Short Cuts 94

Love Everlasting Volume 1; and Ice Cream Man Volume 11- Horror, Horror. Ice Cream Man is great as always, but Love Everlasting was a surprise, despite the all-star creative team (Tom King, writer; Elsa Charretier, artist; Matt Hollingsworth, colorist; Clayton Cowles, letterer). I was not expecting a surreal romance comic!

  • I have been very interested in Love Everlasting, and have mentioned it -- probably asked about it -- in the comics guide a few times. It sounds terrific, it's got Tom King writing it and the covers were intriguing (and often funny) genre mashups. But I wasn't sure I wanted it in a clumsy handful of trades, so I've been waiting for an omnibus or a DC Finest-type format. But that doesn't always happen, especially with lesser-known properties like this. I might be denying myself for no purpose. But it's good to know it IS good, so now it's a matter of when, not if, I pull the trigger. Maybe my LCS will have a sale.

  • At last, Mark: one of your "Short Cuts" I'm familiar with! (Love Everlasting, that is, not Ice Cream Man.) Love Everlasting is a series I am trade-waiting... almost accidentally because it had flown in under my radar until the tpb was released. After reading and enjoying it, I decided to collect the rest of the series that way. When v2 came out, I reread v1 to refresh it in my mind. Now v3 has been released, and I haven't yet decided to reread v1-2 or just v2. If you've rerad only v1, don't think you know what to expect from v2, because King takes the story to a new level; as for v3, I can't really say because I haven't read it yet, but I strongly suspect he will do so again.
