. Always a pleasure to see an issue of Optic Nerve appear.

    Oh, you would say that!

Mark, I did pre-order First Kingdom, BTW...

  • The first volume of First Kingdom shipped last week. I’m about half way through reading it, and I can’t really make up my mind whether I like it or not. In fact, I don’t know quite what to make of it. I certainly know more about First Kingdom (and Jack Katz) than I did before (from reading the introductory material and even the afterword), but it’s more of a screed than it is a traditional story (at least that’s what I make of it so far).

NOTE to Mark: I see now what you mean by “line-y, but nice” art.
