Tips on using the board

I thought a thread of this kind might help out our new members. If anyone has a question, just ask away.

When you're writing a post, you can make the html tags in it visible by pressing the 'html' button (the rightmost one above the reply box). This is particularly helpful if you want to put a "reply" quote at the start of your post. When you press the "reply" button immediately below a post you want to respond to, the board brings up a box with the post's text in a blockquote (at the bottom of the box). If you bring up the html, you can place your own text after the quote by placing it after the /blockquote instruction.

I sometimes write my posts in Word and then transfer them across. This can result in unwanted formatting effects, so when I do this, I switch to html format and cut out the chaff I don't want.

    • ...and it looks like that's just exacerbated the problem, unfortunately. I now can't see even images like the logo, which apparently was being drawn from my cache.

This isn't happening with me and other websites -- I just looked over on Progressive Ruin, and there were a bunch of Fantastic Four images I hadn't seen yet. So I wonder why my computer has suddenly started fighting with Ning.

    • One weird thing, which I didn't mention before: For some reason, Eric Sofer's images are still visible to me. From what I can tell, no one else's are -- including the images in the site architecture (the logo, people's avatars, etc.) This is true on my laptop and also my phone, both on Chrome and Edge, but for no other site.. so it's got something to do with how I'm set up with Ning itself, for some reason. (I also deleted my ad blocker, which was becoming more of a nuisance than a useful tool anyway; that didn't help.)

    • Have you tried changing your DNS settings, at least temporarily?

Fair warning: this is a bit technical.  If you would rather not meddle with these matters, I suggest simply contacting the technical support of your ISP and telling them that you may be having trouble with recognition of images from the domain https://storage.ning.com/ and that there is suspicion that it may be an issue with the default DNS servers.

If you do want to meddle with choice of DNS servers, then read on:

It is conceivable that your internet access provider may provide default DNS servers which for some odd reason may be having translating the domains used for most images in these foruns to the necessary numeric IP addresses.

If that is the problem, you will probably want to contact your access provider soon enough, so that they may learn of the problem and take steps to correct them (perhaps by reconfiguring their DNS servers).  You may or may not want to switch back to their default DNS servers then.

This video explains how to do it.  While it aims to make internet use faster, the choice of DNS servers also influences which domains are recognized at any given time and how quickly (new or recently changed domains take about a couple of days to be properly acknowledged worlwide, and some DNS servers will react faster than others; there isn't necessarily a good way to predict which or when).

    • Luis knows more than I do about this. I've never even been aware of the DNS settings, let alone that there are multiple options.

The one thing that jumped out at me at the end of the YouTube presentation is that restarting your computer might be required to follow through on what you did.

    • Your browser should be loading what is on the Internet unless you are disconnected. It should be using the newest version of the page if your cache doesn't have it or has an older version.

    • Thanks, guys! I think it's definitely to do with the images hosted by Ning, and not other images. The ones I can see from Jeff & Eric are links to images hosted on mycomicshop.com and others.

And it looks like the problem IS with my internet provider! I turned off the wifi on my phone and logged onto the site, and there were the pictures!

    • And at the very least, I used my phone as a mobile hotspot, so I was able to re-cache the images (like the logo, avatars, etc) that make up the basic structure of this site!

    • Had no luck contacting my ISP... but two weeks later, whatever went wrong has been fixed.

    • There is a fair chance that the DNS settings (or whatever else may have been the issue) were corrected.

Some issues auto-correct with the passage of time, actually.

    • And one day later, the problems are back. Arrgh.
