In previous years, this was a memory box so we didn't miss any good nominations for the Cappies. With the Cappies hypertimed away, that doesn't mean we have to discontinue these threads. I've always liked going back at the end of the year and seeing the books and stories and moments that people really champion -- including plenty of stuff that I've forgotten about come Christmastime.

So have at it, Legionnaires! It's a bold new year! What in 2017 has knocked you out?

First of all, this is so much more than a mere collection; it's more like a scapbook. Yes, there are many, many strips, divided by decade and annotated with captions explaining their significance or some behind-the-scenes fact, but the collection is also profusely illustrated with many, many photos and much memorabilia. (One thing that surprised me was a nude drawing, in color, of Miss Buxley.) The strips reprinted include both dailies and Sundays, both printed and original art. If you are a fan of comic strip art in general or of Beetle Bailey in particular, you owe it to yourself to get this book. I'm shelving mine next to Beetle Bailey - The First Years (1950-1952) and Milton Caniff's Male Call

The cover of my copy didn't look like this, though...? Guess I got an alternate cover or something. I don't really care (in this case), but I think I would have preferred the Jim Lee one.

    • I hae most of the HCs collecting the various miniseries, and I figure if I'm missing a few, I can continue to miss them. But boy, I'd sure like to have them all! Batman, like film noir, works really well in B&W.

    • But boy, I'd sure like to have them all!

I bought the first two mini-series. Then, in "protest" of an oversaturation of Batman, I dropped future ones, even though this was probably the B-title I was enjoying most at the time. (I sometimes make stupid decisions.) But this compendium! It's 1254 pages, 148 stories, and who knows how many creators... all in one volume!

And I take back what I said about the cover.

    • Nice! I may or may not pick this one up when I'm done with the first Triangle omnibus. My hope is the DC Finest collections will follow up the Time & Time Again volume with some more from this era, as as much as I'm enjoying the stories in this omnibus, I'm finding it cumbersome to just sit down and read.

    • I knew you'd be excited by this! I liked this period fine, but not enough to push something else off the bookshelf to make room for it. Just the same, I enjoy everyone's comments.
