A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

  • There are 14 characters on this cover, if you count all the bystanders... (plus it's issue #114).

  • I was so excited about the Justice League/Justice Society/All Star Squadron teamup of the summer of 1982!

Much as I loved Jerry Ordawy, it would have been great if Joe Kubert drew the interiors too!

Just by the headshot alone, I wanted to see a Kubert Aquaman story, a "Tarzan of the Deep"!

    • Hey, Kubert drew all-new heads for this cover!

    • George Perez did the same for the Justice League of America covers.

  • I suddenly realise how close we are to the end of the month, so here are several of the covers I still have unused.

Star Spangled Comics #55, April 1946.  Despite the "Simon & Kirby" signature, the cover is by Curt Swan and Steve Brodie.

Real Fact Comics #21, July-August 1949, the final issue of the series.  Cover by Curt Swan and John Fischetti.

Legion of Super-Heroes #8, June 1999.  The cover is an interesting mix of artists.  The left hand half is by Curt Swan, Murphy Anderson and Al Gordon, the right hand half by Keith Giffen and Al Gordon.

  • While I've yet to read the issue, I always thought the Curt Swan cover on the left was interesting. However the Grand Comics Database lists the inker as Neal Adams and not Murphy Anderson, who definitely embellished the one on the right.

    • I fully believe that the picture at the left was inked by Neal Adams.  His style is so visible as to almost overpower Curt Swan's pencils.

    • Even the layout looks more like Adams than Swan.

    • On the Superman #231 cover Superman's left leg looks wrong.

  •  OMG, the 27th of the month and I still have so many covers to post!  I'll have to leave you all with this one, as I can't be here tomorrow - travelling up North for a couple of days.

I'm sure you'll agree that this is a typical Curt Swan cover - well designed, well drawn and incredibly beautiful.  A fitting au revoir I hope you'll agree. See you all in March.
