Two Hulk Comics

HULK VS. IRON MAN #1: An unsuccessful attempt to shoehorn Tony Stark behind-the-scenes of Hulk #1. It’s an Original Sin spin-off mini-series which is set in the present but flashes back to the past. It’s co-plotted and scripted by Mark Waid and the art is by Mark Bagley. Apparently [SPOILER] Tony Stark sabotaged Bruce Banner’s G-bomb test. [SPOILER] Yes, you read that correctly. We can only hope this series will become a true Mopee. At least this time there are no Skrulls… yet, anyway.

SAVAGE HULK #1: Another continuity implant (but a much more successful one), this one occurring between X-Men #66 and X-Man: The Hidden Years #1 (the latter itself a continuity implant). The art and story are by fan-favorite Alan Davis. This story draws Hulk foes the Leader and the Abomination into the mix (which I’m almost certain is a clear violation of established continuity), but you know what? This comic book is so much fun I don’t even care. It combines my favorite version of the Hulk with my favorite version of the X-Men, features my two favorite Hulk villains and is written and drawn by one of my favorite creators. What’s not to like?

  • Apparently [SPOILER]...[SPOILER] Yes, you read that correctly. We can only hope this series will become a true Mopee.

Shouldn't the Hulk therefore be Stark's biggest fan?

  • I'm a big fan of Mark Waid, but I'm glad I decided against reading the Hulk/Iron Man book. I did pick up Savage Hulk, but haven't read it yet. I'll report back here when I'm done.

  • How the Hulk reacts remains to be seen. (I thought it was a one-shot when I bought it.) Not in continuity on Earth-J.

Looking forward to your thoughts on Savage Hulk. We were talking elsewhere about fun comics...? This one is plain fun.

  • I'm tradewaiting both books, but I hope this sabotage business doesn't become canon. Yuch.

And this is my favorite iteration of the X-Men too, Jeff! Do you think we'll be burned at the stake as heretics by Wolverine fans?

  • The second issues of these series have further cemented my opinion that they represent the opposite sides of the “right way” and “wrong way” to do a continuity implant. One of them is such a slap in the face to established continuity that I continue to read only with a sense of morbid fascination. As I mentioned last month (and have since confirmed), although, strictly speaking, the other violates established continuity as well, I just don’t care. YMMV.

  • Marvel seems to be doing their damndest to turn Tony Stark into a villain.

  • You mean turn him back into a villain. I swear they do this to create false drama in their books until they have to redeem him again in time for the next movie.

And now, apparently, Tony always was an alcoholic, literally going to the well one time too many.

  • And he beats his wife!

Oh, wait, that's a different founding Avenger.

  • Thank Odin they never gave Stark a wife!

    Or a teen sidekick!

  • No, but there was "Teen Tony" for a while.
