I keep reading this Hollywood Reporter story looking for some indication that Warner Bros. Discovery's proposed "Kevin Feige" Dan Lin likes comics, or has read comics, or understands DC's comics characters. In any way.

Naturally, I'm looking in vain. How stupid can the execs at WBD be? They keep looking for their own Kevin Feige without looking for people who are like Kevin Feige. Feige's primary attribute is that he knows, understands and loves Marvel's characters. Producers are a dime a dozen, but producers who know comics are not. I predict this Dan Lin guy is just gonna be another Zach Snyder/Walter Hamada on the Warner Bros. executive merry-go-round.

Of course, this is the company that produced Catwoman.

/Rant.

  • The worst part? Warner Bros. Discovery has its own "Kevin Feige," and they had him before "Kevin Feige" was a household name.

Who? Paul Dini. If I was in charge of Warner Bros. Discovery, I would offer him the gig and send a Brinks truck to his house every day until he said yes.

  • Does Dini have producer experience? Not that I think that matters -- I think it would be easier to teach someone how to be a producer than to teach someone who Superman is and why he's beloved. (See: Zach Snyder.) So yeah, Dini would be aweseome.

What happened to Geoff Johns? He was, like, co-in-charge for about a minute.

He does, but it's all in TV animation, per IMDb. That he doesn't have live-action or movie experience probably takes him out of the running, but to my mind, his knowing who Superman is and why he's beloved counts a whole lot more.

On the other hand, there's the example of Andrew Stanton, a big wheel at Pixar who directed A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo and WALL-E. With that track record, he got the keys to the kingdom to do his long-desired passion project: John Carterthe biggest flop of the year that year. To my mind, Stanton's failure wouldn't predict Paul Dini would fail, but for decades, Hollywood wouldn't produce a superhero movie with a female lead because Supergirl underperformed and Catwoman was a flop.

    This.

I loved John Carter. But I know that's not your point ...

And there it is. Sadly, ClarkKent Johnson is right.

  • Something is wrong with your News Flash link. Here's the story from People. He has one or two prosecutions in his future, but I don't think they're looking to arrest him. Whatever insurance company insured his movie probably wishes they could take it back.

  • CEO David Zaslav wants more "adult-oriented" TV fare. I'm willing to bet that Paul Dini's animation work would cause him to be passed over because Zaslav would see it as childish.

That Batman: Caped Crusader (a supposedly more adult animated Batman by Bruce Timm) has become a football would support that idea.

Also, thanks for pointing out the bad link. Fixed.

The more I read about what CEO David Zaslav is doing, the less I like it.

From The Daily Beast: "Laid-Off HBO Max Execs Reveal Warner Bros. Discovery Is Killing Off Diversity and Courting 'Middle America.'" The main thrust of the article is that the new leadership is making over HBO and HBO Max into the Discovery mold and jettisoning anything that doesn't fit.

    The Daily Beast wrote:

One former employee says as many as 13 people of color previously in charge of developing shows like The Gordita Chronicles and the Spanish-language docuseries Menudo: Forever Young have been let go, likely influencing the types of shows and movies that are greenlit moving forward. Among those laid off are Jen Kim, an Asian woman who served as the senior vice president of the international team, and Kaela Barnes, a Black woman who worked under Kim.

“I don’t think anyone knows just how white the staff is,” one former executive told The Daily Beast.

Former HBO Max staffers say there are barely any non-white people left in the upper ranks of content, with one naming Joey Chavez, an executive vice president of drama, as one of the few people of color still there. Because HBO Max and the original HBO channel operate somewhat independently, one former executive conceded that “there may be one Black woman on the HBO side. Maybe.”

    And:

One former exec describes Discovery+ as a “more general audience platform that doesn’t have the specificity that HBO Max was tailored to. I think Discovery is just a very ‘all’ audience, [they] don’t wanna make things that are political, topical, alienate Middle America—more Chip and Joanna,” they said, referring to the home renovation show Fixer Upper: Welcome Home hosted by Chip and Joanna Gaines.

“If David Zaslav had his wish, he would just program Chip and Joanna all day long,” the executive said. “There was just a massive, ‘We don’t need you. You’re not offering the things we’re focused on.’”
