Wow...just...wow

I'm not going to comment on this (yet). This is so mindbogglingly racist and STUPID that I'm not sure it needs comment. Yet. I will note this--listen to the last few seconds of the clip closely. Someone off camera started whistling "If I Only Had a Brain" from The Wizard of Oz.

  • That is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I've ever seen a grown man do. What a horrible person.
  • I read about this yesterday -- for some reason the video here wasn't working for me, so I went to Salon to see it there. (I added the link in case anyone else has the same problem.) I love the look on his cohost's face -- she's flabbergasted, but doesn't want to let the viewers know...
  • I'm stunned at the level of fear that is evidenced in this statement. I am equally stunned at how frequently these things are being said by people prominent in public life (Rep. Michelle Bachman, Rep. Peter King, Victoria Jackson, Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich), without regard to facts, history, truth, common decency -- any temporizing factor.
  • Seeing as how it's FOX, that's probably the least inflammatory and ignorant comment they made that day.
  • And not only that, Clark -- but they seem to receive no backlash or consequences for these statements whatsoever. A few firings and a few people being no longer welcomed as guests on these shows would go a long way, I think.
  • Except he has a brain, of sorts...

I thought it was interesting* that he cites the Italians and Irish as examples of those sullying the gene-pool.

He didn't pick those at random. Arguably they are the most recent social groups to go from being marginalised (and feared and despised) to being fully accepted unproblematic 'Americans'. Their secure status now allows him to mention them without being completely run out of town.

However they are also the groups that have been marginalised within living memory so everyone knows the type of people he's really referring to.

And the coding is also fascinating. He doesn't just mean 'Irish', but those of a poor Catholic background whose families generally arrived after the mainly presbytarian Scots-Irish, who played such a big role in the early years of the US.

God knows what he means by the word 'Americans'. Meso-Americans perhaps?

His whole argument is dumb, as its so hard to match cause and effect. You could also argue that if the US adopted a wide-scale state socialism like Sweden, then rates of early dementia would go down!

And I've just seen on google that this guy is a regular contributor on the show. Hoo boy! I thought he was just some dope they wheeled in for this discussion.

I'm always wondering what's in it for Rupert though? Its hard to get a straight answer to that one, apart from him being simply an evil old SOB...

    *and hilarious for me personally!
  • He used to be the sports guy on the show. They should've left him in that spot.
  • That explains everything!

As a card-carrying nerd, I'm prejudiced against all 'species' that are interested in sports.
  • Oh come on, Figs! We're not all that bad.

  • Well, as I've gotten older I've softened my hard line a bit.

To the point where some of my best friends are sports fans!

(But I saw my opening and the old habits kicked in!)
