I read many kiddie comics and comic strips from roughly age five to ten, but for some reason I shied away from the superheroes and SF comic books. At age ten I encountered the BATMAN tv show, which convinced me to try out superhero comics and give up the closest thing to it I used to buy, MIGHTY MOUSE.

Did you as fans have a smooth transition from little kid comics to older kid comics?

Or did you just buy everything you could find (assuming little kid comics were even available)?

  • Oddly enough, I think I started with superhero comics and added kiddie fare as an afterthought.  Probably the result of having a brother six years older.

  • Not so oddly, I started with superhero comics and added kiddie comics as my tastes broadened and my disposable income increased.

I was big on Marvel's Star Comics line in the '80s, which it launched after the demise of Harvey Comics, and employed some of its best talents -- Warren Kremer and Ernie Colon. My favorites were Top Dog -- basically a riff on Mr. Peabody and Sherman -- and Heathcliff, based on the newspaper comic strip.
